Chapter 17 – The Letters She Left
It had been a week since Care had left us, yet it felt like yesterday. The air still carried the heaviness of her absence. The school was back to its routines, but our hearts were shattered pieces scattered in every corridor, every classroom, every silent whisper.
Lyra sat on her bed, staring at the stack of letters Care had left. The envelope labeled each of our names neatly, and beside them was a small CD, neatly wrapped.
We have to do this together, Lyra thought. She wanted us to be together, one last time.
Lyra's POV
I called everyone to the living room. Ash was already sitting on the sofa, Ben leaning against the wall, Daisy quietly fidgeting with her hands, Nova pacing, and Cole sitting silently in the corner.
"Everyone… I know it's hard," I began, my voice shaking. "But Care… she left us something. Letters… one for each of us. And… a CD. She wanted us to have this. Together."
Their eyes were all on me, some red from crying, some filled with disbelief.
I handed the first envelope to Ash. "Ash… it's yours. Read it first."
Ash's hands shook as she took it, eyes widening as she saw Care's familiar handwriting.
Then I handed one to Daisy. "And this… it's yours."
Ben and Cole took theirs silently, and Nova's envelope was clutched tightly in her hands.
I swallowed hard, my throat burning. "She… she wanted us to know how much she loved us, even if she wasn't here anymore. She wanted us to remember her… not just in pain, but in everything she gave us."
I held up the CD. "This… we'll play it together later. She wanted us to hear her voice… one last time."
The room was heavy with silence. Everyone's eyes were fixed on the letters, trembling hands, lips quivering, hearts aching.
"She's still… here," I whispered to no one in particular, tears falling down my cheeks. "She's still with us, even like this."
Ash's POV
I sat down heavily, trembling as I slowly opened Care's envelope. My eyes fell on the words, and every breath caught in my chest.
"Ash… my soul sister. You were the first hand I held in this new world. The one who didn't leave me, even when I was broken inside. You taught me how to laugh again, how to fight, how to be me. Please… stay strong… for both of us."
I pressed the paper to my lips, tears streaming uncontrollably. "Care… my soul sister…" I whispered. Every memory of our nights together, our laughter, our arguments, our fights, our shared fears—they hit me all at once.
"I can't… I can't believe you're gone," I sobbed, curling into the sofa, letting the letter fall across my lap. "You were supposed to be here. You were supposed to fight. You… you can't leave me like this."
I felt Lyra's hand on my shoulder, grounding me, but even that small gesture couldn't stop the flood of grief. Every page of Care's handwriting was a dagger and a balm all at once—painful and comforting.
Daisy's POV
Daisy held her letter tightly, hands trembling. She hadn't known exactly what to expect, but the words were far more raw and real than she could have imagined.
"Daisy… I know we weren't always close. But I hope you know how much I admired you. You made me see strength in ways I didn't see in myself. Please… live fully, and never forget the love around you."
Daisy's breath caught. She sank to the floor, pressing the paper against her chest. "Care… I… I didn't realize…" Her voice broke. "You were so strong… and yet so… human. Just a girl. Just… my friend."
She remembered the moments they had laughed, argued, and studied together. The small acts of care, the tiny smiles, the way she had made everyone feel stronger just by existing.
"She trusted us," Daisy whispered, tears falling freely. "Even now… even in death. She trusted us with her heart. And we… we have to live it, for her."
Lyra Again
I looked around at them—Ash shaking, Daisy sobbing quietly, everyone's faces pale and wet with tears.
"She wanted us to be together, to remember her, and… to keep each other strong," I said. My own hands shook as I held my envelope. "And the CD… we'll play it together. Her voice… her laughter… her words. One last time, she wanted to be with us."
I took a deep breath, trying to hold myself together. "Care loved us… more than we could have imagined. And we… we have to honor that. We can cry, yes… but we also have to remember everything she gave us, and live for her, even if she's not here."
The room was heavy with grief, but for the first time, there was a small flicker of purpose in it.
We all sat together silently, letters in our hands, hearts breaking and healing at the same time. Care's words were her voice, her last gift, and even in absence, she had found a way to hold us close.
Lyra's POV
I sat on the sofa, the envelope trembling in my hands. I had waited for this moment, though I dreaded it.
