Chapter 10 - CHAPTER 10: THE AFTERMATH

No one followed her.

Not this time.

The doors of the Velvet Noose closed behind Seraph, sealing the chaos inside. The noise, the fear, the whispers… all of it stayed trapped within those walls.

Outside, the night felt colder.

Quieter.

But not calmer.

She walked without direction at first, her steps steady, controlled—but her mind wasn't.

Something had happened.

Not just power.

Not just loss of control.

That moment…

It didn't feel like her.

Her fingers curled slightly.

Unconsciously.

As if remembering something her mind couldn't fully reach.

"I almost lost it."

The words came out under her breath.

Low.

Sharp.

Unacceptable.

She didn't like not being in control.

She never lost control.

And yet—

That presence.

That pull.

It hadn't forced her.

It had… answered.

That was worse.

"You didn't almost lose it."

The voice came from behind.

Calm.

Certain.

Kaelen.

Of course.

Seraph didn't stop walking.

"Go back inside," she said.

"No."

A pause.

Then—

"You didn't lose control," he repeated. "You let something take over."

Now she stopped.

Slowly.

Turned just enough to look at him.

Her eyes were normal again.

Amber.

Cold.

But deeper now.

"You think you understand what that was?"

"I think it wasn't you."

Silence.

That answer hung between them.

Uncomfortable.

Because part of her agreed.

And she didn't like that.

Kaelen stepped closer.

Not too close.

Careful this time.

Measured.

"That wasn't strength," he said. "That was something else."

Seraph held his gaze.

"And you're still standing here."

A beat.

"Why?"

Simple question.

But heavy.

Kaelen didn't answer immediately.

Didn't look away.

"Because you didn't kill anyone," he said.

Her expression didn't change.

"That's your standard?"

"No," he replied. "That's your control."

Silence again.

But different now.

Less sharp.

More… aware.

"You should stay away from me," Seraph said finally.

Not harsh.

Not threatening.

Just… true.

Kaelen exhaled quietly.

"That's not going to happen."

"I'm not asking."

"I know."

A faint shift in his posture.

More grounded.

More certain.

"That thing inside you," he continued, "it's not gone."

"I know."

"And next time?"

A pause.

Then—

Seraph looked away briefly.

Toward the dark line of trees beyond the path.

"It won't stop halfway."

Honest.

Brutal.

Real.

Kaelen nodded once.

Like he expected that.

"Then we make sure it doesn't get that far."

She looked back at him.

There it was again.

That same look.

Like he was stepping into something he didn't fully understand—

And choosing to stay anyway.

"You don't get involved in this," she said.

"I already am."

"You don't even know what this is."

"I don't need to."

A beat.

"I know it's you."

That—

Caught her.

Not visibly.

But enough.

Because no one said things like that here.

No one stayed without reason.

No one chose danger willingly.

Except him.

Before she could respond—

A slow clap echoed from the shadows.

Deliberate.

Mocking.

Both turned.

Valeria stepped into view.

Alone this time.

But that didn't make it better.

If anything—

It made it worse.

"Well," she said smoothly, "that was… enlightening."

Seraph didn't react.

Kaelen's expression hardened slightly.

"You should've stayed inside," he said.

Valeria ignored him.

Her gaze stayed fixed on Seraph.

Sharp.

Studying.

"You can pretend all you want," she continued, "but everyone saw it."

Silence.

Then—

"You're unstable."

Seraph's eyes didn't shift.

Didn't flicker.

Nothing.

But the air around her cooled slightly.

Unnoticeable to most.

Not to them.

Valeria smiled faintly.

"There's something inside you," she said. "And it's not under your control."

Still nothing.

But Kaelen stepped forward slightly.

A silent warning.

Valeria didn't care.

"In fact," she added, her voice lowering, "I don't think it belongs to you at all."

That—

Almost got a reaction.

Almost.

Seraph's gaze sharpened just slightly.

Enough.

Valeria saw it.

And that was all she needed.

Her smile deepened.

"I wonder," she said softly, "what happens when it decides you're not needed anymore."

The silence that followed was heavy.

Tense.

Unstable.

Then—

Seraph spoke.

Finally.

"You talk too much."

Simple.

Flat.

But something beneath it—

Shifted.

Valeria held her gaze.

Unmoving.

Then—

She stepped back.

Slowly.

"I'll be watching," she said.

Not a threat.

A promise.

Then she turned.

And disappeared into the night.

The silence returned.

But it didn't feel empty anymore.

It felt… loaded.

Kaelen glanced at Seraph.

"She's not wrong."

Seraph didn't respond.

Because she knew.

That was the problem.

Deep beneath the academy

The chains cracked again

Louder this time

Clearer

A piece broke free

Fell

Shattered on the ground

The figure in the darkness lifted its head slowly

Smiling

"She's closer now…"

Power pulsed through the space

Stronger

Hungrier

Awake

And far above

Seraph's hand tightened again

Just slightly

As if something far below

Had just called her name
