Chapter 7 - CHAPTER 7: The Man Who Owns the Shadows

They didn't stop running.

The tunnel stretched endlessly ahead, dark and suffocating, the air growing colder with every step. Liana's lungs burned, her legs aching, but Daniel's grip on her hand never loosened.

Behind them, the footsteps echoed.

More than before.

Closer than before.

"They're gaining on us," she said between breaths.

"I know."

His voice was steady, but she could feel the tension in the way he held her.

They turned sharply into another narrow passage.

This one was tighter.

Darker.

Almost choking.

"Where are we going?" she asked.

"Somewhere they won't expect."

"That doesn't sound reassuring."

"It's not supposed to be."

Despite everything, a small, breathless laugh escaped her.

Then it faded just as quickly.

Because the fear was still there.

Growing.

"Daniel…" she said, her voice quieter now. "What you said earlier…"

He didn't slow down.

"About Adrian," she continued. "About nothing being real…"

Silence.

"I need to know," she said. "Was any of it true at all?"

He finally spoke.

"Some of it was."

Her chest tightened. "Like what?"

He hesitated.

Then—

"The way he looked at you."

Her heart skipped.

"That wasn't fake."

Something about that answer unsettled her more than a lie would have.

"And everything else?" she asked.

"Control," he said simply.

The word landed hard.

"He chose your life. Your memories. The people around you. Everything."

Liana shook her head, even as doubt crept in.

"No… you're wrong. I lived with him. I saw him every day. You can't fake something like that."

Daniel stopped suddenly.

So abruptly that she nearly ran into him.

When he turned to face her, his eyes were sharp.

"People like Adrian don't fake things," he said quietly. "They create them."

A chill ran down her spine.

"What does that even mean?"

"It means," he continued, "if he wanted you to believe the sky was falling, you'd look up and see it breaking."

Her breath caught.

"That's impossible."

"That's power."

Silence fell between them.

Heavy.

Uncomfortable.

Real.

Before she could respond—

A sound cut through the tunnel.

Not footsteps this time.

Something else.

A low mechanical hum.

Daniel's expression changed instantly.

"We're too late."

Her heart dropped. "Too late for what?"

The lights above them flickered—

Then turned red.

A sharp metallic sound echoed.

Like something locking into place.

Liana's pulse spiked. "Daniel…"

"They've sealed the exits," he said.

Panic rushed in fast. "What? How—"

"He's here."

The words hit her like a physical force.

Her voice dropped to a whisper.

"Adrian…?"

As if answering her—

A voice filled the tunnel.

Calm.

Smooth.

Familiar.

"Liana."

Her entire body froze.

No.

No, no—

That voice—

It wrapped around her like something warm and terrifying at the same time.

"You've made this much harder than it needed to be," Adrian continued, his tone almost gentle.

Liana's breath trembled.

"He sounds… normal," she whispered.

Daniel's jaw tightened. "That's the most dangerous version of him."

The voice echoed again.

"You're tired," Adrian said. "You're scared. I can hear it in your breathing."

Her chest tightened instinctively.

How could he—

"You don't belong in the dark like this," he went on. "Come back to me."

Her heart twisted painfully.

For a second—

Just a second—

It sounded right.

Safe.

Like something she was supposed to do.

Daniel stepped in front of her again.

"Don't listen to him."

But it was hard.

Too hard.

"Liana," Adrian said softly, "you know I would never hurt you."

Her throat tightened.

A memory flickered—

His hand on hers.

His voice close to her ear.

"You're mine."

She gasped.

Daniel noticed immediately. "What is it?"

"I… I remember something," she said, her voice shaking. "He said—"

"Don't," Daniel cut in sharply. "Don't let him pull you in."

The voice came again, softer now.

More personal.

"Did he tell you the truth?" Adrian asked. "Did he tell you what you really are?"

Liana's heart slammed against her ribs.

Her eyes flicked to Daniel.

He went still.

That was enough.

Fear crept in deeper.

"Daniel…" she whispered. "What does he mean?"

Adrian answered for him.

"He won't tell you," he said calmly. "Because if you knew… you wouldn't stay with him."

"That's not true," Daniel said sharply.

"Isn't it?" Adrian replied.

Silence followed.

Dangerous silence.

Liana felt like she was standing between two truths—

And neither one felt safe.

"Liana," Adrian continued, his voice lowering, "you were never meant to run."

Her chest tightened.

"You were made to stand beside me."

Her breath stopped.

Made?

"What does that mean?" she asked, her voice barely there.

Daniel stepped closer. "Don't listen to him."

But Adrian didn't stop.

"You think your memories were stolen," he said. "They weren't."

Her heart pounded wildly.

"They were corrected."

The word shattered something inside her.

"No…" she whispered.

"Come back," Adrian said again, softer now. "Before he destroys what's left of you."

Tears burned her eyes.

Her grip on Daniel's hand tightened.

"Tell me he's lying," she said.

Daniel didn't hesitate this time.

"He is."

But something—

Something in his voice—

Wasn't strong enough.

And that scared her more than anything.

The red lights flickered again.

Then—

A loud metallic click echoed.

A door ahead of them slowly began to open.

Bright light spilled into the dark tunnel.

Blinding.

Waiting.

A way out.

Or a trap.

Daniel's grip tightened.

"Don't go near it," he said.

But Liana couldn't look away.

Because from the light—

A figure stepped forward.

Tall.

Familiar.

Terrifyingly calm.

Adrian.

And when their eyes met—

He smiled.

Like he had never lost her at all.
