Chapter 27: The Door to a Year
The west storeroom was thick with the smell of old paper and splintering wood. It was a forgotten corner of the guild, a place of endings, but today it would be a place of beginnings. The four of them filed in, their moods a stark contrast to one another. Natsu was practically vibrating, his fists clenching and unclenching as if he expected a fight to break out. Lucy wrung her hands, her eyes darting nervously into the dusty corners. Gray leaned against a stack of barrels, his arms crossed, his expression a mask of wary skepticism. Erza stood straight and tall, her gaze fixed on me with the unwavering focus of a soldier awaiting orders.
The door clicked shut, plunging the room into a dim quiet, broken only by a single beam of light from a high, grimy window.
"So, what's this all about, Mew?" Natsu finally burst out, unable to stand the silence. "You said we needed to talk. Is it about the fight? Are we goin' on another mission?"
I floated down to their eye level, my body beginning to emit a soft, internal light that pushed back the shadows.
"I knew it!" Natsu punched a fist into his palm. "That fire felt way hotter! It was awesome!"
"My Ice-Make," Gray added, his skepticism wavering slightly as he recalled the feeling. "It felt... more solid. Denser."
Gray's eyes widened. He remembered the impossible shield, the feeling of certain death averted. His skepticism was visibly crumbling.
"So... these powers... they're not magic?" Lucy asked, her voice barely a whisper.
The air crackled with a new tension. Natsu's excitement was now a burning intensity. Erza's focus sharpened. This was the heart of the matter.
"You can teach us?" Erza asked, her voice cutting through the quiet.
I affirmed.
The hopeful energy in the room faltered. "What do you mean?" Lucy asked, the familiar knot of dread tightening in her stomach.
My light softened, and the tone of my thoughts became somber.
A heavy, chilling silence filled the room. The weight of my words was absolute, a promise of future pain.
"Then we'll do it," Erza said, her voice like forged steel. There was no hesitation, no doubt. "Whatever it takes to protect the guild, we will do it."
"Just point me at 'em! I'll knock down anyone who tries to hurt our family!" Natsu roared, flames flickering around his fists.
I said gently.
I floated to the center of the room. The air began to hum, to vibrate with an impossible energy. My body glowed, first with a brilliant pink light that seemed to make space itself bend and warp. The walls of the storeroom shimmered, the dust motes freezing in place as if trapped in amber.
Then, a deep, resonant blue aura pulsed outwards, and the sound of a great, ancient clock began to tick, each tick an eternity that resonated in their very bones.
With a final surge of energy that made the very air crackle, a tear appeared in reality before them. It was not a hole, but a shimmering, vertical doorway. Through it, they could see nothing but an endless, featureless white expanse under a calm, neutral sky. The sight was so alien, so fundamentally impossible, that it defied all logic.
I explained, my voice the only thing that seemed to move in the frozen moment.
I let the statement hang, letting them absorb the impossible sight before them.
The four of them stared, utterly speechless. Natsu's jaw was on the floor, his bravado forgotten. Lucy looked like she might faint, her mind unable to reconcile the sight with the laws of the universe. Gray, his skepticism long since shattered, simply stared with wide, disbelieving eyes. Erza looked at the doorway with an expression of pure, unadulterated awe, understanding the strategic value of such a gift.
