Chapter 5 - Chapter 4 — The Course of the Storm

The Storm Run Festival

The academy campus felt different the morning of the festival.

Excitement buzzed through the dormitories before sunrise.

Students hurried through the halls, some already wearing light training gear while others nervously stretched in the courtyard.

From the dormitory window, Raizen watched the sky.

Heavy clouds rolled between the mountains.

Thunder echoed softly through the valley.

Perfect weather for Kumogakure.

Behind him, Daigo was already awake and pacing the room.

"This is it."

Raizen glanced back.

"It's a race."

"It's THE race."

Daigo pointed dramatically toward the mountains outside.

"They built the course on the cliff paths!"

Ren, their quiet roommate, finished tying his wrist wraps.

"The course changes every year."

Daigo blinked.

"You know that already?"

Ren nodded calmly.

"My older brother ran it."

Raizen listened carefully.

Information mattered.

Astra spoke quietly inside his mind.

"Environmental analysis suggests uneven terrain, elevation shifts, and unstable footing along mountain paths."

Raizen smirked.

"In other words… don't fall off the mountain."

"Correct."

The Gathering Field

Students gathered on a massive training field near the edge of the academy plateau.

Beyond the field, the Storm Run course stretched into the surrounding mountains.

Narrow paths carved into cliff faces.

Suspended rope bridges.

Steep stone staircases.

Wooden posts driven into rocky slopes for balance drills.

Instructor Tetsuya stood near the starting line with several other academy instructors.

"This event tests more than speed," he announced.

"Shinobi must adapt to difficult terrain and changing conditions."

He gestured toward the distant cliffs.

"You will face obstacles, shifting routes, and unexpected challenges."

The wind carried a distant rumble of thunder.

"First group to reach the finish wins."

Daigo cracked his knuckles.

"Let's go."

The Race Begins

A horn echoed across the mountains.

Students surged forward.

The first section of the course ran through a forest trail beneath the academy cliffs.

Immediately chaos broke out.

Some students sprinted recklessly ahead.

Others hesitated at the narrow turns.

Raizen ran at a steady pace.

Not too fast.

Not too slow.

Balance.

Breathing.

Observation.

Astra tracked the terrain.

"Recommended path: left ridge ahead. Fewer runners."

Raizen veered slightly off the main path.

Daigo noticed.

"Hey! Wait up!"

The Cliff Path

The course soon reached its most dangerous section.

A narrow trail carved directly into the mountain.

Wind whipped across the path as clouds drifted past the cliffs.

Some students froze when they saw the drop.

Others tried to rush through and nearly slipped.

Raizen slowed.

His training from childhood surfaced instinctively.

Balance drills on the Mizunari estate posts.

Chakra flow through his feet.

Weight distribution.

He stepped lightly across the uneven stone path.

Daigo followed carefully behind him.

"You've done this before."

"Something like that."

Ahead of them, a rope bridge swayed violently in the wind.

Several students hesitated.

Raizen simply stepped onto the bridge.

The Moment That Changes Everything

The bridge rocked sharply beneath his feet.

Below them stretched a dizzying drop into the valley.

Most students crossed slowly.

Carefully.

But Raizen adjusted his footing instinctively.

His movements became smooth.

Almost effortless.

Step.

Balance.

Shift.

Before anyone realized what happened…

He crossed the entire bridge in seconds.

Daigo stopped halfway across.

"…What?"

Behind them, several instructors observing from the cliffs exchanged glances.

Instructor Tetsuya folded his arms.

"That kid…"

The Final Climb

The last section of the race was brutal.

A steep stone staircase carved into the mountainside.

Students struggled to climb after the long run.

Some collapsed on the steps.

Daigo gasped for air beside Raizen.

"How are you still moving?"

Raizen shrugged slightly.

"Pacing."

Astra added quietly.

"Host cardiovascular efficiency above class average."

"Please stop saying things like that."

The Finish Line

The final ridge appeared above them.

A wooden gate marked the end of the course.

A few students had already finished.

But most were still climbing.

Raizen crossed the finish line calmly.

Not first.

But near the top.

Daigo collapsed beside him.

"I'm… never… doing that again."

Raizen sat on the grass overlooking the mountains.

The view stretched across miles of jagged cliffs and drifting clouds.

Far below, Kumogakure's towers glimmered between the peaks.

Students continued arriving at the finish line.

Some cheering.

Some exhausted.

Some proud simply to finish.

Instructor Tetsuya approached quietly.

He stopped beside Raizen.

"You've done balance training before."

Raizen looked up.

"Yes, sir."

Tetsuya studied him for a moment.

Then nodded once.

"Good."

He walked away.

Inside his mind Astra spoke.

"Instructor observation logged."

Raizen leaned back in the grass.

"Here we go…"

Seeds of Rivalry

Later that evening, rumors spread quickly through the dormitory halls.

"Did you see that silver-haired kid on the rope bridge?"

"He crossed it like it was flat ground."

"Who is he?"

Across the dorm building, another student listened quietly from the hallway shadows.

One of the future Seven Stars.

Watching.

Evaluating.

The academy year had only just begun.

But the first sparks of rivalry were already forming.

Quiet Night

That night the dormitory finally fell silent.

Students slept heavily after the exhausting race.

Raizen stood alone on the dorm rooftop again.

The storm clouds above Kumogakure slowly drifted across the moon.

Inside his mind Astra asked:

"Host satisfaction level?"

Raizen smiled faintly.

"Not bad for the first week."

Lightning flashed across the mountains.

And somewhere within the academy…

Several instructors had already begun remembering his name.

Raizen.
