Chapter 33 - The Space Between Us

That evening didn't return to normal.

Not completely.

Something had shifted.

Not broken.

But moved—just enough to be noticed.

Noah stayed closer to Emily after that.

Not in fear.

But in quiet reassurance.

He held onto her hand longer.

Sat beside her instead of across the room.

Leaned into her without saying why.

Emily didn't question it.

She just responded.

Softly.

Gently.

Present.

Daniel noticed everything.

Of course he did.

But he didn't interrupt it.

Didn't try to step in.

Didn't try to prove anything.

He simply… gave them space.

Later that night—

Noah sat between them on the couch, flipping through one of his drawing books.

"Can I show you something?" he asked.

Emily smiled.

"Always."

Noah turned to a page slowly.

"This one is new."

The drawing showed three figures again.

But this time—

They weren't standing close together.

There was space between them.

Not too much.

But enough to be seen.

Emily's smile faded slightly.

Daniel leaned forward.

"What's this one about?" he asked gently.

Noah looked at the drawing.

Then said—

"This is today."

Silence.

Emily felt something tighten in her chest.

"What do you mean?" she asked softly.

Noah pointed at each figure.

"This is you," he said, pointing to Emily.

"And this is you," pointing to Daniel.

"And this is me."

Daniel nodded slowly.

"And the space?"

Noah hesitated.

Then said—

"It's when things feel weird."

The word landed quietly.

But deeply.

Emily swallowed.

"Weird how?"

Noah shrugged slightly.

"Like… when you both are not sad… but not happy either."

Daniel looked down briefly.

Then back at Noah.

"That makes sense."

Emily reached out and gently touched Noah's hair.

"Did we make you feel that way today?"

Noah didn't answer immediately.

Then nodded.

"A little."

Emily closed her eyes for a second.

That honesty—

It hurt.

But it mattered.

"I'm sorry," she whispered.

Noah looked up quickly.

"It's okay," he said.

Then added—

"I don't want you to be sorry. I just want it to not feel weird."

Daniel let out a soft breath.

"Fair enough."

Noah smiled slightly.

Then flipped the page.

The next drawing—

Was different.

This time—

The three figures were closer again.

Not perfectly.

Not tightly.

But closer.

"And this?" Daniel asked.

Noah smiled.

"This is tomorrow."

Emily looked at him.

"Tomorrow?"

Noah nodded.

"Because tomorrow can be better."

Daniel couldn't help but smile.

"You're pretty wise, you know that?"

Noah grinned.

"I know."

For a moment—

The heaviness lifted.

Emily looked at Daniel.

Their eyes met briefly.

No words.

But understanding.

Tomorrow.

Later that night—

Noah fell asleep quickly again.

This time more peacefully.

Emily stepped out of his room quietly.

Closing the door halfway.

Daniel was standing near the window.

Looking outside.

She walked toward him slowly.

"He's right," she said.

Daniel didn't turn.

"About what?"

"About the space," Emily replied.

Daniel nodded slightly.

"Yeah."

A pause.

Then Emily added—

"I think we created it."

Daniel turned now.

"Maybe."

Emily looked at him.

"No… not maybe."

Her voice wasn't blaming.

It was honest.

"We're trying so hard to not make mistakes…" she said,

"That we're forgetting to just be normal."

Daniel gave a small, thoughtful smile.

"I don't even remember what normal feels like."

Emily almost smiled.

"Me neither."

Silence again.

But softer this time.

Then Daniel said—

"So what do we do?"

Emily thought for a moment.

Then said—

"We stop overthinking every moment."

Daniel raised an eyebrow.

"That sounds impossible."

Emily let out a quiet laugh.

"Probably."

Then she looked at him.

"But we can try."

Daniel nodded slowly.

"Okay."

They stood there for a moment.

Not rushing.

Not forcing anything.

Then Emily said something unexpected—

"Stay for dinner tomorrow."

Daniel blinked slightly.

"I thought I already was."

Emily shook her head.

"No… I mean really stay."

Daniel understood.

Not as a guest.

Not as someone visiting.

But as someone who belongs.

His expression softened.

"I'd like that."

Emily nodded.

"Good."

And just like that—

A small decision was made.

Nothing big.

Nothing dramatic.

But something real.

Because sometimes—

Closing the distance between people…

Doesn't happen all at once.

It happens slowly.

In small steps.

In quiet choices.

Like choosing to stay.

Like choosing to try again.

Like choosing tomorrow…

Even after a difficult today.
