Chapter 56 - Chapter 54 — Shadows Lesson

The academy courtyard of Kumogakure was unusually quiet that evening.

Students gathered beneath dim lanterns lining the stone pathways. Night training usually meant one thing.

Something difficult.

Instructor Takeshi Aran stood at the front alongside several other instructors. His arms were folded, his expression calm.

"Tonight's lesson is infiltration."

Murmurs spread through the group.

Daigo leaned toward Akari. "That sounds fun."

Akari shook her head. "That means it's going to be terrible."

The Objective

Takeshi gestured toward a building across the training field.

A two-story stone structure.

The academy storage facility.

Weapons. Scrolls. Equipment.

Lantern light flickered faintly through its windows.

"Inside that building," Takeshi said, "is a sealed scroll."

"Your goal is to retrieve it."

Whispers spread immediately.

Then—

"You must do so without being detected."

Silence followed.

Because surrounding the building—

Instructors were already in position.

Watching.

Shinobi Principle

Takeshi walked slowly in front of the students.

"A shinobi who relies only on strength is predictable."

He stopped.

"A shinobi who understands shadows…"

"…is dangerous."

He pointed toward the building.

"Stealth is not silence."

"It is awareness."

"Timing."

"Positioning."

"Control."

Raizen listened closely.

Inside his mind, Astra recorded.

"Stealth doctrine logged."

The Rules

Takeshi raised his hand.

"Three students per attempt."

"If you are detected—"

He tapped the ground lightly.

"You fail."

"If you retrieve the scroll—"

A brief pause.

"You pass."

Daigo whispered, "That's impossible."

Akari replied, "That's the point."

First Attempts

The first group moved.

One student tried sprinting between shadows.

An instructor turned instantly.

"Detected."

Another attempted the outer wall.

A second instructor appeared above him.

"Detected."

The third froze mid-path.

A lantern swept across him.

"Detected."

Groans spread through the courtyard.

Observation

Raizen didn't move.

He stayed at the back.

Watching.

Studying.

Inside his mind, Astra spoke:

"Pattern analysis in progress."

Raizen tracked everything.

Instructor routes.

Lantern sweeps.

Blind spots.

Timing gaps.

"Movement cycles identified," Astra confirmed.

Raizen folded his arms slightly.

So it's not speed.

It's rhythm.

A New Rival

The next group was called.

One student stepped forward.

Tall.

Narrow eyes.

Dark clothing that blended into the night.

Akari frowned. "Who is that?"

Daigo answered, "New transfer. Rei Kisaragi."

The boy moved.

Slow.

Controlled.

Every step placed deliberately.

He slipped between two shadows.

An instructor turned—

Then looked away.

Didn't see him.

The crowd leaned forward.

Rei reached the wall.

Climbed.

Entered through the window.

Moments later—

He emerged holding the scroll.

Takeshi nodded.

"Success."

Surprise rippled through the students.

A Specialist

Rei dropped to the ground silently.

No celebration.

No reaction.

Just stillness.

Raizen watched him carefully.

Inside his mind, Astra analyzed:

"Stealth efficiency: extremely high."

Raizen nodded slightly.

A specialist.

Like Taro with weapons.

Except this one mastered shadows.

Raizen's Turn

"Next group."

Takeshi's gaze shifted.

"Raizen Tenrai."

Daigo grinned. "There it is."

Akari crossed her arms. "Let's see."

Raizen stepped forward.

Two other students joined him.

They crouched at the starting point.

Lanterns flickered.

Instructors resumed their patrol.

Inside his mind, Astra spoke:

"Optimal route available."

Raizen exhaled.

Show me.

A path formed.

Shadow to shadow.

Timing windows.

Movement intervals.

Silent Steps

Raizen didn't run.

He walked.

Controlled.

Measured.

Each step placed with intent.

The wind masked minor sound.

One teammate moved too early.

An instructor turned.

"Detected."

Raizen didn't look.

Didn't hesitate.

"Lantern sweep in three seconds," Astra counted.

Raizen slipped behind a crate.

Light washed over the ground—

Where he had just been.

Then passed.

He moved again.

Closer.

Closer.

The wall rose ahead.

He climbed.

Quick.

Quiet.

Reached the window.

Inside—

The scroll rested on a pedestal.

Raizen entered.

Retrieved it.

Exited.

Result

He landed silently.

Takeshi nodded.

"Success."

The courtyard went quiet.

Then—

Murmurs.

Akari smiled faintly.

Daigo laughed.

"Of course he passed."

Across the courtyard—

Rei Kisaragi watched him.

Carefully.

Not impressed.

Not dismissive.

Evaluating.

Two specialists.

Recognizing each other.

System Growth

Inside Raizen's mind, Astra spoke:

"Stealth integration successful."

"Adaptive Training System: expanded."

Raizen's eyes shifted slightly.

Another domain added.

Another layer.

A New Challenge

As students began returning to the dormitories, Takeshi spoke once more.

"This was only the first exercise."

Groans echoed.

He ignored them.

"Next week, you will apply these skills…"

He pointed toward the distant mountain forests.

"…during the Mountain Survival Trial."

Silence.

Even Raizen paused.

Because that meant—

Real terrain.

Real unpredictability.

No controlled environment.

No safety net.

The wind shifted across Kumogakure.

And the next phase of their training had already begun.
