Chapter 10 - The Danger of Recognition

Victor Hale's smile carried a quiet unease.

It was not loud or exaggerated. It spread slowly, controlled, like a man who had just discovered something worth examining. The expression alone was enough to tighten Damian's stomach.

The alpha standing a few feet away was no longer simply curious.

He was evaluating.

And powerful men who evaluated omegas rarely stopped at observation.

Victor's gaze moved between Damian and Kendrick with deliberate interest. "Interesting company tonight," he said casually.

His tone remained light, but the meaning beneath it was unmistakable.

Kendrick did not answer immediately. Instead, his posture shifted almost imperceptibly, placing himself slightly between Victor and Damian. The movement was subtle, easy to miss, yet intentional.

Victor noticed at once.

Of course he did.

The corner of his mouth lifted again.

"Well," Victor continued, swirling the amber liquid in his glass, "I was not aware Walker Corporation had begun conducting business with catering staff."

Heat crept up Damian's neck. He tightened his grip on the tray, forcing his hands to remain steady.

"I was just offering drinks," he said quietly.

Victor did not look at him.

His attention stayed fixed on Kendrick.

"That is not what I meant."

The tension between the two alphas sharpened instantly, quiet but unmistakable.

Kendrick's voice remained calm. "You seem unusually interested in my conversations tonight."

Victor chuckled softly. "I am interested in many things."

His gaze returned to Damian.

"And rare things interest me the most."

Damian's pulse stumbled.

Rare.

The word settled heavily in his chest, triggering a flicker of unease.

Victor tilted his head slightly, studying him again. "You are new."

Damian shook his head. "No, sir."

Victor leaned forward just enough to close the distance.

Not close enough to touch.

Close enough to test.

He inhaled slowly.

His eyes sharpened.

Kendrick stepped forward immediately. "Victor."

The warning in his voice was quiet but unmistakable.

Victor looked amused. "Relax. I am not stealing your champagne."

But his gaze shifted back to Damian once more.

"Though I must admit, something about him feels familiar."

Damian's heartbeat quickened.

That was exactly the kind of statement he feared hearing from someone like Victor Hale.

Familiar meant attention.

Attention meant danger.

Kendrick's jaw tightened. "You are imagining things."

Victor raised an eyebrow. "Am I?"

The space between them grew heavier.

Around them, the ballroom continued as if nothing unusual were happening. Music played softly. Guests laughed. Conversations flowed. Waiters moved between tables.

Yet the small area near the window felt isolated.

Contained.

Like the center of a silent confrontation.

Victor took another sip of his drink, then turned his attention back to Damian.

"Tell me," he said, "how long have you worked events like this?"

Damian forced his voice to remain steady. "A while."

"And do you attend many gatherings hosted by powerful families?"

Damian hesitated briefly. "No."

Victor nodded slowly, as if confirming a private theory.

"That makes sense."

His gaze lingered longer than necessary, measured and calculating.

Kendrick spoke again. "That is enough."

Victor turned toward him. "You sound protective tonight."

"I am being practical."

Victor laughed quietly. "I have known you a long time, Kendrick."

His eyes gleamed with interest.

"And this does not look like practicality."

Damian felt the tray grow heavier in his hands. Every instinct urged him to leave immediately. Yet walking away now might draw even more attention.

Victor tilted his head again.

"You know what I think?"

Kendrick remained silent.

Victor continued anyway.

"I think you noticed something."

His gaze shifted toward Damian.

"And now I am wondering whether I should notice it too."

The words settled like a quiet threat.

Kendrick's voice cooled instantly. "You are overthinking a minor interaction."

Victor gave a small shrug. "Perhaps."

But the interest in his expression did not fade.

That was the real danger.

Victor Hale did not abandon mysteries.

He pursued them.

Damian cleared his throat. "I should get back to work."

Neither alpha stopped him.

Still, as he stepped away, he felt Victor's attention follow him through the crowd.

Assessing.

Calculating.

Remembering.

Within seconds, Damian disappeared into the movement of guests.

Victor watched him go before turning back to Kendrick.

"That was fascinating," he said quietly.

Kendrick's expression remained unchanged. "You are reading too much into it."

Victor smiled again. "I disagree."

He leaned slightly closer.

"That omega is hiding something."

Kendrick did not respond.

Victor continued, his voice low and thoughtful.

"And judging by your reaction, you already know that."

For the first time that evening, irritation flickered across Kendrick's expression.

"Drop it, Victor."

Victor stepped back with a soft laugh. "Relax."

He lifted his glass in a casual salute.

"I am simply observing."

Yet satisfaction lingered in his eyes.

He had seen enough to confirm his suspicion.

Across the ballroom, Damian forced himself to keep moving between guests, but his nerves refused to settle. Victor Hale had noticed him.

And Kendrick Walker had tried to intervene.

Neither of those things should have happened tonight.

He adjusted the tray again, steadying his breathing.

Just finish the shift.

Then go home.

But a quiet instinct told him the night would not end that easily.

Near the window, Victor spoke again.

"You know," he said thoughtfully, "I have attended events like this for years."

Kendrick remained silent.

Victor continued.

"And I have rarely seen you pay attention to anyone who was not powerful, useful, or dangerous."

His gaze shifted toward the crowd where Damian had vanished.

"So tell me."

Victor's smile returned, slow and deliberate.

"Which one is he?"

Kendrick did not answer.

That silence gave Victor everything he needed.

Victor Hale valued secrets.

Especially the kind capable of destroying reputations.

He finished his drink slowly, already planning his next move.

Because the engagement party had suddenly become far more interesting than expected.

And somewhere inside the crowded ballroom, the omega who had captured Kendrick Walker's attention had just become the most dangerous secret in the room.
