Chapter 30: The Heart of the Stars, The Unspoken Bond

With Gray now engrossed in mastering his newfound living ice, I turned my attention to the third student. Lucy stood waiting in the white void of the Nexus, her expression a mixture of anxiety and determination. She had witnessed the intense power Natsu and Gray were now wielding, and while she was proud of them, a familiar seed of doubt had taken root in her heart. What could she, a summoner who relied on others to fight, possibly learn here?

I projected, my voice gentle to soothe her unease.

"I'm ready," she said, trying to sound more confident than she felt. "But... my magic is different. I don't fight with fire or ice. I rely on my spirits."

I replied.

A new portal opened. It did not radiate heat or cold. Instead, a soft, golden light spilled out, carrying the faint scent of night-blooming flowers and the sound of distant, gentle chimes. Through the doorway, Lucy saw a breathtaking sight: a vast, dark field under a sky littered with brilliant, multi-colored nebulae and constellations so close she felt she could touch them.

She took a deep breath and stepped through. The ground was soft, like moss, and the air was calm and warm.

I explained.

The first few months were grueling and deeply humbling. I had Lucy perform basic Aura enhancement exercises. She had to learn to find her Aura—a gentle, steady, golden glow, like a warm hearth—and circulate it through her body. Where Natsu had an inferno to tame, Lucy's was quiet and cooperative. The difficulty was in the application.

I created simple constructs of light for her to dodge. At first, she was clumsy, her Aura-enhanced movements jerky and uncoordinated. She tripped, she stumbled, and she was "tagged" by the slow-moving orbs more times than she could count. But she did not give up. Day after day, she practiced, her frustration slowly giving way to focus. She learned to move with her Aura, not against it. Her dodges became smoother, her steps lighter. She was never going to be a brawler like Natsu, but she was becoming a survivor.

The second part of her Aura training was stamina. I had her summon her spirits and keep them materialized while running laps around the celestial field.

"OPEN, GATE OF THE GIANT CRAB! CANCER!" "OPEN, GATE OF THE GOLDEN BULL! TAURUS!"

With two of her most powerful spirits active, the drain on her magic was immense. Initially, she could barely maintain them for ten minutes before collapsing, her magic depleted.

I explained as she panted on the ground.

It was a brutal regimen. She would run until her magic gave out and her spirits vanished. Then, she would get up and keep running, her legs screaming, her lungs burning, powered by nothing but her golden Aura and her sheer refusal to quit. Slowly, her limits began to expand. Ten minutes became thirty. Thirty became an hour. An hour became several. She was learning to endure.

The final test came months later. I created a dozen shadowy constructs, the same ones I had used with Loke before.

"This time, it's just me," she said, her voice steady. She held her whip, her body glowing faintly with her own power. She was not afraid.

She fought. She wasn't defeating them with brute force, but she was surviving. She dodged, she parried with her whip, she used the terrain. She was a dancer in a field of blades, always one step ahead. When one got too close, she didn't just strike with her whip; she pulsed her Aura through it, a golden flash that staggered the creature, giving her time to retreat and regroup.

After an hour of relentless combat, she was exhausted. Her magic was a flickering ember. Her body screamed with fatigue. But she was still standing. As the last construct faded, she dropped to one knee, breathing heavily, but a triumphant smile graced her lips. She had not defeated the army, but she had outlasted it. She was no longer fragile. She was resilient. The first part of her training was complete.
