Chapter 28 - Chapter 26 - The Final Step

The arena was silent.

Not the noisy excitement from earlier matches.

This silence felt different.

Focused.

Heavy.

Both fighters stood motionless at opposite ends of the ring.

Raizen Tenrai.

Ren Sōma.

The Phantom Step.

A faint wind passed across the arena floor.

Ren exhaled slowly.

"Alright," he said quietly.

"No more testing."

Raizen nodded.

"Good."

The instructor raised his hand.

Neither fighter moved yet.

Then—

Ren vanished.

Faster than anything he had used all match.

His body blurred across the arena.

But this time he didn't circle.

He came straight forward.

A direct line.

Students gasped.

Even experienced observers leaned forward.

Ren's strike aimed for Raizen's centerline.

A perfect opening attack.

Raizen moved at the same instant.

Not backward.

Not sideways.

Forward.

Ren's eyes widened.

Raizen had stepped into the attack.

Their arms collided hard.

Raizen caught Ren's wrist again.

But this time Ren twisted immediately.

He twisted, using the captured arm to vault over Raizen's shoulder.

Aerial kick.

Raizen blocked it with his forearm.

The impact pushed him back two steps.

Ren landed.

Then attacked again.

Lightning-fast palm strikes.

Three.

Four.

Then five.

Raizen blocked most.

But one slipped through.

A sharp strike to his side.

The crowd erupted.

Ren stepped back again.

His breathing was heavier now.

"You're tough," he admitted.

Raizen adjusted his stance.

"You're fast."

Ren grinned.

"Fastest in the academy."

Then he lowered himself into the lowest stance Raizen had seen yet.

"This is the last one."

Chakra compressed into his legs.

Even from the stands, students could feel the tension.

Akari Mizuta leaned forward.

"He's going to use everything."

Daigo Mizuta nodded.

"Yeah."

Ren inhaled deeply.

Then exploded forward.

The fastest movement of the match.

But Raizen had already seen the pattern.

The push from Ren's left foot.

The shift of his hips.

The angle he committed to.

Raizen stepped exactly where Ren would land.

They crossed.

One movement.

One decision.

Raizen's redirected Ren's momentum.

His foot swept low.

Ren lost balance.

And the next moment—

He was flat on the arena floor.

Raizen's hand stopped just above his throat.

The instructor's voice rang out instantly.

"Match concluded!"

For a moment the arena was completely silent.

Then the crowd erupted.

Ren lay there staring at the sky.

Then he started laughing.

"Okay…"

He sat up slowly.

"Yeah… you win."

Raizen offered his hand.

Ren took it.

"You're scary," Ren said.

"But that was fun."

As they left the arena floor, a figure stepped down from the stands.

Wooden sword resting against his shoulder.

Tetsuo Kurogane.

His eyes locked onto Raizen's.

"Your turn," he said calmly.

The blade savant had been waiting.

And that fight would be nothing like the last.
