CHAPTER 18: The Shot That Changed Everything

The room fell into a deadly stillness.

Sophia's finger hovered on the trigger.

Aiden's body was tense—ready to move.

Elara stood in the center of it all…

Holding the one thing everyone wanted.

"Last chance," Sophia said quietly.

Her voice trembled—but not from fear.

From pressure.

From desperation.

Elara didn't move.

Didn't blink.

Didn't back down.

"No."

The word echoed like a gunshot.

And then—

Everything happened at once.

Sophia pulled the trigger.

BANG.

Aiden moved faster than Elara could process.

His arm wrapped around her—

Pulling her down—

Shielding her—

The force knocked them both to the ground.

Elara's ears rang.

Her heart slammed violently in her chest.

For a moment—

She couldn't feel anything.

Couldn't think.

Couldn't breathe.

Then—

"Aiden…?"

Her voice came out weak.

Shaking.

No answer.

Her heart dropped.

"Aiden!"

He groaned slightly above her.

His body tense.

Heavy.

"I'm fine," he muttered.

But his voice—

It wasn't steady.

Elara's hands trembled as she looked at him.

Her breath caught.

Blood.

It spread slowly across his shoulder.

Dark.

Sharp.

Real.

"No…" she whispered, panic rising.

"You're bleeding—"

"I said I'm fine," he repeated, more firmly this time.

But his grip on her hadn't loosened.

Not even for a second.

Another sound broke through the chaos.

"Damn it!"

Sophia.

Elara's head snapped up.

Sophia stood frozen—her hand still gripping the gun.

Her expression—

Shocked.

She hadn't expected that.

"You… you weren't supposed to—" Sophia's voice faltered.

Aiden pushed himself up slowly.

Ignoring the pain.

Ignoring the blood.

His eyes locked onto her.

And Elara had never seen anything like it before.

Pure.

Controlled.

Rage.

"You're done."

His voice was quiet.

But final.

Sophia took a step back.

For the first time—

Fear flickered across her face.

"You think this ends here?" she snapped, trying to regain control. "You have no idea what you're dealing with!"

Aiden didn't respond.

Didn't argue.

Because he didn't need to.

Footsteps suddenly echoed from outside.

Fast.

Coordinated.

Sophia's eyes widened.

"No…"

The door burst open.

Security.

Armed.

Precise.

Controlled.

Within seconds—

They surrounded her.

"Drop the weapon!"

Sophia's hand trembled.

Her eyes darted around.

Calculating.

Searching for a way out.

There wasn't one.

Slowly—

The gun slipped from her fingers.

It hit the floor with a dull sound.

Silence followed.

Heavy.

Final.

"It's over," Elara said softly.

Sophia laughed.

But it sounded broken.

Unstable.

"You really think so?" she said.

Her eyes lifted slowly to meet Elara's.

"You're still missing the biggest piece."

Elara's chest tightened.

"What do you mean?"

Sophia smiled.

And this time—

It wasn't anger.

It wasn't jealousy.

It was something darker.

"Daniel isn't the one in charge."

The words hit like another gunshot.

Elara froze.

Her mind raced.

"What…?"

Sophia's smile widened slightly.

"You were so close to finding out," she said. "Before everything went wrong."

A cold chill ran down Elara's spine.

"Then who is?" she asked.

Sophia didn't answer right away.

Instead—

She leaned slightly closer.

Her voice dropping to a whisper.

"Ask your husband."

The world stopped.

Elara's breath caught.

Her heart skipped.

Slowly—

She turned.

And looked at Aiden.

His expression—

Had changed.

Not shocked.

Not confused.

But something else.

Something she couldn't read.

And that—

That scared her more than anything.
