Chapter 23 - Chapter 23 – The Foundation

Part I: Simone's Call (Psychological Thriller)

A year later. Mara was sixty. Simone called.

"I'm starting a foundation. For memory-loss victims. I want you on the board."

Mara was in the garden, pulling weeds. "I'm not a board person."

"You're a symbol. People need to see that someone survived."

"Survived? I'm still forgetting. Last week I couldn't remember Cass's middle name."

"His middle name is James. You've forgotten it forty times. He doesn't care."

Mara laughed. "Fine. What's the foundation called?"

"The Twelfth Wipe."

"That's my book title."

"I know. I asked your publisher."

Mara sat back on her heels. "You're serious."

"I've never been more serious. We're going to help people like you. People who were exploited by Aris and his network. There are dozens. Maybe hundreds."

"What do you need from me?"

"Come to the gala. Say a few words. Eat a donut."

"I hate galas."

"You hate everything. Come anyway."

Part II: The Speech (Literary Interlude)

The gala was in a hotel ballroom. Crystal chandeliers. Women in gowns. Men in tuxedos.

Mara wore a black dress and her red string.

She stood at the podium. Her hands were steady.

"My name is Mara Reyes. Or Kaelen. Or Juno. I've had twelve names and twelve lives. I remember none of them perfectly. But I remember this: memory is not who you are. Who you are is what you do when you forget."

She paused. The room was silent.

"I forgot my brother for forty years. He forgave me anyway. I forgot my husband a hundred times. He made me toast anyway. I forgot myself more times than I can count. But I kept waking up. And every morning, I chose to try."

She looked at Simone in the front row. Simone was crying.

"So here's what the foundation will do. We will find every victim of Dr. Aris. We will help them rebuild. Not their memories – their lives. Because you don't need to remember everything to be whole. You just need to be loved."

She stepped back. The room erupted.

Cass was in the back, clapping. He wasn't wearing a tuxedo. He was wearing his carpenter's jeans.

She walked to him. "You didn't dress up."

"You didn't ask me to."

"I love you."

"I know. You tell me every morning."

Part III: The Donation (Action Seed)

After the gala, a woman approached Mara. Young, nervous, holding a folder.

"Ms. Reyes? My name is Dr. Chen. I'm a neurologist. I've been studying Dr. Aris's research. I think I can reverse the cortical damage. Permanently."

Mara stared at her. "You're joking."

"I'm not. I have a prototype treatment. It's risky. But it could stop the forgetting. Forever."

"How many people have you tested?"

"None. You'd be the first."

Mara looked at Cass. His face was unreadable.

"Give me the folder," Mara said.
