Chapter 5 - Chapter 14 – The Night of Choice

The city lights flickered softly beneath the dark sky.

Night had arrived.

Silence settled over the financial district, heavy and watchful.

Inside Zhao Group headquarters, most departments had already shut down their systems.

The offices were dark.

Empty.

Leaving only the security monitoring screens glowing faintly in the control room.

Blue light washed over the faces of the night shift team.

Supervisor Lin stood in front of the surveillance panel.

Her eyes were fixed on the internal network activity log.

Lines of code scrolled rapidly.

Green.

Green.

Green.

Then—

One specific user access pattern appeared.

Red.

Unauthorized.

Supervisor Lin's fingers tightened slightly on the edge of the console.

"Trace this account," she said quietly.

Her voice was steady, but her heart raced.

The technician beside her nodded.

"Yes, supervisor."

The system began running background verification algorithms.

Seconds felt unusually long.

Each tick of the clock was a hammer blow.

The room held its breath.

Finally—

The technician spoke.

His voice was hushed.

"Supervisor… the signal originates from the financial database encryption terminal."

Supervisor Lin's expression turned cold.

Internal access.

High clearance.

The traitor.

"Report to Miss Zhao immediately," she said.

***

Inside the chairman's office, Lina Zhao was standing near the window when Director Chen entered hurriedly.

The door clicked shut behind him.

"Miss Zhao."

Lina did not turn around immediately.

She was watching the city lights.

Reflecting.

Planning.

"What is it?" she asked calmly.

"We found suspicious internal system access activity," Director Chen said.

His voice was tight.

Lina closed her eyes briefly.

Then she turned.

Her face was unreadable.

"Is it confirmed?" she asked.

"Yes," Director Chen replied.

Silence filled the room.

Heavy.

Significant.

The invisible net had finally caught something.

"Who is it?" Lina asked.

Director Chen hesitated.

He looked down at his tablet.

"The finance department data coordination officer."

Lina nodded slowly.

Expected.

Not surprising.

He had access.

He had motive.

He had weakness.

"Has he been contacted by external communication channels?" Lina asked.

"Yes," Director Chen replied. "Unknown number calls were recorded. Encrypted lines."

Lina walked slowly toward the desk and picked up her tablet.

The screen lit up her face.

"Do not expose him yet," she said.

Director Chen blinked.

"Miss Zhao… why?"

"We have proof. We can fire him. Call the police."

"Because Victor Han wants pressure," Lina said calmly.

Her eyes were sharp.

"If we expose the traitor now, Victor will change strategy."

"He will retreat."

"And we will lose the chance to strike back."

Director Chen frowned.

"So we are pretending not to know?"

"Yes."

Lina's eyes became very cold.

Like ice.

"Let him believe the trap is hidden."

"Let him walk into it."

Director Chen felt a chill run down his spine.

Miss Zhao was planning something deeper.

Something dangerous.

"I understand," he whispered.

***

At the same time.

Inside Han Corporation penthouse.

Victor Han stood quietly near the window.

A glass of wine was in his hand.

The dark liquid swirled gently.

His assistant spoke carefully behind him.

"Sir, the internal mole inside Zhao Group has established contact."

Victor's lips curved faintly.

A smile of victory.

"Did he confirm cooperation?"

"Yes," the assistant replied.

Victor picked up the wine glass on the table.

"Good."

He took a slow sip.

The taste was rich.

Bitter.

Like victory.

Then he spoke quietly.

"Tell him to prepare to transfer encryption access tonight."

The assistant nodded.

"Yes, sir."

Victor's eyes darkened slightly.

He looked out at the Zhao Group building in the distance.

It was dark.

Vulnerable.

"Tonight," Victor said softly, "Zhao Group's internal defense will fall."

"And Lina Zhao… will fall with it."

***

Night deepened.

The clock ticked toward midnight.

Inside Zhao Group headquarters, Lina stood alone on the balcony.

The wind moved gently across her hair.

Cool.

Sharp.

Her phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

She answered.

