Chapter 30 - The Traitor Revealed

The mansion didn't feel safe anymore.

Not really.

Not after that meeting.

Not after the silence that followed.

Sophia could feel it everywhere.

In the way the guards looked at each other.

In the way conversations stopped when someone walked in.

In the way trust—

Slowly—

Started to crack.

She stood in Luciano's study again, her arms folded as she stared at the map on the table.

But this time—

Her focus wasn't on Isabella.

It was on them.

On the people inside the walls.

"You're thinking again."

Luciano's voice came from behind her.

Sophia didn't turn.

"Someone here is helping her," she said.

"Yes."

"And they're careful."

"Yes."

She finally turned.

Her eyes sharp.

Focused.

"Then we stop looking for fear," she said.

Luciano's gaze narrowed slightly.

"And look for control."

A pause.

Then—

"Explain."

Sophia stepped closer to the table, her finger tracing lightly over the marked locations.

"She's hitting specific targets," she said.

"Not random."

"Not emotional."

"Strategic."

Luciano didn't interrupt.

Didn't correct.

He just listened.

"That means whoever is feeding her information…" Sophia continued,

"…isn't panicking."

A pause.

"They're thinking."

Silence.

Then—

Luciano's gaze shifted slightly.

Something clicking.

"Not the weakest," he said.

"The smartest."

Sophia nodded.

"Yes."

A knock came at the door.

Sharp.

Controlled.

"Enter."

One of Luciano's most trusted men stepped in.

Calm.

Composed.

Familiar.

Sophia's eyes landed on him.

And something—

Something didn't feel right.

"Everything's been checked," he said.

"No irregularities."

Luciano studied him.

Quiet.

Still.

"Are you sure?" he asked.

The man nodded.

"Completely."

Silence.

Heavy.

Sophia stepped forward slightly.

Her heart picking up.

Her instincts sharp.

"Say that again," she said.

The man glanced at her.

Confused.

"What?"

"That everything is clean," she clarified.

A pause.

Then—

"Yes."

Sophia's chest tightened.

Because that was the problem.

"No," she said quietly.

Luciano's gaze snapped to her.

"No?" he repeated.

Sophia shook her head slowly.

"If everything was clean…"

She turned to the man.

"…then Isabella wouldn't be winning."

Silence.

The man's expression didn't change.

But his eyes—

For a split second—

Shifted.

And that was enough.

"There," Sophia said.

Luciano didn't hesitate.

His hand moved fast—

Grabbing the man by the collar—

Slamming him against the wall.

The room shifted instantly.

Danger.

Violence.

Truth.

"I gave you one chance," Luciano said quietly.

The man didn't struggle.

Didn't panic.

Instead—

He smiled.

And that—

That was worse.

"You're smarter than I thought," the man said, looking at Sophia.

Her stomach dropped.

"Why?" Luciano asked.

The question wasn't loud.

But it carried weight.

Everything stopped.

The man exhaled slowly.

Like he'd been waiting for this.

"Because you were losing focus," he said.

Luciano's grip tightened.

"On her," the man added, his gaze flicking to Sophia.

Silence.

"You built an empire on control," he continued.

"On precision."

"On fear."

A pause.

Then—

"You started making decisions based on emotion."

Sophia's chest tightened.

"And that makes you weak," the man finished.

Luciano didn't react.

Didn't argue.

Didn't deny.

"Isabella offered you something," he said.

The man nodded slightly.

"Clarity."

A bitter laugh almost escaped Sophia.

"Clarity?" she repeated.

"You betrayed him for that?"

The man's eyes met hers.

Cold.

Unapologetic.

"I didn't betray him," he said.

"I corrected him."

That made her stomach turn.

Luciano leaned in slightly.

His voice lower now.

More dangerous.

"You gave her access."

"Yes."

"You exposed my operations."

"Yes."

"You put her in danger."

A pause.

Then—

"Yes."

The word hit differently.

Because it wasn't about business anymore.

It was about her.

Sophia felt it.

That shift.

That line being crossed.

Luciano's grip tightened again.

"That wasn't part of the deal," the man added quickly.

Luciano's eyes darkened.

"You don't get to explain."

Silence.

For a moment—

No one moved.

No one spoke.

Then—

Luciano stepped back.

And just like that—

It was decided.

"Take him," he said.

Two men entered instantly.

Grabbing the traitor.

But as they dragged him away—

He didn't look at Luciano.

He looked at Sophia.

And smiled.

"You'll be his downfall," he said quietly.

The door shut behind him.

Silence filled the room again.

Heavy.

Unavoidable.

Sophia's heart pounded.

Her chest tight.

Her thoughts racing.

"That's not true," she said quickly.

Luciano didn't respond.

"That's not true," she repeated, stepping closer.

Still nothing.

"Say something," she whispered.

Finally—

His gaze lifted to hers.

Dark.

Unreadable.

"He's wrong," she said.

A pause.

Then—

"No."

Her breath caught.

"He's not."

The words hit hard.

Too hard.

Sophia shook her head.

"No—"

"You changed things," Luciano said.

Her chest tightened painfully.

"I didn't—"

"You did."

Silence.

"And I let you."

That hurt more than anything else.

Sophia took a step back.

Her heart racing.

Her emotions tangled.

"I didn't ask for that," she said.

"I know."

"Then don't blame me for it."

"I'm not."

Silence.

"Then what are you saying?" she asked.

A long pause followed.

Then—

Luciano stepped closer.

"You made me choose."

Her breath caught.

"And I did."

The words settled between them.

Heavy.

Final.

Sophia's chest tightened.

"And now…" he continued quietly,

"…there's no going back."
