Chapter 9 - Chapter 9: The Living Battery

The first golden rays of the Aeterna sun pierced through the silver canopy, turning the morning mist into a shimmering veil of amber. Inside the shelter, the two High Elves began to stir, their bodies heavy with the lingering languor of a deep, mana-induced sleep.

Elodi was the first to groan, her long eyelashes fluttering as she reached out, expecting to feel the firm, radiating warmth of Ren's chest. Instead, her fingers met a strange, smooth surface. Her eyes snapped open, and she found herself staring directly into the face of Elize, who was waking up with a confused, sleepy pout.

Between them sat a orange lamp Ren had crafted. It pulsed with a soft, rhythmic amber light, humming quietly as it maintained a perfect 37.5°C, effectively acting as a silent, unmoving substitute for the man they had been clinging to all night.

"What... what is this?" Elize stammered, sitting up and clutching the blankets to her chest. She looked at the obsidian orb, then at the empty space where Ren should have been. Her face immediately flared with a mixture of relief and a strange, hollow disappointment. "Where did that beast go?"

Elodi didn't answer. She sat up slowly, her silk dress sliding down her shoulder. She felt well-rested—better than she had in years—as if her very soul had been recharged by the proximity of Ren's infinite mana. She looked toward the entrance of the shelter, where the light was strongest.

"Elize, look," the Princess whispered.

They both crawled toward the edge of the moss platform and peeked outside. There, sitting against the base of a massive silver tree, was Ren.

He was still in a sitting position, his arms crossed over his chest and his head tilted slightly forward. His breathing was slow and even, but even in sleep, he looked like a coiled spring—a predator ready to strike at the slightest sound. The morning dew had settled on his dark hair, making it glisten like diamonds, and the shadows under his eyes suggested he hadn't slept nearly as well as they had.

He looked lonely out there, separated from them by his own choice.

"He really stayed out there all night," Elodi murmured, her heart squeezing with a sudden, sharp ache of guilt. She remembered the way she had whimpered in her sleep, the way she had practically begged him to stay. "He protected us... and he didn't even take the comfort he was offered."

Elize bit her lip, her forest-green eyes softening as she watched him. She remembered the feeling of his hand on her thigh during his "escape" and the twitching of her ears. She had been prepared to loathe him, to call him a monster, but he had chosen the cold ground over the temptation of two royal virgins.

"He's an idiot," Elize whispered, though her voice lacked any real bite. She reached up to adjust her messy orange hair, her gaze lingering on the sharp line of Ren's jaw. "A brave, stubborn, handsome idiot."

The system window, invisible to the girls, flickered into life one last time above Ren's sleeping form, its text a mocking violet glow:

[ MORNING EVALUATION ]

Target 'Elodi' Affection: Increased by 15% (Reason: Noble Sacrifice).

Target 'Elize' Respect: Increased by 20% (Reason: Surprising Self-Restraint).

System Comment: The User has chosen the 'Lonely Guardian' path. While chivalrous, it is highly inefficient for mana-cycling. Try harder next time.

As if sensing their gaze, Ren's eyes snapped open—the deep, dark pupils instantly focusing on the two faces peeking out from the shelter. He didn't look flustered; he just looked tired.

"Morning," he rasped, his voice gravelly from the cold air. "Did the lamp work? Or am I going to hear more complaints about the 'dirty ground'?"

Ren let out a long, bone-cracking yawn, stretching his stiff limbs as the silver light of dawn illuminated the dew-slicked clearing. With a flick of his wrist, he dispelled the shimmering violet particles of his sleeping mat and, in a sudden surge of mana, resummoned the [Vanta-Steel Katana]. The obsidian blade hummed with a low, predatory frequency before he vanished it into a pocket dimension, his movements as fluid and lethal as a ghost's. Simultaneously, the amber lamp inside the shelter dissolved into nothingness, the lingering warmth leaving the two elves feeling suddenly chilled and exposed.

Elodi—stepped out of the shelter, her silk dress fluttering in the morning breeze. Her golden eyes fell upon a flat, boulder-like table Ren had smoothed out with his mana. On top of it sat several large, broad leaves acting as covers, steam still visible escaping from the edges.

