Chapter 14 - Chapter 14: The Debt of a Thousand Souls

The heavy silence of the tomb was punctuated only by the hitching of Elize's breath against Ren's chest. The air was stagnant, heavy with the dust of centuries and the crushing weight of unsaid goodbyes. Then, the violet interface flickered with an intensity that burned through the gloom, its light pulsating with an urgency Ren had never seen before.

[ SYSTEM OVERRIDE ]

User, the residual mana in this cavern is still anchored to the biological signatures of the deceased. Because of your 'Infinite Mana' core, there is a theoretical 0.04% chance of manifesting a Temporal Echo.

[ ANALYSIS ]

You can allow Elize to see her family one last time. You can bridge the veil between the living and the dead.

Ren's eyes sharpened behind his bangs. "How? If there's a way, I'll do anything. I don't care about the cost. Just look at her... she's broken. Tell me how to bring them back for a moment."

[ WARNING ]

The cost is not mana quantity, but physical 'Containment'. To act as a medium for a thousand souls, your nervous system will be pushed beyond its structural limits. Even with infinite power, your human vessel may shatter from the friction of their passage. Probability of internal hemorrhaging: 98%.

Ren didn't hesitate. He didn't even blink. "Understood. Do it."

Ren leaned down, his lips brushing against Elize's pointed ear. "Elize... look up. Don't let go of me, but turn around. I'm going to give you back what was stolen, just for a moment."

Elize pulled back, her eyes red-rimmed and confused. "Ren? What are you—"

Suddenly, a violent, blinding eruption of violet mana exploded from Ren's body. The shockwave was so powerful it blew the weeping willow branches outside the cave straight back. Ren's body stiffened; he felt like he was swallowing molten lead. His infinite mana was pouring out of his soul, but his physical veins felt like they were being scraped by glass.

Slowly, shimmering blue particles began to coalesce in front of the three central graves. The air grew warm. From the light, three figures emerged—tall, regal elven warriors with the same piercing green eyes as Elize. Her father and her two brothers stood there, their forms translucent but their smiles full of an ancient, heartbreaking love.

"Elize..." her father whispered, his voice a chorus of leaves. "Our little sprout... you've grown so strong."

Elize fell to her knees, her hands reaching out to touch the shimmering ghosts. They spoke—a frantic, beautiful conversation of "I love you" and "I'm proud of you"—as Elodi watched from the side, weeping at the miracle.

But the miracle had a price. Ren stood behind Elize, his teeth gritted so hard they threatened to crack. A thick stream of blood began to leak from his nose, staining his new black duster. His vision began to blur into a haze of static. His eyes, usually so sharp and piercing, started to droop as his brain screamed under the pressure of hosting a thousand lingering spirits.

"Is that... all?" Ren choked out, blood now trickling from the corner of his mouth. "No. Not enough. EVERYONE."

With a guttural scream of pure willpower, Ren forced his mana to expand further. The cavern groaned as the violet light turned a blinding white. One by one, then ten by ten, then hundred by hundred, the stone pillars ignited. The thousand warriors of the elven race manifested—a sea of glowing blue souls filling the underground cathedral.

The cavern was no longer a tomb; it was a hall of heroes.

The thousand souls turned as one. They didn't look at Elize or Elodi. They looked at the human—the man who was literally tearing his own body apart to give them a voice. In a chilling, harmonic unison that vibrated through the very bedrock of the world, the thousand warriors spoke.

"We see you, Son of the Void. We see the heart of the protector."

As one, the thousand ghosts of the elven army lowered their heads. They bowed—a deep, ancient gesture of absolute respect toward a human.

Ren's legs finally gave out. As the souls began to dissipate into a million blue fireflies, drifting upward toward the sky, Ren fell forward. He didn't even feel the cold moss as he hit the ground, his consciousness slipping into a pitch-black void.

Elize and Elodi screamed his name, rushing toward his limp body as the last of the blue fireflies faded into the dark, leaving behind a silence that was finally, for the first time in a thousand years, peaceful.

