CHAPTER 14: The Night They Came Back
The air felt wrong.
Elara couldn't explain it.
But as she stood by the window that evening, watching the sky darken, a strange unease settled deep in her chest.
Like something was coming.
Something she couldn't see—
but could feel.
"Are you alright?"
Aiden's voice came from behind her.
She turned slightly, forcing a small smile.
"I think so."
He didn't look convinced.
His gaze lingered on her a moment longer before shifting toward the window.
His expression hardened almost instantly.
"What is it?" she asked, her heart beginning to race.
Aiden didn't answer.
He stepped closer to the window, his eyes scanning the driveway, the gates, the shadows beyond.
Then—
"Stay inside," he said sharply.
The sudden change in his tone made her chest tighten.
"Aiden—"
"Now."
There was no room for argument.
Before she could respond, he was already moving.
Pulling out his phone.
Calling someone.
"Lock everything down," he said, his voice cold, controlled. "No one gets in or out."
A pause.
Then—
"They've made their move."
Elara's pulse spiked.
They.
Daniel.
Sophia.
"What's happening?" she whispered.
Aiden ended the call and turned to her.
His expression was serious now.
No softness.
No hesitation.
"Go to the kids."
Her breath caught.
"Why?"
"Because I need to know you're all in one place."
That was enough.
Elara didn't argue.
Didn't question.
She turned and ran.
"Mama!"
The twins looked up from the living room as she rushed in.
Their eyes lit up instantly.
But the moment they saw her face—
their smiles faded.
"Something's wrong," the little boy said quietly.
Elara forced herself to stay calm as she knelt in front of them.
"No," she said gently. "Everything's fine."
A lie.
But one she had to tell.
"Come here," she added softly, pulling them close.
They didn't resist.
Didn't question.
They just held onto her—
trusting her completely.
And that trust?
It made her chest ache.
A loud sound echoed outside.
Metal.
Clashing.
Breaking.
The twins flinched.
Elara's heart jumped.
"What was that?" the little girl whispered.
Elara tightened her hold on them.
"It's nothing," she said, even though her voice trembled slightly.
But deep down—
She knew.
It wasn't nothing.
Footsteps approached quickly.
Then—
Aiden appeared.
His expression was darker than she had ever seen it.
"It's worse than I thought," he said.
Her breath caught.
"How bad?"
"They're not here to scare us."
A pause.
"They're here to finish it."
The words sent a chill through her entire body.
"Security?" she asked quickly.
"Handling it," he replied. "But they came prepared."
Of course they did.
This wasn't random.
This was planned.
Another loud crash echoed through the house.
Closer this time.
The twins clung tighter to her.
"Mama…" the little girl whimpered.
Elara's heart broke.
"It's okay," she whispered, holding them close. "I'm here."
Even if she didn't know what to do—
She wouldn't let them feel it.
Aiden stepped closer.
"We need to move."
Elara looked up at him.
"Where?"
"Safe room."
Her heart skipped.
"There's a safe room?"
"Yes."
Of course there was.
This was his world.
Power.
Control.
Preparation.
"Come on," he said, his voice softer now as he looked at the children. "Stay close."
They moved quickly.
Through a hallway.
Down a narrow staircase.
The tension thickened with every step.
Another crash echoed.
Louder.
Closer.
Too close.
Elara's breathing quickened.
Her grip on the twins tightened.
"Don't be scared," she whispered, even as fear crept into her own voice.
They reached a door.
Hidden.
Reinforced.
Aiden opened it quickly.
"Inside."
Elara ushered the twins in first.
They clung to her tightly, their small bodies trembling.
She followed.
Aiden stepped in last—
And locked the door behind them.
Silence.
Heavy.
Pressing.
The room was dimly lit.
Secure.
Soundproof.
Safe.
But Elara's heart was still racing.
"What if they get in?" she whispered.
Aiden shook his head.
"They won't."
But something in his eyes—
Said he wasn't taking chances.
The little girl buried her face in Elara's chest.
"Mama… I'm scared."
Elara closed her eyes briefly, holding her tighter.
"I know," she whispered. "But I've got you. I won't let anything happen."
And for the first time—
She meant it.
The little boy looked up at Aiden.
"Daddy… are the bad people back?"
Aiden crouched in front of him.
"Yes," he said honestly.
Elara's breath caught slightly.
But he continued—
"But they're not stronger than us."
The boy nodded slowly.
Trusting him completely.
Elara watched them.
And something shifted inside her again.
Not fear.
Not confusion.
But something stronger.
Protectiveness.
She looked at Aiden.
Their eyes met.
And in that moment—
They understood each other without words.
This wasn't just about truth anymore.
Or revenge.
This was about family.
And neither of them was willing to lose it.
Outside—
The chaos continued.
Loud.
Violent.
Relentless.
But inside that room—
A different kind of strength was forming.
Because this time—
Elara wasn't running.
She was standing her ground.
