Chapter 12 - A Secret Hidden in Plain Sight

The ballroom continued to glow with effortless luxury.

Crystal chandeliers cast warm light across polished marble floors, while the soft music from the quartet blended with quiet conversations and occasional laughter. From a distance, everything still appeared flawless. Guests mingled comfortably. Cameras flashed. Smiles remained polished and confident.

Yet beneath the elegance, subtle tension had begun to gather.

Victor Hale had already noticed it.

He leaned casually against the bar, appearing relaxed, one elbow resting on the polished surface. The glass of whiskey in his hand remained mostly untouched. His posture suggested boredom, but his attention was sharp and focused.

Across the room, Damian Roberts moved between guests with steady professionalism, offering drinks with practiced efficiency.

Victor studied him with quiet patience.

Not openly.

Not carelessly.

Carefully.

Because Victor Hale trusted one skill above all others.

Observation.

The omega had already revealed something unusual. The faint scent earlier had been subtle, but unmistakable. Victor understood suppressors well. Wealthy families often used them to manage pheromone exposure during public events. They did not erase a scent entirely. They only reduced its strength.

Which meant if he detected even a trace, there was something worth investigating.

Victor tilted his head slightly as Damian passed a nearby table.

Across the ballroom, Kendrick Walker noticed Victor's attention immediately.

And that alone irritated him.

Victor became dangerous when curiosity took hold, and tonight that curiosity had clearly awakened.

Kendrick's gaze shifted toward Damian again. The omega moved quietly through the crowd, appearing calm and focused on his work. To most people in the room, he blended into the background without effort.

But Kendrick understood better.

Omega instincts were sharp, especially around dominant alphas. Damian had sensed his attention several times already. Yet he continued working with controlled composure, adjusting his movements without drawing notice.

That level of control was unusual.

Most omegas placed under the attention of multiple alphas would show visible tension. Damian did not panic. He adapted. He stayed alert while keeping his behavior steady.

He moved like someone who had learned to survive in dangerous environments.

That realization unsettled Kendrick more than he expected.

"Still thinking about him?"

Alehandra's voice interrupted his thoughts.

Kendrick released a slow breath. "You are persistent tonight."

Alehandra smiled faintly. "I am observant."

Her gaze moved across the room until she located Damian as well. The omega was now offering drinks near the dance floor, his posture controlled and professional.

"He is careful," she said quietly.

Kendrick glanced at her. "You noticed that too."

"Of course."

Alehandra watched him for several seconds before speaking again.

"He is trying to blend in."

"That is his job."

She shook her head slightly.

"No. That is survival."

Kendrick did not respond.

Alehandra continued studying the omega's movements. "He lowers his gaze around dominant alphas. Keeps his posture neutral. Avoids remaining too close to anyone powerful."

She turned back toward Kendrick.

"That behavior is not accidental."

Kendrick knew she was right.

It was practiced.

Alehandra took another sip of champagne.

"And Victor noticed something."

Kendrick's jaw tightened slightly. "Yes."

"That concerns me."

Alehandra rarely admitted concern, which meant the situation had already crossed an important threshold.

Across the ballroom, Damian approached the service station to replace his tray.

Lena glanced at him as he arrived.

"You look tense," she whispered.

"I am fine."

"You are gripping that tray like it offended you."

Damian forced a small smile. "Just a long night."

Lena leaned closer. "You ran into someone important again, did you not?"

Damian hesitated.

That hesitation told her everything.

Her eyes widened. "Oh no."

"What?"

"Who was it?"

Damian lowered his voice. "Two alphas."

Lena nearly dropped the glass she was holding. "Two?"

"Keep your voice down."

"Which ones?"

"Kendrick Walker again. And Victor Hale."

Lena stared at him in disbelief.

"You are joking."

"I wish."

She shook her head slowly. "That is very bad."

"I know."

"Those men notice everything."

Damian rubbed the back of his neck lightly. "I am just trying to finish the shift."

Lena frowned. "You should leave early."

"You sound like Kendrick."

Lena blinked. "Why would Kendrick Walker tell you to leave early?"

Damian immediately regretted speaking.

"Forget I said anything."

But Lena's curiosity had already ignited.

"You spoke privately with him?"

"Briefly."

"Damian."

He sighed again. "This is exactly why I did not want to mention it."

Lena leaned closer. "What did he want?"

"Nothing."

Even as he said it, the answer felt incomplete.

Because Kendrick's attention had not felt casual.

It had carried urgency.

Across the ballroom, Victor finished his whiskey and set the empty glass on the counter.

His gaze shifted toward the catering station.

He had noticed the quiet conversation. More importantly, he had noticed a small movement.

Damian's hand briefly touched the back of his neck.

Exactly where a suppressor patch would sit.

Victor's eyes sharpened instantly.

That confirmed his suspicion.

The earlier scent had not been imagination. The omega was using a suppressor, which meant his natural pheromones were being concealed.

Victor found concealed things irresistible.

He straightened slowly, his interest sharpening into intention.

Across the room, Kendrick noticed the change in posture immediately.

Victor was about to act.

And that realization unsettled him.

Because once Victor began investigating, secrets rarely stayed hidden for long.

Meanwhile, Damian picked up his new tray and turned back toward the ballroom.

The moment he stepped away from the service station, a familiar tension settled into the air. The sensation felt subtle at first, then stronger, like invisible attention narrowing around him.

He lifted his head instinctively.

Victor Hale was walking toward him.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Focused.

And in that moment, Damian understood something that made his stomach drop.

Victor was no longer curious.

He had decided to pursue the truth.

And Damian Roberts had just become the secret he intended to uncover.
