Chapter 15 - 15

Chapter 15

Baby's First Battle

The challenge came at exactly 3:07 PM.

Because of course it did.

The final bell rang.

Half the student body evaporated.

Lockers slammed.

Shoes squeaked.

A grappling hook shot past a window.

Jake blinked.

"…That's not correlated with crime statistics at all."

Behind him, Izuku Midoriya was already flipping pages frantically.

"Spike in city-wide incidents occurs 4–6 minutes post-dismissal— possible patrol rotation alignment—"

A smoke pellet popped in the hallway.

Someone shouted, "IT'S MORPHIN TIME!" in the distance.

Jake rubbed his temples.

"Normal."

The Challenge

"Farm boy!"

Jake turned.

Yang Xiao Long stood at the far end of the courtyard.

Torchic perched confidently on her shoulder.

Beside her, Blake Belladonna leaned casually against a tree.

"Your first battle," Yang announced dramatically.

Jake blinked.

"I just got registered."

"Exactly."

Mew floated beside him.

"Mew."

Yang pointed.

"Two-on-two. Trainer and Pokémon."

Jake swallowed.

"I don't know any commands."

"Figure it out," she grinned.

Blake's Alolan Meowth stretched lazily.

The Field

The battle circle formed quickly.

Spectators gathered.

Including:

Peter Parker with Joltik peeking from his sleeve.

Dick Grayson eating popcorn like this was pay-per-view.

Katsuki Bakugo already yelling unsolicited advice.

Wednesday Addams observing like a coroner.

Even Kara stood near the back.

Arms crossed.

Expression unreadable.

Round One

"Go!" Yang shouted.

Torchic launched forward with Ember.

Jake panicked.

"Mew— dodge?!"

Mew vanished.

Reappeared behind Torchic.

Tapped it lightly.

Psychic pulse.

Torchic stumbled.

Yang blinked.

"…Okay. That's rude."

Jake stared.

"…Did we just—"

Torchic shook it off instantly.

Yang grinned wider.

"Again!"

Simultaneously—

Yang dashed forward.

Fast.

Jake barely blocked her incoming punch.

"Trainer combat counts!" she laughed.

He stumbled back.

Mew transformed mid-air—

Into Yang.

Perfect copy.

Hair.

Outfit.

Confidence.

The real Yang froze.

She stared at herself.

"…Okay I'd hit me."

The transformed Mew flexed.

"Me-yang."

Blake actually snorted.

Kara pinched the bridge of her nose.

"I am not impressed," she muttered.

Mew immediately shifted—

Into Kara.

Identical.

Pose.

Expression.

Subtle aura.

Jake looked away immediately.

"Absolutely not. Change back."

The Mew-Kara tilted her head.

Yang blinked.

"…Okay that's dangerous."

Kara's eyes narrowed slightly.

"Do not."

Mew returned to normal form, purring innocently.

Things Escalate

Torchic used Quick Attack.

Mew countered with Transform again—

This time into Torchic.

Two identical fire chicks collided mid-air.

Yang laughed hysterically.

"I love this!"

Jake ducked a punch barely.

Yang's combat style was straightforward but powerful.

She hit hard.

He blocked poorly.

She grinned at his attempts.

"You've got guts."

He wheezed.

"That's not helping."

Torchic (real one) used Peck.

Mew-Torchic mirrored perfectly.

The crowd murmured.

Midoriya scribbled furiously.

Mew exhibits perfect combat replication. Psychological destabilization factor high.

Blake finally stepped in.

"Yang. Focus."

Torchic executed Flame Charge.

Mew reverted—

Used Psychic fully this time.

Torchic froze mid-air.

Gentle.

Controlled.

Lowered safely to the ground.

Silence.

Yang stopped mid-swing.

She blinked.

Then laughed.

"Okay. That's broken."

Jake lowered his guard slowly.

"…Did we win?"

Blake nodded once.

"Technically."

Aftermath

Yang walked over.

Sweaty.

Grinning.

Unbothered by the fact that physics occasionally betrayed her wardrobe mid-fight.

She stuck out her hand.

"Good first battle."

Jake shook it.

"You tried to concuss me."

"That's flirting."

Blake's ears twitched slightly.

Kara approached.

Her expression neutral.

"Mew's replication parameters need boundaries."

Jake nodded quickly.

"Yes. Agreed."

Yang leaned sideways, whispering loudly:

"Still would hit me."

Blake smacked her arm lightly.

Club Recruitment Chaos

Before Jake could process victory—

He was surrounded.

A girl with an eyepatch and dramatic posture stepped forward.

Rias Gremory smiled warmly.

"Occult Research Club would love someone with a legendary-tier partner."

Jake froze.

Behind her, a serious girl with long black hair adjusted her glasses.

Yukino Yukinoshita spoke calmly.

"The Service Club values initiative and responsibility."

A bubbly blonde grabbed his arm.

Raphtalia beamed.

"We could always use more help on community projects!"

Music suddenly swelled from nowhere.

Rachel Berry appeared dramatically.

"You have protagonist energy."

Jake backed up slowly.

"I just fought a fire chicken."

A duel disk snapped onto his other arm.

Seto Kaiba adjusted his coat.

"Pokémon are inefficient. Duel Monsters is the superior competitive medium."

Jake stared at the holographic Blue-Eyes.

"…Of course it is."

The Bell Effect

Suddenly—

Police sirens echoed faintly in the distance.

Explosions somewhere downtown.

A faint alien beam lanced into the sky.

Half the students vanished instantly.

Grappling hooks.

Teleport flashes.

Speed blurs.

Yang rolled her shoulders.

"Duty calls."

Blake nodded.

Peter looked apologetic.

"Gotta go!"

Midoriya ran off muttering about rescue probabilities.

Within seconds—

The courtyard was nearly empty.

Jake stood there.

Mew floating beside him.

"…There is absolutely a schedule."

Mew nodded solemnly.

Kara looked toward the skyline.

Then back at Jake.

"You handled yourself well."

He blinked.

"That sounded like praise."

"It was."

She turned.

Then added casually:

"And I am still not impressed with the imitation."

Mew puffed slightly in offense.

Final Beat

As Jake gathered his bag—

He noticed something.

A rooftop across the street.

Principal Darkholm watching.

Arms folded.

Expression calculating.

Behind her—

For half a second—

She shifted into him.

Then back.

Jake exhaled slowly.

"…I need a spreadsheet."

Mew floated higher.

He'd won his first battle.

Sort of.

And somehow—

That felt more dangerous than losing.