"What... what is all this?" Elodi asked, her voice soft and heavy with the remnants of sleep.

"Breakfast," Ren said simply, scratching the back of his neck. "I kept it covered so the heat wouldn't escape. It's best if you eat it now; the flavors won't hold if you let it sit open in this damp air. If you're hungry, dive in."

Elize stepped forward, her nose twitching as she lifted one of the heavy leaves. Her eyes went wide. "Is this... meat? And glazed fruits? And... are these sautéed greens?"

"I just experimented a bit," Ren explained, leaning against a tree and watching them with a tired but observant gaze. "I took a quick scouting trip before the sun fully broke. I found some edible star-fruits and high-altitude mushrooms growing near the base of those silver oaks. Don't worry, the System scanned them—they're all non-toxic. As for the meat... I saw something glittering in the mist during the dawn hour. I followed the trail and found a deer."

"A deer?" Elize shrieked, her face pale. "Ren, you're kidding! You call this a 'feast' and an 'experiment'? I've been a Royal Guard for decades and I can't even cook like this!" She coughed, looking embarrassed as she poked at a piece of the succulent, shimmering protein. "That wasn't just a deer. Based on the crystalline structure of the marrow, that was a Jewel-Hided Hart. Their skin is as hard as diamond and their speed is legendary! How did you even...?"

"Yeah, it was pretty sturdy," Ren said with a shrug, his tone terrifyingly casual. "So I just pummelled it. And kept pummeling until the 'hardened jewel' part wasn't an issue anymore. Then I sliced it with the mana-blade. It's high in protein; good for your mana recovery."

Elodi didn't wait for further explanation. She took a bite of the jewel-meat, her eyes fluttering shut as the rich, savory juices exploded across her palate. "It's... it's incredible, Ren," she whispered, a small piece of a sautéed violet mushroom clinging to the corner of her lip.

Ren walked over, his shadow falling over the Princess. Before she could react, he reached out, his touch surprisingly light and calloused. He gently slid his thumb across the side of her mouth, catching the stray piece of food.

"You have some food right here, Princess," he murmured, his voice low and intimate.

Then, without breaking eye contact, he brought his thumb to his own lips and licked it clean.

The silence that followed was deafening. Elodi's face exploded into a feverish, strawberry red, her heart hammering so loudly against her ribs that she was sure he could hear it. Beside her, Elize froze, her fork halfway to her mouth, her forest-green eyes wide and shimmering with a sudden, intense heat that made her ears twitch violently.

"Ngh...!" Elize hissed, clutching her fork like a weapon. "You... you shameless...!"

[ SYSTEM NOTIFICATION ]

Target 'Elodi' Heart Rate: 155 BPM (Status: Melting).

Target 'Elize' Jealousy Level: 92% (Status: Critically Flustered).

Skill Unlocked: [Gastronomic Charm] — Food prepared by the user now has a 30% chance to trigger romantic fantasies.

Ren stared at the flickering violet text of the system window, his eye twitching in a mix of irritation and sheer disbelief.

"You're kidding me, right?" he thought, his mental voice sharp. "There's no such thing as a skill like that. That's not a 'skill,' that's just straight-up hypnosis. You're literally rewriting their brain chemistry over a piece of sautéed mushroom."

The system's response didn't appear as a cold notification this time; the text pulsed with a rhythmic, taunting glow, almost as if it were laughing at him.

---

[ SYSTEM OVERRIDE ]

Response: Hypnosis? Please. It's called 'Presentation.' And honestly, User, what is the use of that functional equipment you're carrying? You've got a perfectly calibrated set of hardware—a 7-inch masterpiece of biological engineering—and you're using it to... sit in the dirt and guard a tree?

Question: Are we an Assassin or a Monk? Because one of those is allowed to have a soul. The other is just a waste of a 'Returned' body.

---

Ren let out a long, weary sigh, closing the window with a sharp mental shove. "I'm a professional," he countered, though even he felt the lie tasting a bit bitter. "Professionals don't—"

Before he could finish his thought, a firm hand slammed into his chest, pushing him back with surprising strength. He looked down to see Elize, her face a mask of frantic, jealous rage, her emerald eyes sparking with mana.

