Chapter 34 - Leaving

(MASON'S POV)

I didn't answer Blue's question.

The words stuck in my throat like shards of glass, sharp and impossible to swallow. My heart hammered so hard it felt like it might crack my already bruised ribs. Blue stood there in my bedroom, calm and unmoved, waiting for me to choose between the devil I knew and the one I didn't.

I couldn't do it.

Instead, I walked past him on shaking legs, hands trembling as I opened my bedroom door. The hallway stretched out like a tunnel I didn't want to enter. Every step sent fresh pain shooting through my body, but I kept moving, slow and deliberate, until I reached the top of the stairs.

Then I froze.

My father stood at the bottom, looking up at me with pure murder in his eyes. His face was flushed red, veins bulging in his neck, fists clenched at his sides like he was already imagining them connecting with my face.

The second he saw me—hoodie, beanie, sunglasses, the whole pathetic attempt to hide—he exploded.
