Chapter 4 - Chapter 4 — A Dangerous Game

Silence lingered long after his words.

"You belong to my world."

Elena didn't move.

Didn't blink.

Didn't look away.

But something inside her shifted.

Not fear.

Not yet.

Something sharper.

"If this is your way of asking me to stay," she said calmly, "you're terrible at it."

For a moment—

Nothing.

Then Adrian's lips curved slightly.

Amusement.

Rare. Dangerous.

"I'm not asking."

Of course he wasn't.

Elena exhaled slowly, forcing her pulse to stay steady.

"Then what do you want?"

A simple question.

But the air changed the second it left her lips.

Adrian studied her.

Not like a man looking at a woman—

But like a predator deciding what to do with something… unexpected.

"You accessed something that doesn't exist," he said.

"You followed a trail that was never meant to be seen."

A step closer.

"You found me."

Each word landed heavier than the last.

Elena tilted her head slightly. "And?"

That—

That wasn't the reaction he expected.

Interesting.

"People disappear for less," Adrian said quietly.

"Then why am I still here?" Elena shot back.

A beat.

A slow one.

Adrian's gaze sharpened.

"Because I haven't decided yet."

The tension in the room tightened.

This wasn't just a conversation anymore.

It was a test.

And they both knew it.

Elena crossed her arms, grounding herself.

"If you're trying to scare me, you're doing a decent job."

A lie.

A good one.

Adrian noticed.

Of course he did.

"Decent isn't enough."

He moved past her.

Close enough for his presence to linger.

"Fear is only useful when it controls you."

Elena turned slightly, following his movement.

"And what do you want? Control?"

A pause.

Then—

"I already have it."

Not arrogance.

Just fact.

A knock broke the moment.

Soft.

Respectful.

Adrian didn't turn.

"Come in."

The door opened.

One of his men stepped inside.

"There's an issue."

Adrian's expression didn't change. "Speak."

"They found the breach."

Elena's attention snapped.

Breach?

"They're trying to trace it back… to her."

Silence.

Heavy.

Dangerous.

For the first time—

Elena felt it.

Real danger.

Not from Adrian.

But from whatever world he controlled.

"If they find her," the man continued carefully, "they won't wait for your decision."

That meant one thing.

She wouldn't be "brought in."

She'd be eliminated.

Clean.

Quiet.

Gone.

Adrian finally looked at her again.

This time—

Different.

Calculating.

Fast.

Choices being made in seconds.

"Then they won't find her," he said.

Simple.

Absolute.

The man hesitated. "Sir, if we interfere—"

"I didn't ask for risks," Adrian cut in.

"I gave an order."

"Yes, sir."

The door closed.

Elena stood there, processing.

"They're going to kill me," she said flatly.

Adrian didn't deny it.

"They'll try."

A chill ran through her spine.

"And you?"

Another pause.

Longer this time.

Adrian stepped closer again.

Not threatening.

But not safe either.

"I don't like people touching what's mine."

The words hit harder than they should.

Elena frowned. "I'm not yours."

Adrian's gaze darkened slightly.

"Not yet."

Silence.

Then—

Elena let out a small, breathless laugh.

"You're insane."

"Maybe."

He didn't deny it.

That made it worse.

Adrian turned away slightly, already moving on.

"From this moment," he said, "you don't leave without me knowing."

"Wasn't planning to stay," Elena replied.

"You don't have a choice."

Blunt.

Final.

Elena clenched her jaw.

"So what? I'm your prisoner now?"

Adrian stopped.

Then glanced back at her.

"No."

A pause.

A dangerous one.

"You're under my protection."

And somehow—

That felt even worse.

Elena looked at him.

Really looked this time.

At the man who could decide her fate with a sentence.

Who controlled a world she didn't understand.

Who could protect her—

Or destroy her.

"…And if I refuse?" she asked quietly.

Adrian held her gaze.

Unmoving.

Unshaken.

"You won't."

Not confidence.

Certainty.

For the first time since this started—

Elena didn't have a response.

Because deep down—

She already knew.

He was right.

The game had started.

And she was already inside it.

To be continued...
