Chapter 43: The New Normal

One Month Later

Life had settled into a rhythm. Not the frantic chaos of before, not the heavy silence of the week apart. Something new. Something stronger.

Jay woke each morning in Keifer's arms. They talked now—really talked—about fears, about feelings, about the small things and the big things. No more walls. No more secrets. Just them.

Keifer still went to therapy twice a week. Jay went with him sometimes. Sat in the waiting room. Held his hand on the drive home. Let him talk when he was ready, let him be silent when he wasn't.

She was learning to trust again. Not just him. Herself. Her own strength. Her own voice.

---

The Morning

Jay woke to sunlight and the sound of Keifer humming. He was in the bathroom, getting ready for work, and he was humming. Something soft. Something happy.

She smiled. Stretched. Walked to the bathroom doorway.

He was at the sink, shaving, his face half-covered in foam. He caught her reflection in the mirror. Smiled.

"Morning, Mrs. Watson."

She leaned against the doorframe. "Morning, Mr. Watson. You're cheerful today."

He rinsed the razor. "It's a good day. You're here. The sun is shining. Keiran hasn't burst through the door yet. It's a miracle."

She laughed. Moved behind him. Wrapped her arms around his waist. Pressed her cheek against his back.

"I love you," she murmured.

He covered her hands with his. "I love you too. More every day."

---

Breakfast

Downstairs, the kitchen was its usual chaos. Keiran was explaining something to Rex with great seriousness. Keigan was reading, occasionally correcting his brother's dinosaur facts. Percy was stealing bacon. Aries was pretending to be annoyed. Mamma was pouring juice. Pappa was behind his newspaper.

Jay sat beside Keifer. Their hands touching under the table. Always connected.

Keiran looked up. "Kuya Jay! Today is show and tell! I'm bringing Rex! He's going to tell everyone about dinosaurs!"

Keigan looked up. "Rex is a toy. He can't talk."

Keiran crossed his arms. "He can too. You just don't understand dinosaur language."

Keigan opened his mouth. Closed it. "I'll research it."

Keiran grinned. "See! Dinosaurs!"

Mamma set a plate in front of Jay. "Eat, darling. You have a busy day."

Jay looked at the plate. Eggs. Toast. Fruit. Mamma's love in every bite. "Thank you, Mamma."

Mamma kissed her forehead. "Always."

---

The Office

They drove to work together. Hand in hand. The city passing by. The morning sun warming the windows.

Keifer pulled into his parking spot. Cut the engine. Turned to her.

"Jay. I need to tell you something."

She turned. Her heart beating faster. "What is it?"

He took her hand. "I transferred Ethan. To the satellite office. In Singapore."

She stared at him. "You what?"

He squeezed her hand. "I should have done it months ago. After the first time. I was trying to be fair. Professional. I didn't want to be the jealous husband who fired people for looking at his wife." He paused. "But I should have listened to you. Should have trusted you. Should have protected you from the situation."

She shook her head. "Keifer, I didn't want you to—"

"I know. That's why I did it. Because you would never ask. But I should have done it anyway." He lifted her hand. Kissed her knuckles. "You're my wife. My partner. My everything. I'm not going to let anyone make you uncomfortable. Ever again."

She looked at him. Those storm-gray eyes. Soft. Determined. Loving.

"Okay," she whispered. "Okay."

He smiled. "Now. Let's go to work. We have a company to run."

---

The Office

The lobby was busy. Employees everywhere. Coffee in hand. Phones in hand. Rushing to start the day.

They saw Keifer and Jay. Saw their hands intertwined. Saw the way they looked at each other. Saw something stronger than before. Something healed.

Whispers followed them to the elevator. But they were different whispers. Softer. Kinder.

"—they went through so much—"

"—she's amazing—"

"—he loves her so much—"

"—look how happy they are—"

Jay leaned against Keifer in the elevator. "The whispers are different now."

He kissed her hair. "Good different?"

She nodded. "Good different."

The doors opened. Floor 99. Celeste was at her desk. She looked up. Smiled. Small. Genuine.

"Good morning, Mr. Watson. Good morning, Mrs. Watson. Coffee is ready. Your schedule is on your desks. Welcome back."

Jay smiled. "Thank you, Celeste."

Celeste nodded. "It's good to have you both here. Together."

---

The Desk

Jay's desk was exactly as she left it. Neat. Organized. Ready. And on her chair, a bouquet of flowers. White roses. Simple. Elegant. Like the ones he'd given her on their first day as an official couple.

She picked them up. Breathed in the scent. Smelled the note tucked inside.

For my wife. For every day. For always. I love you. —K

She looked at his office. He was at his desk. Watching her. Smiling.

She held up the flowers. Mouthing, I love you too.

His smile widened. He blew her a kiss. Cheesy. Perfect.

---

The Afternoon

The day passed. Meetings. Calls. Emails. But different now. Lighter. Easier.

At lunch, Keifer appeared at her desk. "Rooftop. Now. Non-negotiable."

She laughed. "Yes, sir."

They took the elevator to the roof. Their garden. Their secret place. The flowers were blooming. The city spread below them. The sky was blue.

He spread a blanket on the grass. Set out the lunch Mamma had packed. Sat beside her.

"I missed this," he said. "Just us. Just here."

She leaned against him. "Me too."

He kissed her forehead. "We should do this more often. Not just lunch. But this. Time for us. To talk. To breathe. To remember."

She looked up at him. "Remember what?"

He smiled. "Remember that we're a team. That we survived. That we're here. Together."

