Chapter 25 - Chapter 26: Almost

It wasn't planned.

None of it was.

That's what made it worse.

Or maybe

That's what made it real.

Tessa didn't mean to stay late.

She really didn't.

But the project deadline was closer than she thought, and Lily had already left.

So now

She was here.

Alone.

In an almost empty classroom.

The soft scratch of her pen against paper the only sound.

Until

The door opened.

She froze.

Just slightly.

Then slowly looked up.

Adrian.

Of course.

For a second

Neither of them spoke.

Then

"You're still here," he said.

"You too."

A pause.

Then

"I needed to finish this," she added, gesturing slightly to her notes.

Adrian nodded.

"Same."

He stepped inside.

Closed the door behind him.

And just like that

It was just them.

Again.

Too quiet.

Too close.

Too much.

He didn't sit across from her.

Not this time.

He sat beside her.

Closer than before.

Close enough that she felt it instantly.

That shift.

That awareness.

Her grip tightened slightly around her pen.

But she didn't move.

Didn't tell him to.

Didn't trust herself to.

"You're almost done?" he asked.

"…Yeah."

"Let me see."

She slid the paper toward him.

Their fingers brushed.

Neither of them pulled away.

Not immediately.

Just long enough for it to mean something.

Then

They both let go.

Slowly.

Adrian looked over her work.

Focused.

Serious.

But Tessa wasn't looking at the paper anymore.

She was aware.

Of him.

Of how close he was.

Of how easy it would be to just

Stop thinking.

"You fixed it," he said quietly.

She blinked.

"What?"

"The connection," he pointed lightly at the page.

"It's better."

"Oh."

A pause.

Then

"Thanks."

Soft.

Real.

Adrian turned his head slightly.

Looked at her.

Not casually.

Not briefly.

Fully.

And this time

She didn't look away.

Not immediately.

Something shifted.

Again.

But this time

It didn't feel small.

It felt like something breaking.

Or maybe

Something finally giving in.

"You're not avoiding me anymore," he said.

Quiet.

Careful.

Tessa swallowed slightly.

"I'm trying not to."

Honest.

And that?

That changed everything.

Adrian's gaze softened

Just a little.

"Why?"

She hesitated.

Because answering that

Meant saying something she hadn't fully admitted to herself yet.

But he was still looking at her.

Waiting.

And for some reason

She didn't want to lie.

"…Because it's harder now," she said.

Barely above a whisper.

Adrian's breath slowed.

"How?"

She let out a small breath.

"You don't act like before," she said.

"And I don't know what to do with that."

There it was.

The truth.

Not all of it.

But enough.

Adrian shifted slightly closer.

Not rushing.

Not forcing.

Just… closing the space.

"You don't have to do anything," he said.

Her heart started beating faster.

"That's not how this works."

"Then how does it work?"

She shook her head slightly.

"I don't know."

And that?

That was the most honest thing she'd said yet.

Silence fell between them.

But it wasn't empty.

It was full.

Heavy.

Like something was about to happen

And neither of them knew how to stop it.

Or if they even wanted to.

Adrian's hand moved slightly.

Not touching her.

Just close.

Close enough that she noticed.

Close enough that it mattered.

"Tessa—"

He stopped.

Because saying her name like that

Felt different now.

More personal.

More real.

Her breath caught.

And this time

She didn't pull away.

Didn't create distance.

Didn't stop it.

Adrian leaned in slowly.

Carefully.

Like he was giving her time to move.

To stop him.

To say something.

She didn't.

Her eyes dropped briefly to his lips

Then back to his eyes.

And that

That was enough.

The space between them disappeared.

Not all at once.

But slowly.

Like neither of them wanted to be the one to break it.

Her hand shifted slightly

Brushed against his.

This time

Neither of them moved away.

"Tessa…"

Her name again.

Softer.

Closer.

And then

The door opened.

The sound snapped through the moment like glass breaking.

Both of them pulled back instantly.

Too fast.

Too sudden.

Like they'd been caught doing something they weren't supposed to.

Vanessa stood at the door.

Her eyes flicked between them.

Taking in everything.

The distance.

The tension.

The almost.

A slow smile formed on her lips.

"Well," she said lightly, stepping inside.

"This is interesting."

Tessa's chest tightened.

The moment

Gone.

Just like that.

Adrian didn't say anything.

Didn't look away.

But something in his expression darkened.

Subtly.

Dangerously.

Vanessa tilted her head slightly.

"Should I come back later?" she asked sweetly.

"Or did I already ruin it?"

Silence.

Heavy.

Uncomfortable.

Tessa stood quickly.

Grabbing her bag.

"I was just leaving."

Her voice wasn't steady.

Not completely.

But she didn't stay.

Didn't look at him.

Didn't give herself time to think.

She walked past Vanessa

Out the door

And didn't stop.

Adrian stayed where he was.

Unmoving.

Watching the door long after she disappeared.

His jaw tightened.

Not because of Vanessa.

Not because of the interruption.

But because of what almost happened.

And how close he'd come

To crossing a line he wasn't sure he could come back from.

Vanessa stepped further into the room.

"So," she said casually, "that's where we are now?"

Adrian didn't look at her.

Didn't answer.

Because his mind wasn't there.

It was still

With her.

The way she didn't pull away.

The way she looked at him.

The way she said his name

Like it meant something.

And that?

That changed everything.

Because now

There was no going back.
