Chapter 44: The Beginning
Three Months Later
The morning sun painted the garden in shades of gold and pink. Jay stood at the window of their room, watching the light creep across the grass, the flowers, the bench where Keifer had proposed.
So much had changed. So much had healed. So much was still unfolding.
Behind her, Keifer stirred. She turned. He was watching her, those storm-gray eyes soft with sleep and love.
"You're up early," he murmured.
She crossed to the bed. Sat beside him. "Couldn't sleep. Too much thinking."
He pulled her down beside him. Curled around her. "Good thinking or bad thinking?"
She smiled against his chest. "Good thinking. The best kind."
---
The Secret
She'd known for two weeks. Had kept it inside, waiting for the right moment. Waiting for the fear to fade. Waiting for the joy to feel real.
The test was hidden in her drawer. Buried under the shells from the Maldives. Next to the messages in bottles. Beside Keiran's latest dinosaur drawing.
She'd stared at it every morning. Every night. Letting the truth sink in. Letting herself believe.
She was pregnant.
The words still felt impossible. After the cancer. After the treatments. After the doctors said it might never happen. After everything.
But there it was. Two lines. Clear. Unmistakable. A miracle.
---
The Morning
They went downstairs together. Hand in hand. The kitchen was chaos. Normal chaos. Beautiful chaos.
Keiran was explaining something to Rex. "And then the volcano erupted, and the dinosaurs had to run, but they were okay because they're strong."
Keigan looked up. "Volcanoes don't erupt without warning. There are seismic indicators. The dinosaurs would have known."
Keiran crossed his arms. "Maybe they knew. Maybe they ran BEFORE it erupted. You don't know."
Keigan opened his mouth. Closed it. "I'll research it."
Keiran grinned. "See! Dinosaurs!"
Mamma set a plate in front of Jay. Eggs. Toast. Fruit. The smell hit her stomach. It lurched.
She pressed her hand against her mouth. Mamma's eyes sharpened. "Jay? Are you feeling alright?"
Jay nodded quickly. "Fine. Just—just a little tired."
Mamma studied her face. Those knowing eyes. "Tired. Of course."
Jay forced a smile. Ate a piece of toast. Kept it down. Barely.
---
The Doctor
She went alone. Didn't tell Keifer. Didn't want to get his hopes up. Didn't want to face the fear together. Not yet.
Dr. Reyes—the same Dr. Reyes who'd helped her through cancer—smiled when she saw the test. "Have you told your husband?"
Jay shook her head. "I wanted to be sure. After everything. After the treatments. The doctors said—"
"I know what they said." Dr. Reyes's voice was gentle. "But your body is strong, Jay. You're healthy. There's no reason this can't be a healthy pregnancy."
Jay's hand moved to her stomach. Flat still. Empty. But not empty. Not anymore.
"The baby is healthy?"
Dr. Reyes nodded. "We'll do more tests, of course. Monitor you closely. But from what I can see—" She smiled. "You're having a baby, Jay. A healthy, growing baby."
Jay cried. Happy tears. The best kind.
---
The Garden
She found Keifer in the garden. Sitting on their bench. Watching the fountain. He looked up when she approached. Smiled.
"Everything okay? Mamma said you went out."
She sat beside him. Took his hand. "I went to the doctor."
His face tightened. "Are you sick? Is something wrong?"
She squeezed his hand. "No. Nothing's wrong. Everything's right."
She pulled the test from her pocket. Handed it to him.
He stared at it. His face went pale. Then flushed. His hands started shaking.
"Jay. Is this— are you—"
She nodded. Tears streaming down her face. "We're having a baby, Keifer."
He stared at her. At her stomach. At her face. Back at the test. "But the doctors said— after the cancer— they said it might not—"
She touched his face. "I know. But we're not statistics, Keifer. We're miracles. We've always been miracles."
He pulled her into his arms. Held her like she was the most precious thing in the world. Because she was.
"A baby," he whispered. "Our baby."
She held him back. "Our baby."
---
The Telling
They told the family that night. Gathered in the living room. Keiran on the floor with Rex. Keigan reading on the couch. Percy and Aries arguing about something. Mamma in her chair. Pappa behind his newspaper.
Keifer stood. Pulled Jay up beside him. His hand in hers. Both of them shaking.
"We have an announcement," Keifer said.
Percy looked up. "Are you renewing your vows? Because I have IDEAS."
Aries pulled him back. "Let them talk, Perce."
Keifer looked at Jay. She nodded. Smiled.
"We're having a baby."
The room went silent. Mamma's hand flew to her mouth. Pappa's newspaper dropped. Keigan's book slipped from his fingers. Percy's jaw fell open. Aries's eyes went wide.
Keiran looked up. "A baby? Like a real baby? Like a tiny human?"
Jay knelt down. "A real baby, Keiran. A tiny human."
Keiran stared at her stomach. "Where is it? Can I see it?"
She laughed. "It's too small right now. But in a few months, you'll be able to see it. Feel it. Meet it."
