Chapter 18
Organic. Free-Range. Possibly Possessed.
They arrived at dawn.
No engine noise.
No warning.
Just—
A long black car already parked at the end of the dirt road.
Jake blinked.
"…We don't have a gate yet."
Behind him, Kara squinted toward the field.
Barbara checked her tablet.
"They didn't trip any sensors."
Of course they didn't.
The passenger door opened.
Gomez Addams stepped out first, beaming like a man who had just discovered an estate sale for cursed heirlooms.
Beside him, radiant in gothic elegance, Morticia Addams glided forward.
Behind them—
Lurch emerged wearing gardening gloves and carrying a rake the size of a halberd.
And hopping efficiently along the gravel—
Thing wearing fingerless gloves and dragging an enormous pair of garden shears.
Jake stared.
"…Why is the hand more OSHA compliant than we are?"
"Mew," came a quiet agreement.
A voice spoke beside him.
"You missed a patch."
Jake jumped.
Wednesday Addams stood already in the middle of the tomato rows.
Nobody had seen her arrive.
Kara narrowed her eyes.
"…When did you get here?"
"Yesterday," Wednesday replied calmly.
The First Cut
The Addams did not inspect produce the way normal buyers did.
They sought:
The misshapen.
The off-colored.
The faintly whispering.
Morticia delicately lifted a carrot that was gently humming Gregorian chant.
"How vibrant."
Gomez picked up a cucumber that was vibrating ominously.
"Exquisite."
Thing snipped a vine with surgical precision.
It shrieked briefly in Latin.
Jake froze.
"…They're not supposed to do that."
Barbara tapped her screen.
"The leyline readings are still unstable."
Raven's warning echoed in his head.
Summoning backlash.
Leyline convergence.
Farm location: inconveniently optimal.
The Purple Tomato Incident
Pugsley wandered off with something spherical and glowing faintly violet.
Pugsley Addams inspected it with delight.
"Is this one safe?"
Jake opened his mouth.
He did not finish that sentence.
Pugsley bit into the purple tomato.
The tomato detonated.
Not explosively.
Energetically.
A focused blast of eldritch force launched him backward across the field with the concussive authority of a heroic punch.
He landed in a hay bale.
Silence.
Then—
A thumbs up emerged from the hay.
Gomez gasped in delight.
"Magnificent!"
Morticia clasped her hands softly.
"So lively."
They applauded.
Jake stared.
"…I need liability waivers."
They paid double on the spot.
In cash.
Antique cash.
Leyline Lecture (Inappropriate Timing)
Barbara began explaining the instability.
"After the summoning, the leyline flow fractured. This farm sits on a convergence node."
Rin had said something similar yesterday.
Morticia leaned closer.
"Convergence is so… intimate."
Gomez placed a hand at her waist.
"Volatile. Fertile."
They were now discussing soil quality in a tone that did not belong to agriculture.
Jake took three steps backward.
Kara blinked slowly.
"…Are they—"
"Yes," Barbara said flatly.
Wednesday did not react.
The Shed Request
Gomez suddenly turned toward the old equipment shed.
"Where do you keep the most anomalous specimens?"
Jake hesitated.
"…Define anomalous."
Thing was already pointing.
The shed door rattled faintly.
Something inside chanted in rhythm.
A zucchini screamed once in what sounded suspiciously like dramatic operatic agony.
Morticia inhaled.
"How charming."
Jake swallowed.
"The shed is warded."
Barbara nodded.
"Unbreakable containment glyphs."
Gomez smiled wider.
"Even better."
They requested privacy.
Jake made the mistake of agreeing.
The shed door closed.
Wards ignited.
Symbols flared across the wood.
Then—
Explosions.
Laughter.
More explosions.
A rhythmic thumping sound.
A brief purple beam shot through the roof.
Kara looked at Jake.
Jake looked at the sky.
Barbara simply noted timestamps.
Ten minutes later—
The shed collapsed.
Completely.
From the debris—
Gomez and Morticia emerged.
Disheveled.
Radiant.
Smiling ear to ear.
Morticia brushed dirt from her sleeve.
"Your soil is inspired."
Gomez handed Jake a check.
It had more zeroes than the original quote.
"A hundred times the new estimate," he said warmly.
"And we'll take the rest of the anomalies."
Lurch loaded the chanting vegetables carefully into the trunk.
Thing waved politely.
Wednesday appeared beside Jake again.
"They seemed satisfied."
Jake stared at the crater where his shed used to be.
"…I need new lumber."
Sterilization Attempt
Jake turned to Mew.
"Flamethrower."
Mew nodded solemnly.
Psychic aura intensified.
A sustained controlled blaze scorched the debris for ten full minutes.
The fire burned clean.
Bright.
Purifying.
When it stopped—
The soil underneath glowed faintly purple.
Then faded.
Nothing moved.
Jake exhaled.
"…Okay."
Barbara checked her readings.
"Residual instability remains."
Kara looked at the horizon.
"…So what happens next?"
As if on cue—
One of the remaining pumpkins rotated slowly.
It whispered:
"Advent."
Jake closed his eyes.
"…Of course."
Wednesday tilted her head slightly.
"I look forward to autumn."
The Addams' car disappeared down the road without making a sound.
The farm stood quiet again.
Minus one shed.
Plus one extremely large check.
Jake looked at the field.
Organic.
Free-range.
Possibly possessed.
He sighed.
"I pledged to the grass."
Mew floated beside him.
The leyline pulsed faintly beneath their feet.
And somewhere deep underground—
Something shifted.
Waiting.
End Chapter 18.
