Chapter 12 - The Truth Between Them

Chapter 12: The Truth Between Them

The cold night air wrapped around the bridge as Emily stood frozen.

Daniel's words echoed in her mind.

"You still haven't told me everything."

He was right.

There was still something she hadn't said… something she had kept hidden for seven long years.

Daniel stepped closer to her.

"Emily," he said gently, "you don't have to tell me if you're not ready."

Emily shook her head.

"No… I think it's time."

Her voice trembled slightly.

Daniel waited quietly.

Emily took a deep breath and looked out at the dark river.

"The scholarship wasn't the only thing that happened back then," she said.

Daniel frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Emily's fingers tightened around the railing.

"The night before I left… my father lost his job," she continued slowly. "Our family was already struggling financially."

Daniel listened carefully.

"My mother was sick even back then," Emily added. "The medical bills kept growing."

Daniel's expression softened.

"I didn't know…"

Emily smiled sadly.

"Not many people did."

She looked up at the night sky.

"The scholarship paid for everything—my studies, my housing, even part of my family's expenses."

Daniel understood now.

"So you felt like you had no choice."

Emily nodded.

"Yes."

"But that still doesn't explain why you completely cut contact," Daniel said.

Emily hesitated.

Her silence made Daniel's heart beat faster.

"Emily… what happened after you left?"

For a moment she didn't answer.

Then she finally spoke.

"The first year was the hardest," she said quietly. "I was studying, working part-time, sending money home…"

Daniel stayed silent.

Emily's voice became softer.

"And then… something happened."

Daniel's chest tightened.

"What?"

Emily slowly turned toward him.

Her eyes were filled with emotions he couldn't quite understand.

"I almost came back," she said.

Daniel looked confused.

"What stopped you?"

Emily's lips parted slightly, but the words seemed difficult to say.

Before she could answer, a sudden loud noise echoed from the road nearby—a motorcycle speeding past.

The moment broke.

Emily looked down again.

"I'll tell you the rest… another time," she whispered.

Daniel sighed.

"You always leave the most important part unfinished."

Emily gave a small, guilty smile.

"I know."

They stood there quietly under the dim streetlights.

But Daniel could feel it.

The real truth was getting closer.

And whatever Emily was still hiding…

…was about to change both of their lives.