The air in the cavern, once cold and stagnant, was now thick with the scent of ozone and the fading shimmer of blue fireflies. Ren lay motionless on the moss, his breathing shallow and ragged. The blood from his nose had stained the collar of his new duster, and his skin, usually tan and healthy, had turned a ghostly, waxy pale.

"Princess! Please, heal him!" Elize screamed, her voice cracking as she cradled Ren's head in her lap. Her hands were shaking so violently she could barely hold him. "You're the High Priestess of the Moon! Save him!"

Elodi was already on her knees, her hands pressed firmly against Ren's chest. A soft, golden light emanated from her palms, but as the mana entered his body, her expression shifted from frantic hope to pure terror.

"I'm doing it! I'm trying!" Elodi sobbed, her forehead beaded with sweat. "But..."

"But what?!" Elize barked, her eyes wide with fear.

"The damage... it's overwhelming," Elodi whispered, her voice trembling. "Elize, his insides are a mess. It's like a storm passed through his veins. His mana circuits are vibrating so fast they're melting his own flesh from the inside. And his temperature..."

She gasped, pulling her hand back for a split second before pressing it back down. Ren's body was emitting a terrifying, radiant heat, as if a sun were trapped beneath his skin.

"He's burning up," Elodi cried, tears streaming down her face as she poured every ounce of her royal mana into him. "It's like a sickness, but worse. He gave so much to the ancestors that there's nothing left to hold his own soul together!"

Elize looked down at Ren's face—the man who had teased her, protected her, and just sacrificed his very life force to let her see her father's smile one last time. A fierce, desperate look crossed her face. She reached out, grabbing Elodi's arm with a grip of iron.

"Take mine," Elize commanded, her green eyes burning with a tearful resolve. "Please, Princess... take my mana as well! Every drop of it! I don't care if I never pull a bowstring again. Just don't let him go out like this!"

Elodi nodded, her golden eyes meeting Elize's green ones. She reached out her other hand, and Elize grasped it. A bridge of light formed between the two elves, their combined mana flowing like a rushing river into Ren's broken body.

In the dim light of the tomb, the two women knelt over the fallen human, their faces pale and exhausted as they drained themselves to keep his heart beating. The jewel-moths gathered in a halo around them, drawn to the sheer intensity of the love and desperation filling the room.

"Stay with us, Ren," Elodi whispered, her voice failing as her mana began to run dry. "You haven't seen the Capital yet. You haven't seen the wedding..."

Elize leaned down, her forehead touching Ren's burning brow. "Don't you dare die on us, you stupid, arrogant human. You still owe me a rematch."

The air in the cavern was suffocating, thick with the scent of burnt mana and the fading echoes of the dead. Elodi's hands were shaking so hard the golden light flickered like a dying candle.

"The potions..." Elodi gasped, her voice a mere thread. "We have potions... right? The Siren's Tears... the royal recovery draughts..."

Elize's vision was blurring, her own mana pool dangerously close to zero. "I... I have one left in my pack... but I dropped it... outside the threshold... when I ran in..."

"Fetch it," Elodi commanded, though her eyes remained fixed on Ren's pale face. "I will stay. I'll keep his heart beating... go!"

Elize looked at Elodi, then at Ren. She saw a trickle of blood still escaping Ren's lip. "Even if I have to crawl... I'll get it. I'll save this... this lowly human..."

Elodi nodded, though her heart sank. She reached for a small, crystalline vial at her waist—a minor stimulant—and downed it in one gulp. Her eyes flashed with a brief, artificial light as she doubled her efforts, her palms glowing white-hot against Ren's chest. "Go, Elize! Quickly!"

Elize turned, but as soon as she tried to stand, her legs gave out. She collapsed onto the cold stone floor. Her body felt like it was made of lead. Every muscle screamed in protest. She began to crawl, her fingers digging into the moss and dirt, dragging her body toward the cavern entrance.

Each inch felt like a mile. The light of the tomb was fading behind her.

