Chapter 10 - Us Against the World

The day Harsh and Indu found their way back to each other in the library, something changed—not just between them, but inside them.

The first time they fell in love, it was innocent.

The second time, it was a choice.

And choosing someone again, after they hurt you and after you hurt them, is a different kind of love. A deeper one. A more dangerous one. Because now you know how much the other person can hurt you… and you still choose them.

That evening, after the library, Harsh and Indu walked out together. The sky above Darjeeling was covered in soft grey clouds, and the air smelled like rain again.

It reminded them of the first day they truly talked.

The day of the umbrella.

The day everything started.

They walked slowly, not saying much, just enjoying the fact that they were walking together again.

"Where are you going after exams?" Indu asked.

"Home," Harsh replied. "I haven't seen my grandparents in months. My grandfather keeps calling me and asking when I'm coming back."

Indu smiled. "You really love your grandparents a lot, don't you?"

Harsh smiled too. "They raised me when my parents were busy working. My grandfather is my hero."

"Hero?" she asked.

"Yeah," Harsh said. "He's not rich, not famous, not highly educated. But he's the strongest man I know. He worked his whole life for his family and never complained. I want to become a man like him."

Indu looked at Harsh quietly.

She realized something in that moment.

Harsh didn't want to become rich to show off.

He didn't want success to prove something to the world.

He just wanted to become someone his family could be proud of.

And that's why she loved him.

Days passed, and they were together again—but this time, they were more careful.

They studied more seriously.

They talked less during class.

They tried to balance love and studies.

But love doesn't like balance.

Love wants time.

Love wants attention.

Love wants presence.

And slowly, they again started spending more and more time together.

One evening, they went to the same hill where Harsh used to sit alone after their breakup. The sunset painted the sky orange and purple, and the wind was cold.

"This place again," Indu said.

"I used to come here alone after we broke up," Harsh admitted.

Indu looked at him. "What did you do here?"

"I used to talk to you," he said.

She frowned a little. "But I wasn't here."

"I know," he said. "But I still talked. I told you about my day, my marks, my grandfather's health, everything. Like you were sitting next to me."

Indu's eyes filled with tears again. "You're really an idiot."

Harsh smiled. "I know."

She sat down on the grass, and he sat beside her.

"Harsh," she said softly, "promise me something."

"What?"

"No more leaving me alone and deciding what's good for me. If there is a problem, we will face it together. Not alone. Together."

Harsh nodded slowly. "Together."

She extended her hand.

"Partners?" she said.

Harsh held her hand.

"Partners," he replied.

But the world doesn't like it when two people are too happy.

Problems started again.

Not from inside this time—

But from outside.

One day, Indu's class teacher called her after school.

"You are one of the best students in this school," the teacher said. "You have a very bright future. I heard about you and Harsh. Is it true?"

Indu stayed calm. "Yes, ma'am."

The teacher sighed. "I'm not saying he's a bad boy. But you need to understand something. At this age, relationships can distract you. You have the potential to go to a very good college, maybe even outside India. Don't ruin your future because of emotions."

Indu listened quietly.

"I'm not telling you to stop talking to him," the teacher continued. "I'm just telling you to focus on your career first. Love can wait. Career cannot."

Indu nodded politely. "I understand, ma'am."

But inside, she was confused.

Why does everyone think love and career cannot go together? she thought.

At the same time, Harsh was facing pressure from his family.

One night, his father called him.

"Harsh, you need to focus on studies now," his father said. "We are not very rich. We are sending you there with a lot of difficulty. If you don't study properly, we cannot afford all this."

"I know, Papa," Harsh said quietly.

"We trust you," his father continued. "Don't waste this chance."

Harsh looked at the photo of him and Indu on his desk after the call ended.

"I'm trying to build a future… but I don't want a future without you," he whispered.

Pressure from teachers.

Pressure from family.

Pressure from society.

Pressure from their own fears.

Their love was slowly becoming a fight.

Not against each other.

But against the world.

One evening, Indu asked, "Harsh, what if my family doesn't accept you in the future?"

Harsh stayed quiet for a moment. Then he said,

"Then I'll work so hard that they will have no reason to reject me."

"And if they still say no?" she asked.

Harsh looked at her and said something very simple, but very powerful:

"Then I'll spend my whole life trying to prove that I can keep you happy."

Indu felt tears in her eyes again.

"Why do you love me so much?" she asked.

Harsh smiled. "I don't know. I just know that when I imagine my future… you're always there."

Indu leaned her head on his shoulder.

"And when I imagine my future," she said softly, "I see a small house, two horses, some cows, and you."

Harsh laughed softly. "You remember that?"

"I remember everything," she said.

That night, while walking back, Harsh suddenly stopped.

"Indu," he said.

"Hm?"

"I don't know what will happen in the future. I don't know if we will be successful, if our families will agree, if life will be easy or hard. I don't know anything."

Indu looked at him quietly.

"But I know one thing," Harsh continued. "No matter what happens, loving you will always be the best thing that ever happened to me."

Indu couldn't stop her tears this time.

She stepped forward and hugged him tightly.

"Then don't stop loving me," she whispered.

"Never," he replied.

They didn't know that life was listening to their promises.

And life was preparing to test every single one of them.

Because their story was not a simple love story.

It was a story of:

Love

Distance

Breakups

Patch-ups

Dreams

Family

Sacrifice

And one day…

A goodbye they never expected.
