Chapter 20 - Chapter 21: Unfamiliar

The silence wasn't the same anymore.

That was the first thing Tessa noticed.

As she walked through the school gates, adjusting her bag slightly on her shoulder, everything felt… normal.

Too normal.

No loud whispers.

No obvious stares.

Just the usual movement of students heading to class.

And yet.

Something was different.

Not around her.

Inside her.

She exhaled softly, brushing the thought aside as she walked into the hallway.

Lily caught up with her almost immediately.

"Okay, I don't trust this," she said.

Tessa glanced at her.

"Trust what?"

"This," Lily gestured vaguely around them.

"It's too quiet."

Tessa almost smiled.

Almost.

"Maybe people got bored."

Lily gave her a look.

"They don't get bored. They upgrade."

That… wasn't reassuring.

Tessa didn't respond.

Because part of her knew Lily wasn't wrong.

But for now.

She'd take the quiet.

The first time she saw him that morning.

It wasn't dramatic.

No sudden moment.

No interruption.

Just.

A glance.

Across the hallway.

Adrian stood with his friends, one hand in his pocket, looking like he always did.

Unbothered.

In control.

But when his eyes met hers.

Something shifted.

Just slightly.

Neither of them looked away immediately.

Not like before.

Not like when it was easier to pretend.

Then.

Tessa looked away first.

Of course she did.

But this time.

It wasn't because she had to.

It was because she chose to.

And somehow.

That felt different.

By the time their shared class came around—

The air felt heavier again.

Not tense.

Just… aware.

Tessa sat down, pulling out her notebook as usual.

A few seconds later.

The chair beside her moved.

She didn't look up immediately.

Didn't need to.

Adrian.

"Morning."

The word caught her off guard.

Not because of what it was.

But because of how it sounded.

Normal.

Like nothing had happened.

Like everything had.

She hesitated.

Then.

"…Morning."

Quiet.

But not cold.

Progress.

They didn't say anything else after that.

But the silence between them.

Wasn't empty.

After class.

"Library?" Adrian asked.

Simple.

Direct.

Tessa adjusted her books slightly.

"…Yeah."

No hesitation this time.

And that.

Didn't go unnoticed.

The library felt the same.

But also.

Not.

Tessa walked in beside him this time.

Not ahead.

Not behind.

Beside.

They reached the table together.

Sat down.

Closer than before.

Not intentional.

But neither of them moved away.

Tessa pulled out her notes.

Adrian placed something on the table.

Neatly organized papers.

Printed.

Highlighted.

She paused.

Looked at them.

Then at him.

"You did all this?"

A small shrug.

"It needed to be done."

Simple.

Like it wasn't a big deal.

But it was.

Because this wasn't the Adrian she met before.

The one who didn't care.

The one who treated everything like a game.

"…Thanks," she said.

Quieter this time.

Real.

He didn't respond.

But something in his expression softened slightly.

They started working.

And this time.

It flowed.

Not forced.

Not careful.

Just… natural.

"You over-explain this part," Adrian said, pointing at her notes.

Tessa frowned.

"I like details."

"You're repeating yourself."

"I'm reinforcing the point."

"That's not reinforcing, that's overkill."

She looked up at him.

"…You're annoying."

The words came out before she could stop them.

There was a pause.

Then.

Adrian almost smiled.

Almost.

"You didn't have to say that out loud."

Tessa blinked.

And for a split second.

She almost laughed.

Almost.

But she caught herself.

Looked back down quickly.

"…Focus," she said.

But it was too late.

He noticed.

Of course he did.

And something about that moment.

Stayed.

Time passed faster than usual.

Neither of them mentioned it.

Neither of them wanted to.

Because stopping meant.

Breaking whatever this was.

And neither of them seemed ready for that.

At some point.

Their shoulders brushed.

This time.

Neither of them move away.

Not immediately.

Just a second.

Then two.

Then.

Tessa shifted slightly.

Not pulling away.

Just… adjusting.

Adrian noticed that too.

Of course he did.

Everything about her.

He noticed.

When they finally packed up.

The silence returned.

But it wasn't uncomfortable.

Just… unfinished.

They walked out together.

Same direction.

Same pace.

Not talking.

But not distant either.

Outside the school.

They stopped.

For a moment..

Neither of them moved.

Then.

"I'll see you tomorrow," Tessa said.

The words came easier this time.

Less guarded.

Less distant.

Adrian nodded.

"Yeah."

A small pause.

Then she turned.

And walked away.

But not as fast as before.

Not like she was escaping.

And Adrian didn't move.

Just watched her go.

Again.

But this time.

There was no frustration.

No confusion.

Just something quieter.

Something steadier.

Because for the first time.

It didn't feel like he was losing her.

It felt like.

She was slowly letting him in.

And that?

That was new.