I can't... she thought, her forehead hitting the ground. My mana is gone. I'm empty. She looked up at the stone pillars of her family. Should I just... give up? Right, Father? Brothers? At least this way... we'll finally be together. Permanently. I can just sleep here... in the quiet...

But then, a memory flickered in her mind. She felt the ghost of Ren's fingers pinning the emerald hairpin into her hair. She heard his voice calling her "cute." She felt the heat of his chest when he held her while she cried. She remembered the way he had just torn his own soul apart just so she could hear her father's voice one last time.

"You look cute like this."

Elize's eyes snapped open, a fierce, primal growl vibrating in her throat.

"No," she hissed. "Not yet."

With a surge of sheer adrenaline that defied elven biology, Elize forced herself up. She stumbled, her balance completely gone, crashing against the cavern walls, but she didn't stop. She reached the pack, snatched the glowing blue vial of Siren's Tears, and turned back.

She wasn't running; she was a whirlwind of desperation.

"He needs to live!" she screamed into the empty cavern, her voice echoing off the thousand graves. "That lowly human! That arrogant beast! That... that pervert! He doesn't get to die until I say so!"

She skidded back to Ren's side, her knees slamming into the ground so hard they bruised instantly. She uncorked the vial with her teeth and handed it to Elodi with trembling hands.

"The Tears," Elize panted, her face covered in sweat and dirt. "Give it to him. All of it."

As the glowing liquid passed Ren's lips, a calm, cool blue radiance began to spread from his throat to his chest, battling the violent violet heat. Elize collapsed against Ren's shoulder, her hand clutching his, waiting for the first sign of life.

The blue, glowing liquid of the Siren's Tears pooled in Ren's mouth, but his throat didn't move. His body was in a state of deep, traumatic shock—the "swallow reflex" was completely dead. The liquid began to dribble out the corner of his mouth, uselessly staining his chin.

Elodi's heart stopped. "He's... he's rejecting it. He can't take it in!"

Elize's eyes went wide with a terrifying, raw panic. She looked at the shimmering blue vial, then at Ren's pale, unresponsive lips. The memories of the last few days flashed before her eyes like a flickering film: Ren standing against the wolves, Ren teasing her about being a "kid," the gentle weight of his hand on her shoulder in front of her father's grave.

"No... I won't let you," Elize hissed.

With a decisive, desperate movement, Elize snatched the vial. She tilted her head back and took a massive gulp of the glowing Siren's Tears, holding the liquid in her mouth. Before Elodi could even gasp, Elize dived forward.

Their lips met in a frantic, wet collision. Elize used her tongue to force Ren's mouth open, pushing the magical draught deep into his throat while her hands cradled his face, willing him to breathe. She stayed there, her eyes squeezed shut, until she felt a faint, involuntary gulp from his throat.

She pulled back, gasping for air, her face flushed a deep crimson. "It... it worked a little. Princess! Help me!"

Elodi didn't need to be told twice. Seeing the life-saving potential of the act, she took the vial from Elize. "Forgive me, Ren," she whispered, her golden eyes full of tears. She drank the remaining half of the Tears and leaned down.

Unlike Elize's desperate, forceful kiss, Elodi's was soft and lingering. She transferred the rest of the essence into him, her lips trembling against his. She stayed connected to him, using the kiss to funnel her own remaining life-force directly into his soul.

They continued the cycle—drinking, kissing, and forcing the mana down his throat—until the empty vial clattered onto the stone floor.

Slowly, the terrifying heat emanating from Ren's skin began to subside. The violent, jagged rhythm of his heart smoothed out into a deep, steady thrum. The blue light of the Tears began to glow beneath his skin, weaving his shattered nerves back together.

Ren's fingers gave a small twitch. His chest expanded in a sudden, deep intake of breath. The violet mana that had been wildly leaking from him retracted, settling back into his core with a soft, humming thud.

His eyelids fluttered. Through a hazy, blurred vision, he saw two faces hovering inches from his own—Elize and Elodi, both of them disheveled, covered in tears and dirt, their lips still wet and glistening from the "treatment."