Care's handwriting filled the paper like it had a heartbeat of its own:
"Lyra… my constant. My light in the darkness. You held me when no one else would, and you never let me fall. I can never thank you enough for every laugh, every word of comfort, every late-night call. You made me believe I could survive the world, even when it was cruel. If anything happens… know that I loved you with all my heart. Keep our memories close, and never forget me. Promise me you'll smile again, even when I am gone."
I felt my chest tighten. The words… they weren't just letters—they were her essence, her soul poured onto paper.
I pressed the letter against my lips, tears falling freely. "Care… why did you have to leave me? Why… why this early?" My voice cracked. "You… you were my anchor… my sister in spirit. You… you saved me every day without even knowing it."
I clutched the paper to my chest, sobbing quietly, letting every ounce of grief and love for her escape in trembling breaths.
"I promise… I'll live, Care. I'll live for both of us. I'll carry your light, always."
Even in her absence, I felt her presence in the room, as if the letter itself was breathing.
Nova's POV
Nova sat in the corner, her hands holding Care's envelope tightly, knuckles white. Her eyes, usually so composed, shimmered with unspoken pain.
"Nova… my protector, my shield. You saw me when no one else did. You stayed by my side when I wanted to hide, when I wanted to vanish. You made me strong… stronger than I ever thought I could be. Thank you, Nova. Thank you for every sacrifice, every word, every tear you shared with me. Please… don't mourn me too long. Live, for both of us."
Nova's hands shook as she read the words. Her throat burned, and her eyes filled with tears.
"She… she saw everything," I whispered to myself, though no one could hear me. "She knew… and she trusted me anyway."
I clenched the letter tightly against my chest, feeling the weight of every sleepless night, every secret worry, every moment I had spent keeping her alive in my heart.
"She wanted me to live… even if she can't," I said quietly, my voice breaking. "Care… I'll never forget you. You made me… me."
I let myself crumble for a moment, tears spilling down unchecked. Every memory of her—smiling despite pain, fighting despite weakness—flashed through my mind, raw and vivid. And through the grief, I promised silently, "I will honor you, Care. I will. Always."
Ben's POV
Ben had always considered Care like a little sister, though he would rarely admit it aloud. He had seen her struggles, her determination, and the quiet strength that had terrified and inspired him at the same time.
He opened her letter slowly:
"Ben… you were like a brother I never had. Always observing, always caring in your quiet way. You never let me feel small… and you always reminded me I could be more than I thought. Thank you… for being you, for believing in me even when I couldn't. Keep looking out for everyone, and remember me in the smiles of those around you."
Ben's chest tightened as he read. He sank onto the floor, the letter trembling in his hands.
"She… she thought of everyone," he whispered, voice choked. "Even now… even knowing she's gone… she wanted us to live."
His hands clenched around the paper, tears finally spilling over. "Care… my little sister… I'll never forget you. I'll keep your light alive, even if it breaks me inside."
He pressed the letter to his face, sobbing quietly, heart breaking with every word.
Cole's POV
Cole's fingers were rigid as he picked up Care's letter. The weight of it felt like her presence, heavy and undeniable.
"Cole… my rival, my partner, my silent strength. You made me push harder, laugh louder, and care deeper than I ever thought I could. Thank you… for every moment, every argument, every shared glance. You made me feel alive… even when I was fighting alone. If you read this… know that I believed in you, as I always hoped you'd believe in me. Stay strong, Cole. For both of us."
Cole's jaw tightened as his eyes burned with unshed tears. He sank onto the sofa, gripping the letter so tightly his knuckles whitened.
"She… she trusted me with her last words," he whispered, voice trembling. "She… she believed in me… even now."
He pressed the letter to his lips, feeling the tears spill freely. For once, he allowed himself to fall apart, remembering the way she had always teased him, challenged him, made him feel alive.
"Care… I will carry you in every step I take," he whispered. "Always. Always."
Even in her absence, he could hear her laughter in his ears, see her smile in his mind, and feel her strength pushing him forward.
The room was silent except for the soft, broken sobs of the six of us, each holding Care's words as if they were her heartbeat.
She had left us her last gift—letters, memories, and a promise to live. And though the pain was unbearable, through the tears, we could feel her presence, her love, her undying spirit guiding us forward.
And somewhere in the corner, the small CD rested, waiting. Waiting for the next chapter of her voice, her laughter, her essence to fill the room once more.
