Chapter 19 - Chapter 20: Breaking Point

The day felt longer than it should have.

Every class dragged.

Every hallway felt heavier.

And no matter where Tessa went.

The whispers followed.

Quieter now.

But sharper.

Because now she understood them.

And that made it worse.

By the time school ended.

She didn't wait.

Didn't stop for Lily.

Didn't check her phone.

She just walked.

Fast.

Like distance alone could fix the way everything felt.

It didn't.

"Teresa."

Her steps faltered.

Just for a second.

Then continued.

"Teresa, wait."

Closer this time.

She stopped.

Not because she wanted to.

But because something in his voice made it hard not to.

Slowly.

She turned.

Adrian stood a few feet away.

No crowd.

No noise.

Just the two of them.

For once.

"What?" she asked.

Her voice was steady.

But not soft.

Not anymore.

Adrian took a step closer.

Careful.

Like he already knew pushing too hard would make her leave again.

"We need to talk."

Tessa let out a quiet breath.

"We've already established that we don't."

"That was before."

"And this is now," she said.

"Nothing's changed."

"That's not true."

The words came out sharper than he intended.

She noticed.

Of course she did.

"Then what has?" she asked.

Silence.

For a second

Adrian didn't answer.

Because there were too many things.

And none of them were easy to say.

"I messed up."

Simple.

Direct.

Real.

Tessa stilled.

Not because she hadn't expected it

But because of how he said it.

No arrogance.

No deflection.

Just… truth.

She looked at him.

Really looked this time.

And for a second

She saw it.

The difference.

But

"That doesn't fix anything."

Her voice didn't break.

Didn't soften.

But it wasn't as cold either.

Adrian nodded slightly.

"I know."

That surprised her.

Because she expected him to argue.

To push.

But he didn't.

"I'm not trying to pretend it does," he added.

A pause.

Then

"I just didn't think it would matter."

That made something in her chest tighten.

Not in a good way.

"Of course you didn't," she said quietly.

There was no anger in it.

Just… something heavier.

Adrian's jaw tightened.

"I was wrong."

Another pause.

The air between them shifted.

Less tense.

More… real.

"I didn't know you," he continued.

"Not really."

Tessa let out a small breath.

"And now you do?"

He hesitated.

Because the answer wasn't simple.

"…I'm trying to."

That landed differently.

Softer.

More dangerous.

Because it wasn't a line.

It was intention.

Tessa looked away briefly.

Her thoughts tangled.

Because part of her

A small part

Wanted to believe that.

And she hated that.

"I don't trust you," she said finally.

Honest.

Clear.

Adrian nodded.

"I know."

Again

No argument.

No defense.

And that made it harder.

Not easier.

"I don't know what you want from me," she added.

"I don't know either."

That made her look at him again.

Because that?

That wasn't expected.

"I just—" he stopped.

Ran a hand through his hair.

Frustrated.

Not at her.

At himself.

Then quieter

"I don't like how things are now."

Tessa frowned slightly.

"How things are?"

"Yeah."

A pause.

Then

"You avoiding me. Acting like I don't exist."

Something in his voice shifted.

Lower.

More controlled.

"But somehow everyone else gets your attention."

There it was.

Jealousy.

Not loud.

But real.

Tessa's expression hardened slightly.

"That's not your business."

"I know."

Then why did it sound like it bothered him so much?

Silence stretched between them.

Heavy.

Unfinished.

Adrian took a step closer.

Not enough to invade her space

But enough that she noticed.

"That guy—"

"Stop."

Her voice cut through instantly.

Firm.

Adrian stopped.

Watched her.

"I don't owe you anything," she said.

Each word clear.

Careful.

"But you don't get to act like this now."

That hit.

Harder than anything else she'd said.

Because she was right.

And he knew it.

"I'm not acting like anything," he said quietly.

"Then what are you doing?"

Silence.

For a second

He didn't answer.

Because he didn't have a clean explanation.

Not one that made sense.

"I'm trying," he said again.

Softer this time.

And somehow

That hit more than anything else.

Tessa's breath caught slightly.

Just for a second.

Her guard slipped.

Just a little.

And Adrian saw it.

Of course he did.

His gaze softened

His hand lifted slightly.

Like he was about to reach for her.

Her face.

Her hand.

Something.

But then

He stopped.

Right before.

His hand hovered for a second

Then dropped.

Because this time

He didn't cross the line.

And that?

That mattered.

More than either of them expected.

Tessa noticed.

Of course she did.

And something in her expression shifted.

Not fully.

But enough.

"I have to go," she said quietly.

Not as sharp.

Not as distant.

But still leaving.

Still choosing distance.

Adrian nodded.

Didn't stop her.

Didn't follow.

This time

He let her go.

Tessa turned

Started walking.

But her steps weren't as fast as before.

Not as rushed.

Because something had changed.

Not everything.

Not enough.

But something.

And that was the problem.

Adrian stayed where he was.

Watching her disappear.

Again.

But this time

It didn't feel like losing.

It felt like the beginning of something else.

Something slower.

Something harder.

Something he wasn't used to.

And for the first time

He didn't try to control it.