Ren's voice was a dry, raspy whisper, but the wit was still there.

"You know..." he croaked, his eyes slowly focusing on their blushing faces. "In my world... we usually start with a... 'hello' before the making out starts."

Elize's face exploded into a localized sun of embarrassment. She immediately pulled back, falling onto her bottom. "You! You were awake?! You... you arrogant, perverted, ungrateful beast!"

Elodi, however, didn't move. She let out a sob of pure relief and collapsed onto his chest, her arms wrapping around his neck. "Thank the Stars... thank the Stars you're back."

Ren's attempt at a suave comeback was short-lived. Even as he tried to offer a reassuring smirk, his internal HUD began to flicker violently, scrolling through red-text warnings that looked like a digital hemorrhage.

[ SYSTEM NOTIFICATION: POST-TRAUMATIC CRASH ]

User, congratulations on surviving the 'Kiss of Life' marathon. However, your adrenaline has hit zero. The Siren's Tears fixed the pipes, but the tank is still empty.

Round Two starts now: It's called 'The Fatigue Flow,' and it's about to hit you like a runaway carriage.

Pinging System Status: 💤 Goodnight, Hero.

Ren's eyes widened as a sudden, cold numbness washed over his limbs, replacing the blue warmth of the potion. He looked up at Elodi, who was still clinging to his chest, and at Elize, who was mid-sentence, probably preparing a lecture on his "indecency."

"Hey... wait," Ren croaked, his voice losing its strength. He pointed a shaking finger at the violet screen only he could see, then looked at the girls with a look of pure, panicked apology. "I'm about to... knockout in... five seconds..."

"What?" Elize stopped her rant, her ears standing straight up in alarm. "Ren? What do you mean five secon—"

"Four," Ren muttered, his head feeling like it weighed a thousand pounds.

"Ren! Stay with us!" Elodi cried, pulling back to look into his drooping eyes. "You just woke up! Don't you dare go back to sleep!"

"Three..." Ren's vision began to tunnel. The glowing blue fireflies of the ancestors seemed to spin in a dizzying dance. "Two..."

He tried to reach out, perhaps to pat Elodi's head or to tease Elize one last time about her being a tsundere, but his arm felt like it was made of lead.

"One."

True to his word—and the System's brutal calculation—Ren's eyes rolled back, and his head lolled to the side. He went completely limp in their arms, his snores soft but rhythmic. The "Fatigue Flow" had claimed him, dragging his consciousness down into a deep, dreamless slumber meant to stitch his soul back together.

The silence that followed was heavy, broken only by the sound of the waterfall outside and the soft breathing of the unconscious human. Elize and Elodi sat in the dim light of the tomb, exhausted, mana-drained, but no longer terrified.

"He really is the most annoying man I've ever met," Elize whispered, though she reached out and gently moved a lock of hair away from Ren's closed eyes. Her fingers lingered there, her touch incredibly soft. "Counting down his own collapse... who does that?"

Elodi smiled through her remaining tears, resting her head on Ren's shoulder as they sat on the moss. "A man who gives everything until there is nothing left. We can't stay here, Elize. The sun is setting, and the tomb will seal its doors soon."

Elize nodded, her gaze hardening with a new sense of purpose. She looked at her new tactical gear—the clothes Ren had made for her—and felt the weight of the emerald hairpin. She wasn't just a guard anymore; she was a protector of the man who had protected her family's memory.

"I'll carry him," Elize said, standing up on shaky but determined legs. "You lead the way, Princess. We need to find a secure place to camp. If any monsters think he's an easy target while he's like this... they'll have to go through me first."

Together, they maneuvered Ren's heavy, muscular frame onto Elize's back. With Elodi guiding them with a small orb of golden light, they began the slow trek out of the Hollow of the Fallen. Behind them, the blue fireflies gave one last collective shimmer of respect before the great stone doors groaned shut, sealing the sanctuary of the ancestors once more.
