Chapter 4 - CHAPTER 4:The Truth He Shouldn’t Know

The tunnel was cold.

Liana could feel it through her skin, through her bones, through the chaos still running inside her.

Her breathing hadn't steadied yet.

Her chest rose and fell too fast, like her body hadn't realized they had stopped running.

Or maybe… they hadn't really escaped at all.

She leaned back against the wall and closed her eyes for a moment.

Everything felt unreal.

Just hours ago, she had been standing in her house, waiting for her husband.

Now she was hiding in a dark tunnel, being chased by people she didn't even know.

Or maybe… people she should know.

Her eyes opened slowly.

She turned to him.

"Start talking," she said quietly.

Her voice wasn't shaking anymore.

"I need the truth. No more 'later,' no more 'you'll understand.' I'm done being in the dark."

He was watching her.

Not surprised.

Not rushed.

Just calm.

Too calm for someone who had just been running for his life.

"You've changed," he said.

Liana frowned.

"That's what you have to say right now?"

A faint breath left him.

"You don't panic the way you used to."

Her chest tightened.

Used to.

That word again.

"Stop talking like you know me," she said, her tone sharper now.

"Because I don't remember you."

That landed.

She saw it in his eyes.

Just for a second.

Something flickered.

Pain.

But it was gone just as quickly.

"You remember," he said quietly.

"You just don't want to."

Her heart skipped.

"What is that supposed to mean?"

He didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he walked a few steps away, running a hand through his hair.

Like he was deciding something.

Like whatever he was about to say mattered.

"Your name isn't just Liana Hart," he said finally.

Her body went still.

"What?"

He turned back to her.

"There was a time when that wasn't your name. When you weren't living in that house, waiting for a man who doesn't even see you."

Her chest tightened painfully.

"Don't," she said.

"Don't talk about him."

But that wasn't what shook her.

It was what he said before that.

"You're lying," she added quickly.

"Or you're confusing me with someone else."

"I wish I was," he said.

Silence filled the tunnel again.

Heavy.

Unavoidable.

Liana shook her head slowly.

"No… I would remember something like that."

"You would," he agreed.

Then his voice dropped.

"If they hadn't made sure you didn't."

Her breath caught.

"What did you just say?"

He stepped closer now.

Close enough that she could see every detail in his face.

The tension.

The exhaustion.

The truth he was holding back.

"Your past wasn't something you walked away from," he said.

"It was taken from you."

Her heart started racing again.

"No…" she whispered.

"No, that doesn't make any sense."

"It doesn't have to," he replied.

"It just has to be real."

She shook her head harder now.

"This is crazy. I lived my life. I remember my childhood. I remember everything."

"Do you?"

That question hit deeper than anything else he had said.

Because for a second…

She hesitated.

And she hated that she did.

"You're messing with my head," she said quickly.

"I'm trying to save your life," he answered.

Their eyes locked.

Silence stretched between them.

Then she took a slow breath.

"Who are you?"

This time, he didn't avoid it.

"My name is Daniel."

The name felt familiar.

Too familiar.

Like something buried deep inside her mind just stirred, then disappeared again.

She frowned.

"Daniel…" she repeated slowly.

He watched her closely.

Waiting.

But nothing came.

No memory.

No clear image.

Just that strange feeling.

Like she was supposed to know him.

"You still don't remember," he said quietly.

It wasn't a question.

She shook her head.

"No."

A small pause.

Then she added, more firmly,

"But I want to."

Something shifted in his expression.

"Be careful what you ask for," he said.

"Because once you remember, there's no going back."

"I already can't go back," she said.

Her voice was steady now.

"I left my husband tonight. I walked away from everything I knew. So don't tell me about going back."

That hit him.

She saw it.

A brief flicker in his eyes.

"Adrian doesn't know what he lost," Daniel said quietly.

Liana let out a soft, bitter breath.

"No… he doesn't."

Silence settled again.

But this time, it wasn't empty.

It was building.

"Why are they after me?" she asked.

Daniel's expression darkened slightly.

"Because you're not just some woman who walked away from a bad marriage," he said.

"You're connected to something powerful."

"How?"

He hesitated.

And that hesitation told her everything.

"You know," she said softly.

"Yes," he admitted.

"Then tell me."

He looked at her.

Really looked at her.

Like he was trying to decide if she was ready.

Before he could speak—

A loud metallic bang echoed through the tunnel.

Liana flinched.

Her heart slammed against her chest.

Daniel turned sharply toward the sound.

"They found us," he said under his breath.

Another bang.

Closer this time.

The metal door they had come through shook violently.

"Stay behind me," he said quickly.

Her fingers clenched instinctively.

Fear rushed back in full force.

"They're breaking in," she whispered.

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"Yeah… and this time, they're not here to scare you."

The door slammed again.

Harder.

The hinges cracked.

Liana's breath hitched.

"Daniel…"

He didn't look at her.

He stepped forward slightly, placing himself between her and the door.

The final blow came—

And the door burst open.

Figures rushed in.

Dark.

Fast.

Deadly.

Liana's heart stopped.

And in that moment, she realized the truth.

This wasn't just about her past anymore.

This was a war.

And she was right in the middle of it.