Keiran's face broke into a grin. "I'M GOING TO BE A KUYA! I'M GOING TO BE THE BEST KUYA! REX IS GOING TO TEACH IT DINOSAURS!"
Mamma stood. Crossed to them. Took Jay's face in her hands. "A baby. My baby is having a baby."
Jay nodded. Tears streaming. "A baby, Mamma."
Mamma pulled her into her arms. Held her tight. "A miracle. Our miracle."
---
The Chaos
Percy whooped. Danced around the room. "I'M GOING TO BE AN UNCLE! THE BEST UNCLE! I'M GOING TO TEACH IT HOW TO BE COOL!"
Aries pulled him back. "You're not teaching anyone anything."
Percy gasped. "I'M THE COOLEST UNCLE!"
Aries looked at Jay. "I'm going to teach it how to read. How to think. How to be calm."
Percy crossed his arms. "BORING!"
Keigan stood. Walked to Jay. Looked at her stomach. Serious. "I'm going to teach it science. Volcanoes. Evolution. The stars."
Jay pulled him into a hug. "You're going to be the best teacher, Koya."
He hugged her back. Quick. Fierce. "I know."
Pappa stood. Walked to Keifer. Clapped him on the shoulder. "A father. My son, a father."
Keifer smiled. "I'm scared, Pappa."
Pappa nodded. "Good. That's how it should be. The fear means you understand what matters."
Keifer looked at Jay. At her stomach. At their future. "I understand."
---
The Night
They lay in bed. The moonlight streaming through the windows. The shells from the Maldives on her nightstand. The messages in bottles beside them. Keiran's latest drawing—a dinosaur holding a baby dinosaur—taped to the wall.
Keifer's hand rested on her stomach. Flat. But not empty.
"Can you feel anything?" he whispered.
She covered his hand with hers. "Not yet. It's too small. But it's there. Growing."
He pressed closer. Kissed her stomach. "Hello in there. I'm your father. I'm going to be the best father I can be. I'm going to teach you things. Protect you. Love you." His voice cracked. "I'm going to love you forever."
Jay's eyes filled with tears. "You're going to be a wonderful father, Keifer."
He looked up at her. Those storm-gray eyes wet. "How do you know?"
She touched his face. "Because you already love it. Because you already love me. Because you've spent your whole life learning how to love. And now you get to teach someone else."
He kissed her. Soft. Sweet. Full of promise. "I love you, Jay Watson."
She kissed him back. "I love you too, Keifer Watson. Now. Let's get some sleep. We have a baby to grow."
---
The Dream
She dreamed again. The porch. The swing. Two old people, gray-haired and wrinkled. But this time, there was a child in her lap. A little girl. Or a little boy. The face was blurry. But the love was clear.
Keifer's hand in hers. His voice, still the same. "A baby."
She smiled. "Our baby."
The child laughed. Reached for her face. She held it close. Let the love fill her.
She woke with the sun. Keifer's arms around her. His hand on her stomach. His heart beating under her ear.
She closed her eyes. Let the dream linger. Let the future come. Let this moment be enough.
It was. It always had been. It always would be.
---
The Morning
They walked downstairs hand in hand. The kitchen was chaos. Normal chaos. Beautiful chaos.
Keiran was explaining something to Rex. "And the baby is going to be the best baby. Because it's OUR baby. And we're the best family."
Keigan looked up. "Babies don't have personalities at birth. They develop them over time."
Keiran crossed his arms. "OUR baby is going to have the best personality. Because we're going to teach it."
Keigan considered. "That's... actually accurate. Environment does play a role in personality development."
Keiran beamed. "SEE! I'M A SCIENTIST!"
Mamma set a plate in front of Jay. Eggs. Toast. Fruit. The smell didn't bother her today. She ate. Grateful. Happy.
Percy slid into the seat beside her. "So. Names. I have ideas."
Aries pulled him back. "Let them decide, Perce. It's their baby."
Percy waved him off. "I'm just suggesting! Boy names. Girl names. Dinosaur names."
Keigan looked up. "You can't name a child after a dinosaur."
Percy grinned. "You can name a child ANYTHING. That's the beauty of parenting."
Jay laughed. Looked at Keifer. "What do you think, Mr. Watson? Any name ideas?"
He kissed her forehead. "I think we have time. I think we should enjoy this. I think—" He looked around the kitchen. At his family. His chaos. His home. "I think this is the beginning of something beautiful."
She leaned against him. "The beginning, Mr. Watson. Of everything."
He held her close. "Everything, Mrs. Watson. Together."
---
The Future
Months stretched ahead. Doctor visits. Nursery plans. Name debates. Late-night cravings. Early-morning fears.
But none of it mattered. Not really. What mattered was this: Keifer's hand on her stomach. His voice in her ear. His heart beating with hers.
What mattered was Keiran drawing pictures for the baby. Keigan researching baby development. Percy planning the coolest uncle activities. Aries preparing his calm, steady presence. Mamma knitting tiny blankets. Pappa building a crib.
What mattered was love. The love they'd found. The love they'd fought for. The love they'd healed.
The love that was growing inside her. Small now. But strong. So strong.
