The Phantom Step — Part II
The arena of Kumogakure's academy was quieter now.
Not silent.
But different.
The early cheers had faded into something sharper.
Attention.
Everyone in the stands understood now.
This wasn't just another tournament match.
This was a fight between two students who were thinking several moves ahead.
Ren Sōma rolled his shoulders as he looked back toward Raizen.
"You caught my wrist earlier," he said.
"First person today."
Raizen didn't respond.
His posture remained calm.
Centered.
Ren chuckled.
"Alright then."
He crouched lower.
"This time I won't slow down."
The Phantom Fully Unleashed
Ren exploded forward.
The arena floor cracked lightly beneath his sandals as he accelerated.
His body blurred.
Students in the stands gasped.
Even trained eyes struggled to follow him.
Left.
Right.
Behind.
Ren struck with a sweeping kick aimed at Raizen's knee.
Raizen stepped back just in time.
But Ren was already moving again.
Palm strike.
Elbow.
A spinning heel kick.
Raizen blocked the first.
Slipped past the second.
But the third forced him to slide several feet across the arena floor.
Ren landed smoothly.
His grin widened.
"There it is."
He pointed.
"You're starting to feel it."
Raizen rolled his shoulder once.
Not pain.
Pressure.
Ren's attacks weren't powerful.
But they were constant.
The kind of speed that slowly chipped away at defenses.
Raizen exhaled slowly.
Then he changed his stance again.
This time Ren noticed immediately.
"You did it again," Ren said.
Raizen nodded.
"Yes."
The Rhythm Break
Ren attacked again.
But this time something changed.
As he closed the distance—
Raizen moved before Ren struck.
He stepped forward.
Not away.
Forward.
Ren's first strike missed completely.
Raizen's palm struck Ren's shoulder.
Not hard.
But precise.
Ren staggered back two steps in surprise.
The crowd reacted instantly.
"He hit him!"
Ren blinked.
Then laughed.
"Oh I get it now."
Raizen waited quietly.
Ren rolled his neck.
"You're not chasing me."
"No."
"You're waiting for me to step where you want."
Raizen didn't deny it.
Ren grinned wider.
"Alright then."
He crouched again.
"But what if I stop being predictable?"
The Phantom Changes Strategy
This time Ren didn't rush.
He walked slowly to the side.
Circling.
Studying.
Raizen mirrored the movement carefully.
Neither attacked.
Ten seconds passed.
Then Ren moved again.
But instead of attacking high—
He dropped low.
Sliding kick.
Raizen jumped back.
Ren instantly followed with a rising elbow strike.
Raizen twisted sideways to block it.
But Ren's real attack came from his other hand.
A palm thrust toward Raizen's chest.
Raizen barely deflected it.
Ren flipped backward and landed safely.
The arena erupted again.
"That combo was crazy!"
Ren exhaled slowly.
"Okay."
He pointed at Raizen again.
"You're fun to fight."
Raizen answered calmly.
"You too."
The Speed Wall
Ren cracked his knuckles.
"Let's see if you can handle this then."
Chakra surged faintly around his legs.
The next movement was even faster.
Ren shot forward like a lightning bolt.
Three attacks.
Four.
Five.
The strikes came from every angle.
Raizen blocked the first.
Slipped past the second.
Caught the third.
But the fourth grazed his ribs.
The fifth forced him back again.
Ren landed lightly.
Sweat now ran down his face.
But his smile was wide.
"You're keeping up."
Raizen's breathing remained steady.
But inside his mind—
Something else was happening.
He was studying the movement.
Not just the speed.
The pattern.
The moment Ren pushed off the ground.
The shift in his hips.
The tiny pause before each directional change.
Raizen's eyes sharpened.
The Turning Point
Ren attacked again.
But this time—
Raizen stepped exactly where Ren planned to land.
Ren's eyes widened.
Raizen's hand closed around his sleeve.
Momentum shifted instantly.
Ren was thrown forward.
Not violently.
Just enough.
Raizen swept his leg.
Ren hit the ground hard.
The arena exploded with noise.
Ren rolled immediately and sprang back to his feet.
His grin was bigger than ever.
"That was perfect."
He wiped sweat from his chin.
"You figured it out."
Raizen relaxed slightly.
"Yes."
Ren nodded slowly.
"Yeah."
He looked toward the stands briefly.
Toward the student with the wooden sword.
Then back at Raizen.
"Guess I should finish this properly."
He lowered his stance again.
But this time…
There was no grin.
Only focus.
The next exchange would decide the match.
Watching From the Stands
In the upper rows of the arena, Akari Mizuta leaned forward.
"Ren's serious now."
Beside her, Daigo Mizuta nodded.
"He's going all out."
Further up the stands, the swordsman watching the fight rested his hand on the hilt of his wooden blade.
Tetsuo Kurogane
His eyes never left Raizen.
The Final Movement
Ren inhaled.
Raizen adjusted his stance.
Instructor Hoshin watched carefully.
The arena fell quiet.
Then—
Both fighters moved.
