Chapter 14 - V1 Ch12- The MEETING...

Chapter 12 – The Meeting

(Part 1: Awakening & Reunion)

Care's POV – Waking Up

I opened my eyes slowly. The white ceiling of the hospital room blurred at first, then came into focus. Tubes, machines, the faint hum of monitors—it was all familiar yet terrifyingly final. My chest tightened.

I knew. I had known since the scans. The doctors had spoken gently, but the words had sunk deep into me. "Risky… low chances… surgery tomorrow."

I couldn't tell them I knew. Not yet. I couldn't ruin their hope. They needed to think I would fight. I would let them believe I would fight. But deep inside, I knew this would be my last meeting.

My hand brushed the side table. I could see my notebook, letters, everything I had prepared if… if I didn't come back. My pulse thumped painfully against the memory.

I breathed in slowly, willing myself to stay calm.

Night fells not dramatically but peacefully...

Care's POV – First Visitors

At 10:06 pm ( surgery is at 7:00 pm)

Minutes later, the door opened.

"Care! Oh my God, you're awake!" Lyra cried, rushing to my side.

Cole was just behind, his hand gripping mine like he wouldn't let go. "You scared us," he muttered, voice rough. His jaw was tight, but relief softened the lines around his eyes.

I managed a small smile, despite the heaviness in my chest. "I… I'm awake," I whispered.

Daisy's eyes were wide, shimmering with unshed tears. "Don't scare us like that again."

Ash stood slightly apart, still trembling, but her lips curved into a small, proud smile. "You're here. That's all that matters right now."

I wanted to tell them everything—the certainty in my chest, the knowledge that tomorrow might be final—but I forced the words down. Instead, I nodded. "I… I'll be okay. I just need… to see all of you."

Lyra's POV – Bursting in

At 10:30 pm

I hadn't known the extent of the relapse until the moment I saw her lying pale in the hospital bed. My chest felt as if it would shatter.

And then she opened her eyes.

"Lyra," she whispered, barely above the hum of the monitors.

I ran to her side, tears falling freely. "Care… oh Care…" I grabbed her hand, holding it tight. "Don't you dare… don't you dare leave me."

Her lips curved into a small smile, fragile, bittersweet. "I… I wrote something," she said, her voice trembling. "In my study… my drawer. A book… letters… for all of you. If… if something happens…"

I froze. My tears stopped, replaced with anger. "Something happens? Care! Don't say that! You're not leaving! You hear me? Not now, not ever!"

She squeezed my hand weakly. "I… I just want… you to have it. To remember… everything…"

I couldn't argue anymore. I buried my face in her arm, shivering. "You're going to survive. You will. I won't let you do anything else."

Care's POV – Speaking to Lyra

I let her cling to me, her voice a lifeline, her warmth grounding me. "Lyra… thank you. For… everything. For always being… my anchor."

She sniffled, brushing tears from my cheek. "I should be thanking you, Care. You… you made me realize how strong someone can be. Even when the world thinks you're fragile."

I nodded slowly. "I wanted you to know… if I don't make it, the book… and letters… they're mine, my thoughts… my love… for each of you."

Lyra shook her head violently. "Don't you dare give me that yet. You're going to wake up tomorrow and make me read it after you've beaten this. Understand?"

I couldn't help but smile faintly. "I'll… try."

Nova's POV – The Second Visit

After Lyra calmed down slightly, Nova stepped forward, her usual composed face softening. Her hands were clasped together tightly, betraying the storm inside.

"Care," she whispered, sitting at my bedside, "you've made it this far. You're still here. You've survived so much. And you… you are going to make it through tomorrow too. We'll be right here."

I looked at her, my chest heavy. "Nova… you know how much… you've made me strong. How you held me together when I felt broken… you gave me strength to fight, to smile, to become… who I am. You… saved me more than anyone knows."

Nova's lips trembled slightly. "And you'll fight tomorrow. I don't care what the doctors say. You'll fight. You always do."

I nodded, letting a single tear slide down my cheek. "I'll… try. But tonight… I need to see everyone, one by one. I need… to hold them, to tell them everything I feel."

Night Approaches – The Final Hours

As night fell, the waiting room grew quiet. The monitors hummed softly, and I could hear distant footsteps, murmured conversations from the nurses outside.

I called Lyra first, her voice soft yet panicked on the phone.

"Lyra… if… if something happens to me… there's a book… and letters… in my drawer. Give it to everyone," I whispered.

"Care!" she exclaimed, voice cracking. "Don't you dare. Don't you even think like that. You're going to wake up tomorrow, and we're going to celebrate that you beat this."

I smiled faintly. "I… know. But I want… them to have it… just in case."

Her voice softened. "You're impossible. Don't you dare scare me like that again."

I let her scold me, feeling the comfort in her tone.

After Lyra hung up, Nova joined me at my bedside, sitting quietly, hands clasped. "Do you remember… when I first met you?" she whispered. "You were broken, Care. Invisible to everyone, struggling to survive… and I… I didn't know if you'd fight. But you did. You became the strongest person I know. My strongest friend. My inspiration."

I nodded, tears slipping silently down my cheeks. "I… couldn't have done it without you. You… made me want to live, to fight… to smile. You made me… a topper. You made me… Care."

Nova squeezed my hand tightly. "And you're still that person. You're still going to fight tomorrow. No matter what."

I closed my eyes briefly, feeling the weight of their love, their care, their support. I let myself breathe it in, every heartbeat a farewell and a promise.

Care's POV – Alone Thoughts

Later that night, I lay in the hospital bed, staring at the ceiling. Sleep wouldn't come—not tonight. My chest ached, my mind raced.

I knew tomorrow could be final. I knew the risks. But I had spent every moment today holding them, telling them I loved them, showing them my gratitude.

I had said everything I needed to say, whispered every secret, shared every memory.

And now, all I could do was wait, breathing each second as though it were the last—and hope that somehow, somehow, I could survive.