"Hello."

The nervous male voice spoke immediately.

"Miss Zhao… it's me."

"Yes," Lina said calmly.

She did not use his name.

He was already dead to her.

"I… I can help you," the man said.

His voice trembled.

Lina's gaze turned colder.

"Continue."

The man swallowed nervously.

"Victor Han wants me to transfer internal encryption authentication data tonight."

Silence.

The wind hummed in the background.

Then Lina asked quietly,

"When?"

"Midnight," the man replied.

"Where?"

"The network maintenance terminal. Floor forty-two."

Lina closed her eyes briefly.

Victor Han was planning a final trigger.

If the traitor transmitted encryption keys…

Han Corporation could gain full internal network control.

They could lock her out.

They could steal everything.

Very dangerous.

But Lina spoke calmly.

"Do it."

The man froze.

"Miss Zhao…?"

"Follow Victor Han's instruction," Lina repeated.

Her voice was steady.

Unyielding.

"But— If I do that… Zhao Group will be compromised."

"I will protect you," Lina said quietly.

The man was silent.

He was trapped.

Between Victor's threat and Lina's promise.

Then he whispered,

"Thank you."

The call ended.

Lina lowered the phone slowly.

The wind touched her face.

Tonight.

The real confrontation would begin.

***

Midnight arrived.

The city held its breath.

Inside Zhao Group internal maintenance room.

The traitor sat in front of the terminal.

His hands trembled slightly.

Sweat beaded on his forehead.

His phone vibrated once.

Unknown number.

He answered.

"Yes?"

Victor Han's voice came coldly.

"Begin transfer."

The man swallowed.

His fingers moved across the keyboard.

Click.

Click.

Click.

Encryption authentication data began transmitting.

Slowly.

Steadily.

A progress bar crawled across the screen.

20%…

50%…

80%…

Then—

The system screen suddenly turned red.

⚠ SECURITY OVERRIDE DETECTED.

⚠ UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS BLOCKED.

⚠ TRACE COMPLETE.

The man's eyes widened.

His breath stopped.

"What is this—"

The door behind him opened quietly.

No sound.

Just presence.

Lina Zhao stood there.

Her expression was very calm.

Very cold.

Like a judge delivering a sentence.

"Did you really think," Lina said softly, "that I would not monitor internal transmission channels?"

The man collapsed onto the chair.

His face was pale.

"Miss Zhao… I—"

Footsteps sounded behind Lina.

Director Chen and the security team entered.

Lights flashed.

Shadows lengthened.

Lina looked at the man quietly.

No pity.

No anger.

Just finality.

"Victor Han wanted you to move tonight."

The man trembled.

"Yes…"

"But I wanted the same thing," Lina said.

Silence.

Thick.

Heavy.

Then Lina spoke one final sentence.

"Because now, Victor Han will believe his plan succeeded."

The man's eyes widened.

"What…?"

Lina's gaze turned toward the city night outside the window.

Far away.

The Han Corporation tower glowed like a beacon.

***

Inside Han Corporation penthouse.

Victor Han looked at the network control report.

The screen showed 'Transfer Complete.'

A faint smile appeared.

Satisfied.

Arrogant.

"Transmission confirmed."

His assistant spoke.

"Sir… Zhao Group internal encryption has been compromised."

Victor closed his eyes slowly.

He exhaled.

"Good."

Then he whispered,

"Lina Zhao… I win this round."

He took another sip of wine.

He believed he had won.

He believed she was defeated.

***

But far away.

In the darkness of the city balcony.

Adrian Lu stood quietly, watching the night.

The wind lifted his coat slightly.

His phone screen showed a secondary data log.

Encryption Key Status: Fake.

Decoy Protocol: Active.

His voice was almost inaudible.

"Interesting."

Because Victor Han did not know one thing.

He did not know the trap had sprung the other way.

The encryption data transmitted tonight…

Was fake.

A decoy.

A lie.

And tomorrow…

When Victor tried to use those keys…

The real game would begin.
