CHAPTER 10: The Truth Hidden in the Shadows
The house felt different after they left.
Quieter.
But not peaceful.
The silence now carried weight—like something had been set in motion, something that couldn't be undone.
Elara stood near the doorway long after Sophia and Daniel were gone.
Her chest still felt tight.
Not from regret.
But from realization.
That part of her life—
Was truly over.
"You did well."
Aiden's voice came from behind her.
Low.
Steady.
Elara turned slightly.
"I don't feel like I did," she admitted.
Her voice was soft, distant.
Aiden stepped closer—but not too close.
"You chose yourself," he said. "That's never easy."
Her eyes flickered to his.
"And what if I chose wrong?"
The question lingered between them.
Heavy.
Honest.
Aiden didn't answer immediately.
But when he did—
"You didn't."
No hesitation.
No doubt.
And somehow—
That steadied her.
A moment passed before Elara spoke again.
"The accident," she said quietly.
Aiden's expression shifted instantly.
Darker.
More focused.
"What about it?"
She swallowed.
"You said it wasn't just an accident."
He held her gaze.
"I said it wasn't that simple."
Her heart began to race.
"What are you not telling me?"
A long pause followed.
Then—
"I've been investigating it."
Her breath caught.
"Investigating…?"
He nodded once.
"From the moment it happened."
A chill ran down her spine.
"Why?"
The question slipped out before she could stop it.
His eyes softened—just slightly.
"Because you almost died."
The simplicity of his answer made her chest tighten.
Aiden turned slightly, walking toward the table.
He picked up a file.
Thick.
Heavy.
And placed it in her hands.
Elara hesitated before opening it.
Her fingers trembled slightly as she flipped through the pages.
Photos.
Reports.
Details.
More than she expected.
"You did all this… for me?" she asked softly.
"I did what needed to be done," he replied.
Her eyes scanned the documents.
Then stopped.
"There's no driver information?" she frowned.
"The car that hit me… there's nothing?"
Aiden's jaw tightened.
"That's the problem."
Her heart skipped.
"The vehicle was found," he continued. "But it was wiped clean. No fingerprints. No registered owner."
Elara's pulse quickened.
"That's not normal…"
"No," he agreed. "It's not."
A heavy silence filled the room.
"This wasn't random, was it?" she whispered.
Aiden didn't answer.
But he didn't need to.
"There's more," he said after a moment.
Elara looked up.
"What?"
His gaze darkened slightly.
"There was a witness."
Her breath caught.
"A witness?"
He nodded.
"Someone saw what happened that night."
Hope flickered in her chest.
"Then why don't we know who did it?"
Aiden's expression hardened.
"Because the witness disappeared."
The words hit like a blow.
"Disappeared…?"
"Gone," he said. "No trace. No contact. No records after that night."
Elara's stomach twisted.
"That's not a coincidence."
"No," Aiden said quietly. "It's not."
A cold realization settled in her chest.
"Someone didn't want the truth to come out."
Aiden's eyes held hers.
"Exactly."
Elara closed the file slowly.
Her mind raced.
Her heart pounded.
Everything felt bigger now.
Darker.
More dangerous.
"Do you think…" she hesitated, her voice dropping. "Do you think it has something to do with them?"
Aiden didn't ask who.
He already knew.
Daniel.
Sophia.
Her past.
"It's possible," he said carefully.
Not denial.
Not confirmation.
But enough.
Elara's fingers tightened around the file.
"Then we need to find out the truth."
Aiden studied her for a long second.
"You're sure?"
She nodded.
This time—
There was no hesitation.
"They lied to me," she said quietly. "They betrayed me."
Her eyes hardened slightly.
"And someone tried to take my life."
A silence followed.
But it wasn't empty.
It was filled with something new.
Something stronger.
Resolve.
"I want to know everything," she said.
Aiden's gaze softened.
Then—
"Alright."
He reached for his phone.
"There's someone you should meet."
Elara frowned slightly.
"Who?"
Aiden looked at her.
And for the first time—
Something dangerous flickered in his eyes.
"Someone who knows more than they should."
Later that evening, the car pulled into a quiet, secluded area on the edge of the city.
Elara looked around, uneasy.
"Where are we?"
"A safe place," Aiden replied.
The word didn't comfort her.
Not completely.
They stepped out of the car.
Aiden led the way toward a small, dimly lit building.
Everything about it felt hidden.
Secretive.
Intentional.
Inside, the air was tense.
Still.
Like it was holding its breath.
A figure sat in the corner.
Partially hidden in the shadows.
Elara's heart began to race.
"Who is that?" she whispered.
Aiden didn't answer immediately.
He stepped forward slightly.
The figure shifted.
Then—
Spoke.
"You shouldn't have brought her here."
The voice was rough.
Low.
Familiar.
Too familiar.
Elara froze.
Because something about it—
Pulled at her memory.
Aiden's voice was calm.
"She deserves to know."
A pause.
Then—
The figure leaned forward.
And stepped into the light.
Elara's breath caught.
Her eyes widened in shock.
Because standing in front of her—
Was someone she never expected to see again.
