Chapter 6 - When an Alpha Loses Control

The music shifted again as the celebration settled into a more relaxed rhythm. Couples drifted toward the dance floor beneath the warm glow of the chandeliers, their movements slow and elegant. Laughter carried easily through the room, blending with the steady clink of champagne glasses.

To most of the guests, the night was perfect. A successful engagement announcement. Powerful families united. Business alliances secured.

But Kendrick Walker barely noticed any of it.

His attention remained fixed on one person.

Damian Roberts.

Kendrick stood near one of the marble pillars while another group of guests offered their congratulations. He responded automatically, his voice calm and measured, exactly as expected.

"Yes, thank you. We appreciate your support."

The conversation ended. The smiles faded. And his focus drifted again—drawn back by something he could not ignore.

That scent.

Even buried beneath perfume, alcohol, and the mingled pheromones of hundreds of guests, it lingered in his awareness. Subtle. Distinct. Impossible to forget.

His jaw tightened.

Why can I still smell it?

Alpha senses were sharp, but not usually this precise in a crowded room. Yet his instincts kept returning to the same point, again and again, as if something inside him refused to let go.

Alehandra noticed immediately.

She stood beside him, greeting guests with effortless grace, but her attention remained fixed on the small details others overlooked—the tension in his shoulders, the way his gaze kept drifting toward the same section of the room.

She followed that direction once more.

The omega was still there.

Working quietly near the back of the ballroom, moving between tables with careful efficiency.

Alehandra studied him more closely now. He wasn't flashy or attention-seeking. Average height, slim build, dark hair slightly unruly despite the neat uniform. But there was something else about him. Something subtle.

He moved like someone accustomed to staying unnoticed.

That alone wasn't unusual for an omega working an event like this.

Kendrick's interest in him, however, was.

Alehandra smiled politely as another guest congratulated them, but her thoughts sharpened behind the pleasant expression.

Interesting.

Damian had become painfully aware that he was being watched again.

He tried to ignore it, focusing instead on collecting empty glasses from one of the banquet tables. But the feeling refused to fade. It lingered at the back of his mind, steady and uncomfortable, like standing beneath a spotlight.

Don't look.

Still, curiosity won.

He glanced up, and immediately regretted it.

Kendrick Walker was watching him.

Not casually. Not by accident.

Directly.

Damian's stomach tightened.

Why?

There were hundreds of people in the room—wealthy, influential, important people who belonged in Kendrick's world. Yet somehow the alpha heir of the Walker Corporation kept focusing on a catering worker.

It made no sense.

He quickly lowered his gaze and picked up another tray from the service table. Movement helped. Work helped. As long as he stayed busy, he could pretend the situation wasn't as strange as it felt.

Then something changed.

The air shifted.

A sharp alpha presence moved closer, cutting through the crowded room.

Damian froze for half a second before turning.

Kendrick Walker was walking toward him.

His mind immediately began calculating options. Step away. Turn around. Blend into the crowd. But the alpha reached him before he could move.

"Damian."

The quiet use of his name sent a ripple of unease through his chest.

He forced a polite expression. "Yes, sir?"

Kendrick stopped in front of him. Up close, the difference between them felt even more pronounced... the height, the presence, the quiet authority that surrounded him. His scent pressed against Damian's senses, sharp and unmistakable.

"You're avoiding me," Kendrick said.

Damian blinked. "I'm working."

"That's not what I meant."

Damian tightened his grip on the tray as guests moved around them, unaware of the tension building in the narrow space between them.

"I don't see why I would need to avoid you," he replied carefully.

Kendrick studied him. The omega's voice remained calm, but the subtle stiffness in his posture gave him away. Beneath the composure, there was tension—and something else.

Defiance.

Most omegas lowered their gaze when faced with a dominant alpha.

Damian did not.

"You disappeared earlier," Kendrick said.

"I had work to do."

"And now?"

Damian lifted the tray slightly. "Still working."

For a moment, Kendrick said nothing. But his awareness sharpened as the distance between them narrowed. The closer he stood, the stronger the scent became, wrapping around his senses in a way that made his chest tighten.

This wasn't normal.

Alpha instincts were not supposed to react like this outside of mating season. Yet something about Damian's presence stirred a restless energy he could not suppress.

Without realizing it, Kendrick leaned closer.

Damian felt the shift instantly.

Heat rose along the back of his neck, his instincts reacting before his thoughts could catch up. He stepped back quickly, the tray wobbling in his hands.

"Sir," he said, voice tight. "You're blocking the walkway."

Kendrick blinked, as if waking from a brief trance. Guests were indeed moving around them awkwardly.

He stepped aside.

But he didn't leave.

Damian exhaled slowly, unease settling deeper in his chest.

Why does this keep happening?

"You shouldn't be here," Kendrick said suddenly.

Damian frowned. "I work here."

"That's not what I meant."

Kendrick's gaze sharpened.

"Your scent doesn't belong in a room full of alphas."

Damian's heart lurched.

He can smell it.

Panic flickered through him, but he forced his expression to remain steady.

"You're imagining things," he said.

Kendrick didn't look convinced. Instead, irritation darkened his expression. The idea unsettled him, not because he feared it, but because he didn't understand it.

And Kendrick Walker did not tolerate mysteries he couldn't solve.

Before he could speak again, a familiar voice interrupted.

"Kendrick."

Alehandra approached with graceful confidence, her gaze moving calmly between the two men. In a single glance, she absorbed everything... the distance between them, Kendrick's posture, the omega's tension.

Interesting.

"You disappeared again," she said lightly.

Kendrick straightened. "I was speaking with someone."

Alehandra's attention settled briefly on Damian. Her smile remained polite, but something colder lingered beneath it... the quiet scrutiny of someone used to control.

Damian felt it immediately.

He lowered his head slightly. "Excuse me."

Neither of them stopped him this time.

He walked away quickly, disappearing into the flow of guests. Only when he reached the far side of the room did he allow himself to breathe again.

Behind him, Alehandra spoke softly.

"That omega interests you."

Kendrick didn't answer.

Her head tilted slightly. "You've spoken to him twice tonight."

Still silence.

Her smile deepened, thoughtful now rather than pleasant.

"How unusual."

Kendrick's eyes remained fixed on the space where Damian had vanished. His instincts were still unsettled, still reacting, still pulling his attention in the same direction.

"I don't know what you're implying," he said calmly.

Alehandra hummed softly. "I'm not implying anything."

Her gaze sharpened.

"I'm observing."

A quiet realization settled into her thoughts.

Kendrick Walker had always been controlled. Predictable. Unshakable.

Until tonight.

Until that omega appeared.

And Alehandra Peters had just witnessed something rare. For the first time in years.... The alpha heir of the Walker empire had come dangerously close to losing control.
