Chapter 8 - CHAPTER 8: THE VELVET NOOSE

Night didn't just fall.

It claimed the academy.

Lights dimmed across the grounds, shadows stretching longer, thicker—like they were waiting for something to begin. And in a place like this, night was never quiet.

It was alive.

And tonight… it was watching.

Seraph stood at the edge of the upper balcony, overlooking the city beyond the hidden veil. Berlin glittered in the distance—bright, unaware, human.

Safe.

A world she didn't belong to.

A world she could never return to.

"You always stand where the drop is highest."

She didn't turn.

Didn't need to.

"I like knowing there's nothing behind me," she said.

Kaelen stepped beside her, leaning casually against the railing. His presence didn't disturb her space—but it didn't fade either.

"You're expecting an attack."

"I'm expecting honesty."

A pause.

"That's more dangerous."

That earned a faint shift in his expression.

Not amusement.

Understanding.

A pulse moved through the air.

Subtle.

But strong enough for every supernatural within range to feel.

An invitation.

The Velvet Noose.

Seraph's eyes lifted slightly.

She felt it instantly.

Not just a location.

A signal.

Power calling to power.

"You going?" Kaelen asked.

She didn't answer right away.

Her gaze stayed on the horizon.

"I wasn't planning to."

"But you changed your mind."

Now she looked at him.

Just briefly.

"Something there wants me to."

And that alone—

Was enough.

The Velvet Noose didn't exist on any map.

You didn't find it.

You were allowed in.

A flicker of light.

A shift in space.

And suddenly—

They were there.

Music pulsed through the air, deep and hypnotic. Lights moved like living things, bending around bodies that didn't belong to the human world. Power lingered in every corner—thick, intoxicating, dangerous.

No rules.

No limits.

Just control… or the lack of it.

Seraph stepped inside.

And the entire room felt it.

Conversations slowed.

Glances shifted.

Something about her presence didn't blend.

It disrupted.

Kaelen walked beside her, calm but alert. His gaze moved across the crowd, picking up every detail, every shift.

"You're drawing attention again," he muttered.

"I'm not doing anything."

"That's the problem."

At the center of the club, a raised platform hovered slightly above the ground. Figures sat there—watching, judging, deciding.

Powerful ones.

Old ones.

The kind that didn't show themselves unless something worth seeing appeared.

Tonight—

That something was her.

Seraph felt their attention like pressure against her skin.

But she didn't react.

Didn't bow.

Didn't acknowledge.

She simply walked deeper into the crowd.

Nyxara appeared from nowhere, slipping into step beside her with a smirk already in place.

"Well," she said, sipping from a glass that shimmered unnaturally, "you've officially become the main attraction."

Seraph didn't look at her.

"I didn't ask for it."

"No one ever does," Nyx replied lightly. "That's what makes it fun."

Her eyes flickered toward the platform above.

"They're watching you."

"I know."

"And?"

Seraph's gaze remained steady.

"Let them."

Nyx smiled.

Slow.

Interested.

"Oh… this is going to get messy."

Across the room—

Valeria stood with a group of elites, her posture flawless, her expression carefully composed.

But her eyes—

They burned.

Not with anger this time.

With intent.

Calculated.

Cold.

"You're staring," one of them murmured.

"She embarrassed me," Valeria replied quietly.

"And?"

Valeria's lips curved slightly.

"I don't repeat mistakes."

Back on the floor—

The music shifted.

Lower.

Darker.

The energy in the room changed instantly.

A signal.

Something was about to happen.

The crowd moved subtly, forming space without being told.

Instinct.

Respect.

Or fear.

Seraph felt it.

That same pull again.

Stronger now.

Closer.

Her steps slowed.

Then stopped.

At the center of the floor.

The lights flickered once.

Twice.

Then dimmed completely.

Silence fell.

Heavy.

Absolute.

And then—

A voice.

"Show us."

It echoed from everywhere at once.

Not loud.

But impossible to ignore.

Seraph's eyes narrowed slightly.

She didn't ask who.

She already knew.

The ones above.

Watching.

Testing.

Kaelen stepped forward slightly.

"Don't," he said under his breath.

Seraph didn't move.

"Why?" she asked quietly.

"Because this isn't curiosity," he replied. "This is a trap."

A pause.

Then—

"Everything here is."

Her eyes lifted toward the platform.

And for the first time—

She acknowledged them.

A mistake.

Or a decision.

It wasn't clear.

But it changed everything.

A figure stood from the shadows above.

Tall.

Elegant.

Dangerous.

"Power like yours," the voice continued, smoother now, controlled, "does not belong hidden."

Seraph's expression remained still.

"Then look harder," she said.

A ripple moved through the room.

Not anger.

Interest.

The figure tilted its head slightly.

"Or perhaps… it's already leaking."

That—

Hit.

Not visibly.

But internally.

Because it was true.

And she knew it.

Without warning—

The floor beneath her cracked.

A pulse of energy surged upward, forcing the crowd back.

The test had begun.

Kaelen's stance shifted instantly.

Ready.

But he didn't interfere.

Not yet.

Because this wasn't something he could stop.

Seraph stood at the center.

Still calm.

Still controlled.

But her eyes—

They flickered.

Just slightly.

Gold.

The pressure around her intensified.

The air grew heavier.

Thicker.

Charged.

The figure above smiled faintly.

"There it is…"

And then—

Something inside her moved.

Not willingly.

Not fully.

But enough.

A second pulse erupted.

Stronger.

Sharper.

Uncontrolled.

The lights shattered.

Glass rained from above.

The entire club shook.

And for a brief—

Dangerous—

Moment…

Everything went silent.

Then chaos followed.
