Chapter 28 - The Strike That Hurts

Isabella doesn't repeat mistakes.

She studies them.

Refines them.

And then—

She strikes again.

The city slept.

But she didn't.

Standing in the dim glow of her penthouse, Isabella traced her fingers over a map spread across the table.

Marked locations.

Connections.

Weak points.

And right at the center—

Luciano.

"He didn't break," one of her men said quietly from behind her.

Isabella smiled faintly.

"No."

A pause.

"Because I pushed the wrong place."

Her finger tapped lightly against the table.

Not Sophia.

Not directly.

"He chose her," the man added.

Isabella's smile faded slightly.

"Yes."

Her eyes darkened.

"And now I know exactly how far he's willing to go."

She turned slowly.

Calm.

Collected.

Terrifying.

"Prepare the next move."

The man hesitated.

"What kind?"

Isabella's gaze sharpened.

"The kind that forces him to feel it."

Back at the mansion—

Sophia couldn't shake the feeling.

That something worse was coming.

She stood on the balcony just outside Luciano's room, the cool night air brushing against her skin.

Her thoughts were louder than ever.

Faster.

Heavier.

Everything had changed.

And she felt it.

Deep down.

"You're thinking too much."

Luciano's voice came from behind her.

Sophia didn't turn.

"You don't think enough," she replied.

A pause.

Then—

"I think exactly as much as I need to."

She let out a quiet breath.

"That's not reassuring."

Luciano stepped closer.

Stopping just behind her.

Not touching.

But close enough that she could feel him there.

Steady.

Unmoving.

"She's not done," Sophia said.

"No."

"And this time… it's going to be worse."

"Yes."

Her chest tightened.

"You say that like it doesn't matter."

"It matters."

"Then act like it."

Luciano's gaze shifted slightly.

Watching her.

Studying her.

"You're still here," he said.

Her brows furrowed.

"What does that have to do with anything?"

"It means you already chose," he replied.

Sophia turned then.

Facing him.

Her heart steady—but her emotions anything but.

"Choosing to stay doesn't mean I stop thinking," she said.

"It means I start understanding."

A pause.

"And I understand that she's not going to stop until something breaks."

Luciano didn't deny it.

Because it was true.

"Then we break her first," he said.

The words were calm.

Cold.

Final.

Sophia's chest tightened.

"This isn't just about power anymore," she said.

"It never was."

Silence.

Then—

"It's about you."

Luciano didn't respond.

But he didn't deny it either.

A sudden knock broke the moment.

Sharp.

Urgent.

Luciano's expression darkened instantly.

"Enter."

One of his men stepped in quickly.

"There's been an incident."

Sophia's heart dropped.

"What kind of incident?" Luciano asked.

The man hesitated.

Just for a second.

Then—

"One of your financial houses… it's been compromised."

Luciano's gaze sharpened.

"How?"

"A targeted breach," the man said. "Files stolen. Accounts frozen. Contacts exposed."

Sophia's stomach twisted.

"That's not just an attack," she said quietly.

"It's sabotage."

Luciano didn't move.

Didn't react outwardly.

But the air around him—

It changed.

"Who?" he asked.

The man swallowed.

"Isabella."

Of course.

"She didn't hit your strength," Sophia said slowly.

"She hit your structure."

Luciano's eyes flicked to her.

Sharp.

Observant.

"Yes."

"And that means…" Sophia continued.

Her pulse quickened.

"…this isn't over."

"No," Luciano said quietly.

"It's just beginning."

Silence filled the room again.

But this time—

It wasn't just tension.

It was realization.

"She's not trying to take you down fast," Sophia said.

"She's breaking everything around you first."

Luciano didn't deny it.

Because that's exactly what was happening.

"And if she keeps going…" Sophia added.

"…people are going to turn."

That got his attention.

"Fear spreads," she continued.

"Loyalty breaks."

A pause.

"And suddenly… you're not fighting just her anymore."

Luciano stepped closer.

His gaze locked on hers.

"You're learning."

Her chest tightened slightly.

"I told you… I'm not blind."

The man in the room shifted slightly.

Uneasy.

Because the truth was—

She was right.

"What's the damage?" Luciano asked.

"Recoverable," the man replied. "But it's going to cost time. Money. Trust."

Luciano nodded once.

"Fix it."

The man left immediately.

Sophia exhaled slowly.

"This is bad."

Luciano looked at her.

"Yes."

"And it's only going to get worse."

"Yes."

Silence.

Then—

Sophia stepped closer.

Not away.

Closer.

"What are you going to do?" she asked.

Luciano's gaze darkened.

"End it."

Her heart skipped.

"That's not a plan."

"It's the result."

Sophia shook her head slightly.

"You can't just react to her," she said.

"You need to think ahead."

A pause.

"Like she is."

Luciano studied her.

Long.

Carefully.

Then—

"Tell me."

The words surprised her.

"What?"

"You see it," he said.

"So say it."

Sophia hesitated.

Because this—

This was different.

This wasn't just surviving anymore.

This was stepping into his world fully.

"She's isolating you," she said slowly.

"Breaking your support."

A pause.

"Making you vulnerable."

Luciano didn't interrupt.

Didn't correct her.

"And when you're weakened…" she continued.

"She'll strike again."

Silence.

Heavy.

Then—

"Yes."

Sophia's chest tightened.

"Then don't wait for it," she said.

Luciano's gaze sharpened.

"Find her first."

The words hung in the air.

Dangerous.

Decisive.

And for the first time—

Luciano didn't just see her as someone he had to protect.

He saw her as someone who could stand beside him.

Outside—

The war shifted again.

More dangerous.

More personal.

More destructive.

And somewhere in the city—

Isabella smiled.

Because everything was unfolding exactly the way she wanted.

"Let's see how long they last," she whispered.