She kissed him. Soft. Sweet. Full of promise. "Together, Mr. Watson."

He kissed her back. "Together, Mrs. Watson."

---

The News

They were finishing lunch when Keifer's phone buzzed. He glanced at it. Frowned. Picked it up.

"It's Dr. Reyes."

Jay's heart stopped. "Your therapist? Is something wrong?"

He shook his head. Read the message. His face changed. Something flickering behind his eyes.

"Keifer? What is it?"

He looked at her. "He wants to see us. Together. Tonight. He says… he says he thinks I'm ready. To talk about the accident. Really talk. With you there."

She took his hand. "Are you ready?"

He was quiet for a moment. Looking at the city below. At the life they'd built. At the future they were creating.

"I think so," he said finally. "I want to be. For you. For us."

She squeezed his hand. "Then we'll go. Together."

---

The Session

Dr. Reyes's office was warm. Soft lights. Comfortable chairs. The smell of sandalwood.

Keifer sat beside Jay. His hand in hers. His leg bouncing. Nervous.

Dr. Reyes sat across from them. Kind eyes. Patient voice.

"Thank you for coming, Mrs. Watson. I know this isn't easy. For either of you."

Jay nodded. "I want to help. Whatever he needs."

Dr. Reyes looked at Keifer. "Where would you like to start?"

Keifer took a breath. "The accident. I haven't talked about it. Not really. Not with anyone."

Jay squeezed his hand. "You don't have to—"

He squeezed back. "I want to. I need to." He looked at Dr. Reyes. "I remember everything. The truck coming. The driver not seeing us. The sound. The glass. The pain." He stopped. Swallowed. "I remember thinking I was going to die."

Jay's eyes filled with tears. She didn't speak. Just held his hand.

"I remember thinking about Jay. About never seeing her again. About all the things I didn't say. All the things I didn't do." His voice cracked. "I was so scared. Not of dying. Of leaving her. Of her being alone. After everything she'd been through."

He turned to Jay. "When I woke up in the hospital, and you were there, holding my hand, I thought— I thought I'd been given a second chance. But I didn't know how to use it. I was still scared. Still angry. Still pushing you away. Because I didn't know how to be scared without being angry. I didn't know how to need you without feeling weak."

She touched his face. "Keifer—"

He leaned into her hand. "I'm learning. I'm learning to be scared without pushing. To need you without feeling weak. To love you without walls." He kissed her palm. "I'm learning, Jay. Every day. I'm learning."

She kissed him. Soft. Sweet. Healing. "That's all I ever wanted, Keifer. Just you. Just trying."

---

The Drive Home

They drove home in silence. Not heavy silence. Comfortable silence. His hand in hers. The city lights passing.

He pulled into the driveway. Cut the engine. Turned to her.

"Thank you. For coming. For listening. For staying."

She squeezed his hand. "Always. That's what I promised. In sickness and in health. In fear and in courage. Always."

He pulled her close. Held her against his chest. "I don't deserve you."

She kissed his jaw. "You deserve everything, Keifer Watson. You just have to let yourself believe it."

---

The House

They walked into the house. The chaos was winding down. Keiran was in pajamas, Rex in his hand, telling Mamma a long story about his day. Keigan was reading on the couch. Percy and Aries were arguing about something in the kitchen. Pappa was in his chair, newspaper up, pretending to read.

Keiran spotted them. "KUYA JAY! KUYA KAI! You're home! Mamma made cookies! I saved you some! Well, I ate some. But I saved SOME!"

Jay laughed. Picked him up. "You're a good brother, Keiran."

He beamed. "I know! Rex helped!"

Mamma appeared in the doorway. "Cookies in the kitchen. Milk in the fridge. Bedtime in thirty minutes."

Keiran gasped. "Thirty minutes? That's not enough time!"

Mamma raised an eyebrow. "You have thirty minutes. Use them wisely."

Keiran scrambled down. Ran to the kitchen. Rex bouncing in his hand. Keigan followed. Book still open. Still reading.

Percy appeared. Cookie in hand. "You two look better. Lighter."

Keifer smiled. "We're working on it."

Aries appeared behind Percy. "Good. Keep working. We're watching."

Keifer nodded. "I know. I wouldn't have it any other way."

---

The Night

They lay in bed together. The moonlight streaming through the windows. The shells from the Maldives glinting. The messages in bottles beside them. Keiran's latest dinosaur drawing on the wall.

Jay traced patterns on Keifer's chest. "You were brave today. Talking about the accident. Sharing your fear."

He kissed her hair. "You make me brave. You always have."

She looked up at him. Those storm-gray eyes. Soft. Loving. Hers.

"We're going to be okay, aren't we?"

He smiled. Pulled her closer. "We're going to be more than okay. We're going to be us. Stronger. Better. Together."

She kissed him. Soft. Sweet. Full of promise. "Together, Mr. Watson."

He kissed her back. "Together, Mrs. Watson."

---

The Dream

She dreamed that night. Not of hospitals. Not of messages. Not of fear.

She dreamed of a porch. A swing. Two old people, gray-haired and wrinkled, sitting together. Watching grandchildren play in the grass.

She dreamed of Keifer's hand in hers. Of his voice, still the same, still loving.

"Best life," he said.

She smiled. "Best life."

She woke with the sun. Keifer's arms around her. His heartbeat under her ear. His breath warm on her hair.

She closed her eyes. Let the dream linger. Let the future wait. Let this moment be enough.

It was. It always had been. It always would be.
