Chapter 9 - We Meet Again

Time has a strange way of moving.

Sometimes, days feel like years.

And sometimes, months pass like a blur.

For Harsh and Indu, the months after their breakup felt heavy… but also fast.

They didn't talk.

They didn't sit together.

They didn't walk the same paths anymore.

But no matter how much distance they created—

They could never truly stay away.

It was the last few weeks before final exams.

The school had become quieter. Everyone was busy preparing, revising, stressing about marks and future plans.

Harsh had changed.

He studied regularly now.

He spoke less than before.

He avoided unnecessary conversations.

From the outside, he looked focused.

But inside—

He still carried Indu in every thought.

That evening, Harsh went to the library to study.

It was almost empty.

He picked a corner seat, opened his book, and tried to focus.

But after a few minutes, he felt something familiar.

A presence.

He looked up.

And there she was.

Indu.

Standing a few steps away, holding her books.

For a moment—

Neither of them moved.

Neither of them spoke.

It felt like time had gone backwards.

Indu slowly walked toward the table.

"Is this seat taken?" she asked softly.

Harsh looked at the empty chair in front of him.

"No," he said.

She sat down.

Just like old times.

For a few minutes, they both tried to study.

But it was impossible.

Too many memories.

Too many unsaid words.

Too many emotions.

Finally, Indu spoke.

"You still come here every evening?" she asked.

"Yeah," Harsh replied. "Helps me focus."

Indu nodded. "Same."

A small silence again.

But this time, it wasn't painful.

It was… familiar.

After a few minutes, Harsh said quietly,

"You've been doing well."

Indu looked at him. "So have you."

Harsh smiled slightly. "Trying."

Indu closed her book.

"Harsh… can I ask you something?" she said.

He nodded.

"Are you happy?" she asked.

That question hit deeper than anything else.

Harsh didn't answer immediately.

Then he said honestly,

"No."

Indu's eyes softened.

"Me neither," she said.

That moment broke something.

Or maybe—

It fixed something.

Harsh looked at her and said,

"I thought staying away from you would make things better… for you."

Indu shook her head slowly.

"It didn't."

"I thought you would move on," he said.

"I tried," she replied. "But I couldn't."

Harsh felt his heartbeat getting faster.

"I still…" he stopped.

Indu looked at him, waiting.

"I still love you," he finished.

Indu's eyes filled with tears instantly.

"I never stopped," she whispered.

Silence again.

But this time—

It was full of emotions.

Harsh looked down. "I'm sorry."

Indu shook her head. "I was angry at you… but I never hated you."

"I hurt you," Harsh said.

"You did," she replied. "But I understand why you did it."

Harsh looked at her, surprised. "You do?"

Indu nodded.

"You love me… in your own way. Even if that way hurts sometimes."

Harsh couldn't hold it anymore.

He stood up suddenly and walked a few steps away, trying to control his emotions.

Indu followed him.

"Harsh…" she called softly.

He turned around.

And before he could say anything—

Indu hugged him.

Tightly.

As if she was afraid he would disappear again.

Harsh froze for a second.

Then slowly…

He hugged her back.

"I missed you," Indu whispered.

"I missed you too," Harsh replied, his voice breaking.

They stayed like that for a few seconds.

Not caring about anything.

Not caring about anyone.

Just holding each other…

Like they had found something they had lost.

After a while, they pulled back slightly.

Indu looked at him and said,

"Don't leave me again."

Harsh shook his head.

"I won't… not this time."

"Promise?" she asked.

"Promise," he said.

They went back to their seats.

But now—

They weren't strangers anymore.

As they studied together again, Harsh smiled a little and said,

"Looks like we're back to 'something more than friends.'"

Indu smiled too.

"No," she said.

Harsh looked at her. "No?"

Indu leaned slightly closer and said softly,

"This time… let's not run away from it."

Harsh understood.

And this time—

He didn't let fear win.

They didn't know it yet…

But this was just the first of many times they would break and come back together.

Because their love was strong.

But life…

Was stronger.
