Chapter 57 - Chapter 55 — Into the Mountain Wilds

Morning clouds rolled slowly across the high cliffs surrounding Kumogakure.

Far above the village, narrow stone paths twisted into the academy's outer training regions.

These mountains were older than the village itself.

Dense forest.

Steep ravines.

Hidden streams cutting through stone.

Today—

They would become the classroom.

Departure

Dozens of academy students gathered near the outer gates.

Each carried a compact supply pack.

Inside:

A knife.

Flint.

Rations.

Basic bandages.

Nothing more.

Instructor Takeshi Aran stood before them, arms folded.

"This exercise will last three days."

Groans spread immediately.

He ignored them.

"You will operate in teams of three."

His gaze shifted toward the forest.

"Your objective is simple."

"Survive."

The Rules

Takeshi continued without pause.

"You must secure water."

"Build shelter."

"Acquire food."

"And avoid detection by instructor patrol units."

Students stiffened.

Daigo raised a hand.

"You mean like the stealth test?"

Takeshi nodded.

"Yes."

Then his voice lowered slightly.

"But this time…"

"…the terrain will not help you."

Silence followed.

Because everyone understood—

This wasn't controlled anymore.

Team Assignments

Teams formed quickly.

Raizen found himself with:

Akari Mizuta.

Daigo Mizuta.

Daigo grinned.

"Perfect team."

Akari sighed.

"This is going to be exhausting."

Raizen adjusted his pack calmly.

Inside his mind, Astra activated.

"New environment detected."

"Survival variables: active."

Raizen smirked slightly.

Good.

Entering the Forest

The teams moved out.

The forest swallowed them quickly.

Light faded beneath the canopy.

Cool air replaced the warmth of the open paths.

Roots twisted underfoot.

Streams cut through narrow terrain.

Every step required attention.

Raizen moved at the front.

Akari behind him.

Daigo carrying most of the heavier tools.

Astra's Analysis

Inside Raizen's mind, Astra processed continuously.

"Terrain scan in progress."

Raizen stepped over a fallen branch.

Anything useful?

"Water source detected: 240 meters west."

Raizen nodded.

"We go west."

Akari glanced at him.

"How do you know?"

Raizen pointed toward the slope.

"Water flows downhill."

Daigo shrugged.

"Good enough."

Astra updated internally:

"Decision masking: effective."

Camp Selection

After thirty minutes, they reached a narrow stream.

Clear water.

Steady flow.

Nearby—

A small clearing.

Elevated slightly above the stream.

Natural visibility.

Akari scanned the area.

"This works."

Raizen nodded.

"Defensible. Good sightlines."

Daigo dropped his pack.

"So what now?"

Raizen answered:

"We build."

Practical Survival

They moved efficiently.

Branches gathered.

Vines cut.

Leaves layered.

Raizen cut support beams.

Daigo secured the frame.

Akari sealed gaps with layered foliage.

Within an hour—

A lean-to shelter stood.

Simple.

Functional.

Akari stepped back.

"Not bad."

Daigo grinned.

"We're alive."

Raizen nodded.

"Day one complete."

Hidden Training

Later, the team split briefly.

Daigo moved toward the stream.

Akari searched for edible plants.

Raizen remained at camp.

He sat near the shelter.

Still.

Calm.

Then—

His fingers moved.

Ram.

Snake.

Tiger.

Again.

Again.

Again.

From a distance—

Rest.

In reality—

Training.

Inside his mind, Astra tracked:

"Seal repetition count increasing."

"Execution stability improving under fatigue conditions."

Raizen exhaled slowly.

Training never stopped.

A Nearby Presence

As the light began to fade, Astra spoke.

"Movement detected."

Raizen's eyes opened slightly.

"Location?"

"North ridge. Elevated position."

Raizen rose quietly.

Climbed a nearby rock outcrop.

From the top—

He saw movement.

Another team.

Then—

Rei Kisaragi.

The stealth specialist.

Rei paused.

His gaze shifted across the forest.

For a brief moment—

Their eyes aligned.

Distance.

Shadows.

Recognition.

Then Rei moved again.

Gone into the trees.

Raizen smirked faintly.

Two predators.

Mapping the same territory.

Nightfall

Darkness settled over the mountain forest.

The team gathered near a controlled fire.

Small.

Low smoke.

Akari roasted fish over the flame.

Daigo leaned against a tree.

"This is actually kinda fun."

Akari pointed at him.

"Give it a day."

Raizen sat slightly apart.

Watching.

Listening.

The forest wasn't silent.

It breathed.

Wind through leaves.

Water over stone.

Distant movement.

Inside his mind, Astra spoke:

"Instructor patrol probability increasing after nightfall."

Raizen's eyes narrowed slightly.

Good.

That meant—

The real test was beginning.

Storm Ahead

Far above the trees, clouds gathered.

Thunder rolled faintly across the mountains.

The air shifted.

Heavier.

Unpredictable.

Raizen looked toward the dark forest.

Survival.

Stealth.

Adaptation.

This wasn't a lesson anymore.

It was a system under pressure.

And tomorrow—

They would be hunted.
