Loreen's POV
Morning arrived faster than Loreen had expected.
He had come back to his quarters late, well past the point when most of the palace had gone quiet.
The investigation had stretched longer than he had expected and by the time he had spoken with the chief constable about next steps and walked back through the corridors, the candles in the hallways had burned low and the night had settled fully into the palace.
Sairis had already had his dinner and gone to bed when he got back last night.
He had asked the servant boy about Sairis before he even reached the bedroom door. The boy, whose thoroughness Loreen was beginning to genuinely appreciate, had listed every single thing Sairis had eaten for dinner and every single thing he had declined, in the order it had been offered, with brief commentary on each.
It was more information than Loreen had asked for and exactly the kind of information he had needed.
Sairis had eaten. That was what mattered.
