CHAPTER 15: The Man Who Doesn't Lose
The silence inside the safe room was suffocating.
Every second stretched endlessly.
Every sound—imagined or real—made Elara's heart jump.
She sat on the floor with the twins in her arms, holding them close as they slowly drifted into an uneasy sleep.
Her fingers moved gently through the little girl's hair.
Over and over.
A silent promise.
I'm here.
Aiden stood near the door.
Still.
Alert.
Listening.
Always listening.
His entire presence had changed.
No warmth.
No softness.
Just control.
Danger.
Then—
A faint vibration.
His phone.
He answered immediately, his voice low.
"Report."
A pause.
Elara couldn't hear the other side.
But she watched his face.
Watched the shift.
"Status?"
Another pause.
His jaw tightened.
"How many?"
Silence.
Then—
"Alive?"
The word echoed in the room.
Elara's breath caught.
Aiden closed his eyes briefly.
Then opened them.
Cold.
Sharp.
"Bring him in."
He ended the call.
And turned to her.
"It's over."
Elara exhaled shakily.
Her body finally relaxing—just slightly.
"The twins?" he asked.
"Asleep," she whispered.
He nodded once.
"Good."
Minutes later, the door unlocked.
Aiden stepped out first.
Elara followed carefully, not wanting to wake the children.
The house…
Was a mess.
Broken glass.
Overturned furniture.
Signs of forced entry.
Violence.
Real.
Close.
Her stomach twisted.
"They were inside…" she whispered.
Aiden didn't deny it.
"Yes."
"Did you catch them?"
A pause.
Then—
"One."
Her heart skipped.
"One?"
Aiden's gaze darkened.
"And that's all we need."
They moved toward the main hall.
Two men in dark suits stood nearby—silent, watchful.
Between them—
A figure.
Kneeling.
Hands tied.
Head lowered.
Elara's breath caught.
This was real.
Too real.
"Look at me."
Aiden's voice was calm.
But deadly.
The man didn't move.
One of the guards forced his head up.
And Elara froze.
Because he wasn't what she expected.
He wasn't some faceless stranger.
He looked… normal.
Ordinary.
Like someone you'd pass on the street without a second glance.
"Who sent you?" Aiden asked.
No answer.
Aiden took a step closer.
The air shifted instantly.
"You broke into my house," he said quietly. "You threatened my family."
A pause.
"You don't get to stay silent."
Still—
Nothing.
Elara's chest tightened.
"Please," she said suddenly, stepping forward slightly. "Just tell us the truth."
The man's eyes flickered toward her.
For a second—
Something shifted.
Fear.
"Talk," Aiden said.
Low.
Controlled.
Final.
The man swallowed hard.
Then—
"I don't know names," he muttered.
Aiden didn't react.
"Who hired you?"
A pause.
Then—
"A woman."
Elara's heart dropped.
"What woman?" Aiden pressed.
The man hesitated.
Then—
"She… she had blonde hair."
The world went silent.
Elara felt it.
That sharp, sinking feeling in her chest.
Because there was only one person that could be.
Sophia.
Her hands clenched slowly.
Her heart didn't break this time.
It hardened.
"What did she tell you to do?" Aiden asked.
His voice hadn't changed.
But something in his eyes had.
The man swallowed again.
"To… scare her," he said.
Aiden didn't move.
"Just scare her?"
A long pause.
Then—
"If that didn't work…"
His voice dropped.
"…finish it."
Elara closed her eyes briefly.
Not in fear.
But in acceptance.
This wasn't a misunderstanding.
This wasn't an accident.
This was intentional.
When she opened her eyes again—
They were different.
Colder.
Stronger.
"Did she say anything else?" she asked.
The man hesitated.
Then nodded slightly.
"She said…"
A pause.
"…if you remembered where you hid it…"
His eyes lifted to meet hers.
"…you wouldn't live long enough to use it."
Silence crashed into the room.
The proof.
Everything came back to that.
Aiden's expression darkened.
"Take him," he said coldly.
The guards moved instantly, dragging the man away.
The room fell quiet again.
But the silence now—
Was heavier.
More dangerous.
Elara stood there, her thoughts racing.
Her heart steady.
Her fear—
Gone.
"She tried to kill me," she said.
Not a question.
A statement.
Aiden stepped closer.
"Yes."
Elara nodded slowly.
Then looked up at him.
And for the first time—
There was no hesitation.
No doubt.
No confusion.
"Then we end this."
Aiden held her gaze.
Something dark flickered in his eyes.
Approval.
"Together," he said.
Outside, the night slowly settled.
But the storm—
Was far from over.
