Chapter 26 - Chapter 26 – The Grandchild

Part I: The Surprise (Psychological Thriller)

Mara was sixty-eight when Simone called with news.

"I'm going to be a grandmother."

Mara dropped the phone. Picked it up. "You had a child?"

"Adopted. Years ago. I never told you because I was afraid you'd forget her."

"What's her name?"

"Lena. She's twenty-five. She's a neuroscientist. She wants to meet you."

Mara sat down. The kitchen spun. "Why?"

"Because she's been studying Dr. Aris's work. She thinks she can finish what you started. A safe wipe. One that doesn't damage the brain."

"No. Absolutely not."

"Mara, listen to me. Lena is brilliant. She's not Aris. She wants to help people. People like you."

"People like me don't need help. They need toast."

Simone laughed. "You're impossible."

"I'm old."

"Same thing. Will you meet her?"

Mara looked at Cass. He shrugged.

"Fine. One meeting."

Part II: The Girl with the Red String (Literary Interlude)

Lena arrived on a Sunday. She had Simone's eyes and a stranger's smile. Around her wrist: a red string.

Mara stared at it. "Why are you wearing that?"

"Because of you. Aunt Mara. You're famous in our family. The woman who forgot everything and kept going."

"I'm not famous. I'm tired."

Lena sat across from her. "I'm not here to ask for your blessing. I'm here to ask for your memories."

"What memories?"

"The ones you stole from the vault. The ones you burned. I think you kept copies."

Mara's blood went cold. "I burned everything."

"You burned the paper. But you absorbed the memories. They're in your blood. Dr. Aris's notes said so. You are the vault now."

Cass stepped forward. "That's enough. You need to leave."

Lena didn't move. "I'm not here to hurt her. I'm here to offer her a choice. Let me extract the memories. One by one. We'll catalog them. Return them to the people they belong to."

Mara stood up. Her legs were weak. "And if I say no?"

"Then they die with you. And everyone those memories belong to will never know what they lost."

Part III: The Decision (Action Seed)

Mara walked to the window. The street was quiet. No black sedans. No men in gray jackets.

"Cass," she said. "What do I do?"

He came to her. Put his arm around her waist.

"You've been carrying other people's pain for forty years. Maybe it's time to put it down."

She turned to Lena. "How long would it take?"

"Years. Maybe a decade. But we can do it together. You and me. Aunt and niece."

Mara looked at the red string on Lena's wrist. Then at her own.

"One condition," Mara said. "You wear that string every day. And every time you extract a memory, you say the person's name out loud. So someone hears it."

Lena nodded. "Deal."

Mara held out her hand.

Lena shook it.

The red strings touched.
