Chapter 35 - An Assignment

(BLUE'S POV)

Yesterday was one of the hardest days of my life.

The moment I saw Mason's face without the sunglasses and mask, something deep inside me fractured.

Bruises bloomed across his pale skin like dark, angry flowers — ugly shades of purple and black spreading over his cheek, his split lip still crusted with dried blood, and one eye swollen nearly shut. The sight hit me harder than any bite, any claw, or any wound I'd taken in nine hundred years of war. My chest tightened painfully, until breathing felt like something I had to remind myself to do. It wasn't my undead body reacting. It was something far more human, far more terrifying — a sharp, crushing ache centered entirely on the broken boy standing in front of me.

This is my fault.
