Part I: The Consultation (Psychological Thriller)
Dr. Chen's lab was in a converted warehouse. Clean. White. Full of machines that beeped.
Mara sat on an exam table. Cass stood by the door.
"The treatment involves injecting modified neural stem cells directly into your hippocampus," Dr. Chen explained. "If it works, your brain will start repairing the damaged tissue. You'll stop losing memories. You might even regain some."
"And if it doesn't work?"
"You could lose everything. Including basic functions. Walking. Talking. Breathing."
Mara looked at Cass. "What do you think?"
He walked to her. Took her hand. "I think you've spent your whole life running from risk. Maybe it's time to run toward it."
"That's not an answer."
"It's the only one I have."
She turned to Dr. Chen. "When do we start?"

Part II: The Night Before (Literary Interlude)
That night, Mara couldn't sleep. She lay in bed, staring at the ceiling. The crack shaped like a question mark.
"Cass," she whispered.
He was awake. "Yeah?"
"If I die tomorrow, I want you to know something."
"Don't say that."
"Let me say it." She turned to face him. "I'm glad I forgot. Not the pain. Not the guilt. But the forgetting itself. Because every time I woke up not knowing you, I got to fall in love with you all over again. That's a gift. Most people only fall in love once."
He pulled her close. "You're not going to die."
"Promise?"
"I promise."
He couldn't promise that. But she believed him anyway.

Part III: The Procedure (Action Seed)
The next morning, Mara lay on a table. Needles in her arm. A cold gel on her scalp.
Dr. Chen stood over her. "Count backward from ten."
"Ten. Nine. Eight."
"Seven. Six. Five."
"Four. Three. Two."
"One."
Mara closed her eyes.
The world went white.