"How long are you going to keep your face that close to the Princess?!" Elize barked, her voice cracking as she tried to force herself between them. She was breathing heavily, her chest heaving against her leather bodice in a way that made it very difficult for Ren to maintain his "professional" distance. "You've already... you already touched her! And then you... you licked it! Right in front of me! Have you no shame, you lecherous Beast?!"

Elodi, meanwhile, looked like she was about to undergo a total system meltdown. Her silver hair was slightly disheveled, and her long ears were twitching up and down in a rapid, rhythmic blur—a sign of extreme Elven agitation and arousal. She touched the spot on her lip where Ren's thumb had been, her fingers trembling.

"I-it's okay, Elize!" Elodi stammered, her voice soft and breathless. She looked up at Ren through her lashes, her golden eyes shimmering with a newfound, dangerous heat. "It's... it's not even annoying anyone. Really. He was just... being helpful. I didn't mind it at all."

"You didn't mind?!" Elize shrieked, turning toward her Princess. "Your Highness, he is a man! A 'Returned' soul with the manners of a mercenary! He's probably used that thumb trick on a thousand women in his old world!"

Ren stood his ground, crossing his arms over his chest. The sun was now fully up, catching the sharp angles of his face and the dark, mysterious depth of his eyes. He looked like a statue of a dark god, unmoved by the chaos of the two women before him.

"I only have one world to worry about now," Ren said, his voice a low, soothing vibration that seemed to settle right in their marrow. "And right now, that world involves getting a Princess to a Elven Capital without her starving to death or getting a vegetable stuck on her face."

He stepped forward, closing the gap Elize had tried to create. He reached out and, with a move so fast Elize couldn't even blink, he tucked a stray lock of orange hair behind her twitching ear. His fingers brushed against the sensitive tip of her cartilage, and Elize let out a sharp, muffled "Eep!" as her knees buckled for a split second.

"Eat your breakfast, Elize," Ren whispered, leaning down so his breath fanned against her neck. "You're going to need your strength if you're going to keep 'protecting' her from me all day."

[ SYSTEM STATUS UPDATE ]

Environmental Humidity: Increasing.

Target 'Elize' Internal Temperature: 102.4°F (Caution: Approaching Heatstroke).

Ren stood near the edge of the clearing, his back turned as he leaned against the trunk of a silver-leafed tree, the black katana resting against his shoulder.

"We're going to change, human," Elize called out, her voice sharp but carrying a noticeable tremor. "Don't even think about sneaking a peek, or I'll personally ensure you never use those... 'assets' the world tree gave you. Understood?"

Ren didn't even turn his head. "I've seen enough to know what a woman looks like, Elize. I'm more interested in not getting ambushed while your guard is literally down."

"Actually... I don't mind," Elodi murmured softly.

The silence that followed was deafening. Elize spun around, her jaw dropping so low it nearly hit the moss. "Your Highness?! What did you just say?"

Elodi's entire head turned a shade of pink that rivaled the dawn sky. She realized what had slipped out—her mana-drunk brain was still replaying the feeling of Ren's thumb on her lip and his heat from the night before.

"I—I mean! I agree with you!" Elodi squeaked, waving her hands frantically in front of her face. "I agree! He shouldn't look! It would be... highly inappropriate! Yes! That's what I meant!"

"Hmph. It better be," Elize grumbled, though she shot a suspicious, narrowed look at Ren's back.

Behind him is the sound of rustling silk and the soft friction of fabric against skin began to fill the quiet morning air. Even without looking, Ren's heightened senses—sharpened by his assassin past and his new mana—could hear everything. He could hear the soft sighs as they stepped out of their dresses, the subtle "clink" of elven jewelry, and the scent of jasmine and forest lilies that wafted toward him as their bare skin hit the cool air.

"Shut it," Ren thought, his grip tightening on the hilt of his blade. He focused on the horizon, watching the distant spires of the Elven Capital beginning to catch the morning sun.

"We're finished," Elize finally announced, her voice sounding a bit more confident now that she was back in her leather-and-silk traveling gear.

Ren turned around. Both women looked refreshed, though Elodi was still avoiding eye contact, her long ears drooping slightly in embarrassment. They were ready for the two-day trek to the heart of the Elven Kingdom.

