Chapter 14 - Linger

Night settled gently over the Jeon estate, wrapping the towering walls in silver moonlight. The warmth of the morning felt distant now, replaced by the familiar hush that always came with darkness. Lanterns flickered softly along the corridors, their light barely touching the shadows that stretched long and watchful.

Jungkook stood near the outer wall, cloak pulled close around him. Yoongi approached quietly, footsteps practiced and soundless.

"You're leaving again," Yoongi said, not as a question.

Jungkook nodded. "Just for a while."

Yoongi studied him for a moment, eyes sharp but calm. "You know the timing. Don't linger too long."

"I won't," Jungkook promised. Then, after a pause, he smiled slightly. "You smiled today."

Yoongi exhaled, almost amused. "And you won't let me forget it."

"I don't want to," Jungkook replied honestly.

The corner of Yoongi's lips lifted again—small, restrained. "Then go. Before someone notices you hesitating."

Jungkook bowed lightly. "Thank you. As always."

With practiced ease, he scaled the wall, disappearing into the night just as he had done countless times before.

But this time—

From deeper within the shadows, a pair of eyes followed the scene.

A servant stood partially hidden behind a stone pillar, her expression tight with devotion. She had served the Jeon Elders for many years—long before Jungkook had returned. Loyalty was not a choice for her; it was a duty carved into her bones.

She had seen enough.

Yoongi assisting the young lord.

The timing.

The silence.

Her fingers curled into her sleeve.

"So it's true…" she murmured.

Without hesitation, she turned and vanished into the darkness, steps quick and purposeful. By morning, the elders would know.

Beyond the walls, laughter echoed softly beneath the trees.

Jungkook joined his friends, relief washing over him the moment he saw them. Jimin waved enthusiastically, Hoseok already mid-story, Seokjin pretending to scold Namjoon for something minor.

"You're late," Jimin teased.

"I had lessons," Jungkook replied, grinning. "And… something else."

"Oh?" Hoseok leaned in. "That smile means trouble."

Jungkook laughed. "Yoongi smiled at me today."

The group froze.

"…The Yoongi?" Seokjin asked slowly.

"Yes, the Yoongi," Jungkook confirmed proudly.

"No way," Namjoon said. "I thought his face was permanently serious."

"I did too!" Jungkook said. "But he smiled. Just for a second."

The group burst into laughter, teasing him relentlessly, but Jungkook didn't mind. He liked how light everything felt here—how easy it was to breathe.

Time passed without them noticing. Stories turned softer, voices quieter, until eventually the group naturally split into smaller conversations.

Jungkook found himself sitting beside Taehyung, the moonlight catching in his hair.

"You look happy," Taehyung said gently.

"I am," Jungkook replied. "Today felt… normal. Good."

Taehyung smiled, resting his hands behind him. "I'm glad. I like seeing you like this."

They sat in comfortable silence for a moment, listening to distant laughter.

"I like being with you," Jungkook said suddenly, heart racing as soon as the words left his mouth.

Taehyung turned to him, surprised—then softened. "Me too."

Their shoulders brushed, just slightly, but neither pulled away. No promises. No questions. Just warmth shared beneath the same moon.

For now, the night belonged to them.

Unseen, unheard, and unaware of the quiet betrayal unfolding elsewhere—

Jungkook laughed softly, holding onto the happiness while he could.
