Chapter 23 - Ch2- The Jog...

Chapter 2 – The Jog...

The morning air was crisp, almost sharp, but the group was full of energy. Laughter echoed down the neighborhood streets as the group jogged together, running in small clusters. The sun painted everything gold, and even the walls of the college seemed warmer than usual.

Care jogged at the far end of the lane, keeping her pace steady, her breathing controlled. Her lungs complained slightly—weak, as always—but she had trained them, forced them to grow strong. Her asthma wasn't going to beat her today. Not her.

Ahead, Cole and Ash ran side by side, their strides confident, easy, almost teasing each other. Care's gaze followed them silently, detached, but something tugged at her chest. She hated being noticed… but she couldn't ignore the way Cole moved. He was infuriating.

Care hummed softly to herself, a song flowing from her lips so low that no one could hear it. Her steps kept rhythm with the melody, and she didn't notice the world—or anyone else. For a moment, she was invisible, free, untouchable.

Until it happened.

Ash's foot came too close to hers. Care wasn't looking, lost in her song, lost in her own rhythm. A collision was inevitable.

"Oh!" Ash gasped as they bumped together.

Care stumbled backward, arms flailing, her foot catching the edge of the pavement. Panic bubbled in her chest, lungs constricting slightly. She tried to balance herself, but the world tipped sideways.

Cole reacted immediately. His long strides closed the distance in a heartbeat, hands outstretched. Care barely registered him. She felt solid hands grasp her wrist. Relief shot through her.

"Got you," Cole said.

"Drop me!" Care hissed sharply, frustration mixing with adrenaline. She tried to yank herself free.

Cole blinked, then slowly let go.

Care's body tumbled sideways. Gravity claimed her in an instant. The air whooshed past her ears. Pain struck her hip and shoulder, but worse was the humiliation—the sudden fall, the eyes of the group on her.

She hit the ground with a harsh thump.

Cole's jaw tightened. He knelt beside her. "Care! Are you okay?"

Care gritted her teeth, refusing to answer. Pride demanded she stand, but her body protested.

Ash was at her side, hands trembling. "Care! Your foot—"

Care waved her off, sitting up just enough to rub her shoulder. "I'm fine," she said, voice sharp. "Really."

Cole's gaze softened, though his jaw remained tense. "You could've broken something."

"I didn't," Care replied, brushing off dirt. "And I don't need anyone catching me."

"You almost fell on your side!" Ash exclaimed, worry and frustration mixing in her tone. "You—"

Care interrupted, glaring briefly. "It's fine. Stop fussing."

The group was quiet now. Everyone had stopped running, watching, holding their breath. Even the air seemed to pause for a second, like the moment stretched infinitely.

Lyra finally spoke, voice gentle. "Care… maybe you should slow down?"

Care shook her head. "No." She stood up slowly, steadying herself, brushing dirt from her clothes. Her song returned quietly to her lips, soft and unbothered, like nothing had happened.

Cole's hand lingered near her shoulder for a moment before he stepped back. His eyes held hers, scanning, judging, protective, confused. She caught it, but she didn't let herself soften.

Ben muttered under his breath, "She's… fearless."

Daisy glanced at him, expression unreadable. "Or stubborn."

Kevin and Alex exchanged looks. "She's… strange," Joong said finally.

Care ignored all of them. She didn't need their approval. She didn't need them to understand. She only needed to keep moving, keep herself in control.

After the group paused for a quick drink break, laughter bouncing between them, Care stumbled quietly along the path back toward her home. She didn't notice their attention at first.

From the bench where they rested, some of the group watched her carefully. Cole's gaze was sharp, measuring, something like irritation mixed with a strange curiosity.

"Look at her," Cole muttered, voice low but audible. "So… arrogant. Thinks she owns the world."

Ben snorted. "Arrogant? Or just… egotistic. Did you see the way she brushed us off after falling?"

Daisy's lips curled slightly. "She doesn't even care if anyone notices her. The quiet ones always think they're untouchable."

Alex laughed softly. "Untouchable or insane? That girl jogged as if she's a machine."

Kevin's eyebrows rose. "She's… weirdly disciplined. Kind of… scary, actually."

Joong shook his head. "Scary and mysterious. That stare…"

Cole's hand tightened around his water bottle. "Egotistic. I hate that attitude. Makes me… angry."

Lyra glanced at him, almost amused. "You're jealous."

Cole's jaw twitched. "No. Not jealous. Just… irritated that someone can act so… independent. Arrogant. And not even flinch when the world's staring at her."

"Independent or just… lonely?" Lyra countered softly, eyes following Care as she disappeared down the street.

Cole stayed silent, eyes narrowed, scanning the distance where Care's silhouette shrank toward her mansion. "Lonely doesn't explain the arrogance," he muttered under his breath, his voice a mix of irritation and something he refused to name.

The others chuckled or shook their heads, some whispering, some laughing quietly. Even with all their teasing and judgment, no one moved to follow her. Care's pace was steady, resolute, almost defiant. She didn't look back once.

Her chest ached slightly from the run, her shoulders stiff from the fall, but she didn't let it show. Pride, discipline, and the need to remain untouchable kept her walking tall, even if her hands shook slightly from the effort to control her breathing.

When she finally reached the gates of her mansion, the heavy doors seemed to welcome her with silence. She inhaled deeply, letting the quiet surround her, and allowed herself a fraction of release. She was safe here. For now.

Behind her, Cole's eyes lingered a moment longer. His jaw was tight, his hands clenched into fists, but there was something else—curiosity, concern, and the faintest stir of admiration he refused to admit.

Care, completely unaware of the storm of whispers and glances behind her, walked inside, shut the door quietly, and leaned against it, closing her eyes for just a second. The world outside could judge. It could whisper, laugh, or sneer. But she… she survived it, just as she always had.
