Chapter 10 - Shadows of the Past

The sky slowly turned orange as the sun began to set behind the tall buildings of the town. The park was quieter now. Most people had already gone home, leaving only the soft sound of wind and rustling leaves.

Emily and Daniel were still sitting on the bench.

Seven years apart… yet somehow it felt like no time had passed at all.

Daniel leaned back slightly and looked at the sky.

"So… why did you really come back?" he asked calmly.

Emily stayed silent for a moment.

She knew this question would come.

"I came back because of my mother," she finally said. "She's been sick for a while. I wanted to stay with her."

Daniel nodded slowly.

"I'm sorry… I didn't know."

Emily forced a small smile.

"It's okay. You weren't supposed to know."

For a few seconds neither of them spoke.

Then Daniel looked at her again.

"But I feel like that's not the only reason," he said quietly.

Emily looked down at her hands.

Daniel still knew her too well.

"There was… another reason," she admitted.

Daniel waited.

"I never got the chance to say goodbye properly," Emily said softly.

The words hung heavily in the air.

Daniel's expression changed.

"You left without explaining anything," he said. His voice wasn't angry… just hurt.

"I know," Emily replied. "And I regret that every single day."

A long silence followed.

The wind grew colder as evening slowly settled over the town.

Finally Daniel stood up and walked a few steps away, looking toward the lake in the distance.

"You know," he said quietly, "for years I kept wondering what I did wrong."

Emily's heart tightened.

"You didn't do anything wrong," she said quickly.

Daniel turned around.

"Then why did you leave?"

Emily's eyes filled with emotion.

"There were things happening in my life… things I didn't know how to handle," she said. "I thought leaving would make things easier for everyone."

Daniel shook his head slightly.

"Running away never makes things easier."

Emily knew he was right.

"I know that now," she whispered.

For a moment Daniel just looked at her.

Then he sighed and sat down again.

"Well… you're here now," he said. "And I guess that's something."

Emily nodded slowly.

"Yes… I'm here now."

The night lights of the town began to glow around them.

Neither of them knew what would happen next.

But one thing was certain.

The past they had tried to escape was finally catching up with them.

And the truth they had avoided for years was slowly beginning to surface.

Their story wasn't over.

In fact… it might have just begun again.