"Good," Ren said, his voice flat and professional. "Let's move. The sooner we reach your city, the sooner I can figure out what a 'Returned Soul' is actually supposed to do in this world."

...

The canopy above thickened as they entered the "Whispering Thickets," where the trees grew so close together that their silver branches seemed to lace fingers, creating a tunnel of emerald twilight. The air was cool and carried a faint, rhythmic hum—the natural resonance of the forest's mana.

Ren walked with a predatory silence, his eyes scanning the dense undergrowth, but his mind was elsewhere. He looked over at Elize, whose hand was resting habitually on the hilt of her ceremonial dagger.

"Can I ask a question?" Ren started, his voice cutting through the rustle of leaves. "That fireball you threw at me when we first met... did you learn that through a set of instructions, or did you invent the structure yourself? And do you need a specific 'affinity' for it?"

He paused, trying to find a comparison from his old world. "Think of it like a gun. In my world, a gun is just a tool, but it needs specific ammunition to function. Is mana just the 'ammo,' or is the element—the fire itself—part of your own biological makeup?"

Elize stopped walking for a moment, looking at Ren with a mix of surprise and the slight condescension she reserved for "ignorant humans."

"You truly are from another realm if you have to ask that," she said, though her tone was softer than usual. "In Aeterna, mana is indeed the fuel—the 'ammo' as you call it—but the 'gun' is the soul's blueprint. Most mages are born with a primary affinity. Mine is Fire and Wind. I didn't 'invent' the fireball; it is a fundamental weave. However, the density and speed... that is where my own skill comes in. I shape the mana using my internal conduits to dictate how it explodes."

Elodi stepped closer, joining the conversation as they resumed their trek. "It is a matter of resonance, Ren," she explained gently, her golden eyes bright with intellectual passion. "The world is made of elemental spirits. My affinity is toward Light and Life. I cannot manifest a fireball like Elize because my soul does not vibrate at that frequency. For us, magic is like singing; you must know the melody (the spell) and have the voice (the affinity) to carry it."

She looked at Ren's hands, the ones that had manifested a lightning-clad katana from nothing.

"But you... you are different," Elodi continued, her voice dropping to a whisper. "You don't seem to have a 'frequency.' When you built that blade, it wasn't as if you were singing a song. It was as if you were rewriting the laws of the air itself. You didn't use an affinity; you used raw, unrefined power to force reality to change shape."

"So I'm a gun that can fire any caliber," Ren muttered, glancing at his palm.

"More like a weapon that creates its own ammunition out of thin air," Elize added, her eyes narrowing as she watched him. "Most mages have to draw mana from the atmosphere or their own limited pools. You... you are a fountain. If a normal mage tried to pour as much mana into a spell as you did into that 'Destructive Purple' strike, their veins would literally shatter from the pressure."

[ SYSTEM TECHNICAL INTERFACE ]

Concept Confirmed: [Universal Affinity] (Passive).

Explanation: Because the User's soul is a 'Foreign Singularity,' you are not bound by the elemental laws of Aeterna.

Current Capability: You can replicate any spell seen by the 'Eye of the System' by constructing a mechanical mana-blueprint.

New Quest Tip: Ask Elize to demonstrate a complex 'Fire Weave.' The System can record the blueprint for your future use.

---

Ren processed this, his thumb brushing the hilt of his sheathed blade. "So, if I watched you cast something more complex... I could theoretically build a device to replicate it?"

Elize let out a scoffing laugh, though her ears twitched playfully. "Typical human. Always looking for a shortcut. Magic takes decades to master, Ren. You can't just 'build' a high-tier spell because you saw it once."

"Is that a challenge?" Ren asked, a smirk finally breaking across his face.

"Maybe it is," Elize challenged back, her chest heaving slightly as she felt the competitive spark. "If we run into a pack of Shadow-Wolves today, I'll show you what a real Royal Weave looks like. Just try not to blink, or you'll miss it."

Elodi watched the two of them, a small, knowing smile on her lips. The tension between them was shifting from hostility to something more like a mutual, heated respect—though she couldn't help but feel a tiny pang of jealousy at how much attention Ren was suddenly paying to Elize's "technique."
