Chapter 4 - Adaptation

"With this treasure, I summon Eight-Handled Sword Divergent Sila Divine General Mahoraga!"

When those words were uttered, a large shadow appeared in front of the boy, and from it was raised a large figure, seemingly 3 to 4 meters tall, tied down by what appeared to be a large number of seals. Dagon ignored it, charging toward him, until suddenly whatever was inside broke through the seals. It had completely white skin, a very muscular body, 4 small wings where its eyes would be, and a large golden wheel at its back.

It raised one of its arms, slapping Dagon with the back of its hand, sending him flying off to where Jogo and Toji were, landing right at Jogo's feet.

Jogo and Toji immediately looked at the creature's direction, and it was now turning to the boy, clearly seeking to attack him aswell.

Jogo then changed his priorities, ordering his ember insects to form defensively around him and Dagon before dropping to his knees and turning to him.

"Dagon! Are you alright, friend?"

Dagon didn't respond, though he managed to stumble back up.

In Jogo's moment of distraction, Toji Fushiguro's eyes widened as he stared at the boy intently. Then, he ran towards the beast.

Though it was too late to save him, Mahoraga had already begun winding up a kick.

Then, suddenly, Mahoraga was bitten once on his calf.

Then there was a second one at his back, then a third one on his head.

Then, another one. And another one. And another one.

Mahoraga was being bitten all over his body by Dagon's shikigami, a large group of severely oversized eels and other large fish.

Seizing the opportunity, the boy began running as far from Mahoraga as possible, reaching the beach area of the domain.

"That thing is a bigger threat than those sorcerers. Better to get on with defeating it as soon as possible." Said Dagon.

"Nice one, Dagon!"

Jogo called out for his friend.

"When the boy summoned that creature, he stopped expanding his domain, which allowed me to get my sure hit effect back. Simple as that."

While the two of them spoke, Toji moved swiftly, reaching the boy who helplessly kept trying to run away, then grabbing and lifting him with one arm.

"You're... Not going to kill me?"

"That's not my intention. But tell me. Any more bright ideas to save us from this thing? Ones that don't include summoning a gigantic uncontrollable monster that wants to kill all of us?"

"No, not unless this domain breaks or it begins clashing with another one."

As they spoke, the wheel on Mahoraga's back completed a full rotation, and suddenly Dagon's shikigami began sliding off of the divine general's skin. Dagon then began creating more and more of them, though they all met the same fate. The divine general immediately healed all of his bite injuries and turned to those two who were closest to him.

Dagon then turned to Jogo.

"He's somehow adapted to my technique! My Shikigami can no longer harm him!"

"Then turn off your domain expansion," Jogo said, his eyes intently focused on Mahoraga.

"Other than a domain expansion, I can't use a technique if I'm inside your domain. Unless..."

"Yes, Jogo?"

"Unless I used my new domain projection technique. Though I doubt I have enough mastery over my technique to damage that thing enough to destroy it. And if I don't, then..."

The two curses then speak in unison.

"It'll just adapt!"

Mahoraga was already making its way toward the two sorcerers Dagon defeated, causing panic for the boy.

"Shit! Nanami! Maki!" He then turned his head to Toji, pushing against him to set himself free.

"We've got to help them!"

Toji looked at him dismissively.

"Hah, no chance. Neither of us will get there in time, even at full speed."

"If only I had my shikigami!" The boy complained.

Then, as soon as he said that, the domain suddenly broke apart. Dagon had willingly stopped using it.

Toji then let the boy go.

"Go on then. Save your fellow sorcerers."

He wasted no time.

"10 shadows technique! Toad!" A large group of long-tongued, slightly oversized toads appeared in front of him.

Just as Mahoraga was about to cut the two unconscious sorcerers apart, two long tongues wrapped around each of them, and they were pulled back to Toji Zenin and his ally.

Mahoraga then began running toward them instead.

"What now, kid?"

"Don't worry. I've got an idea! MAX ELEPHANT!"

Suddenly, an elephant fell from the subway station's roof, down to Mahoraga. Its sheer weight made the divine general almost buckle to its knees, although it prevailed and managed to push the elephant off, throwing it onto the subway tracks.

"NUE!"

Out of the boy's shadow hopped an orange bird creature, and both he and Toji each grabbed one of its legs with one hand and one of the injured sorcerers with their free arms, being carried up to the top of the stairs.

Mahoraga once again changed course, now looking at Jogo and Dagon.

"What's the plan, Jogo?"

"I've got 48 ember insects. I should use 6 to carry each one of us, so it leaves 36 of them."

"You think it can kill that thing?"

"If not kill, then seriously harm. Enough time for us to find another plan! EMBER INSECTS! DESTROY THATSHIKIGAMI!"

As they approached, Mahoraga attempted to crush one of them between his hands, though that only caused another explosion, blowing a hole through where his palm once was.

As more and more of them hit, Mahoraga was pushed back, and pieces were removed from his body, leaving him, by the end of it, armless and with two barely hanging legs.

The wheel in his back slowly turned, and at that moment, all of his opponents noticed he was soon going to heal back fully. They had to do something about it.

Then, throughout the subway, a scream was heard.

"MAX ELEPHANT! WATER JET!"

At his owner's command, the shikigami elephant began spitting a strong jet of water at Mahoraga. Toji scoffed.

"Water? Are you planning to bathe him?"

The boy then quickly responded:

"Water by itself doesn't do much. Though electrified water? That's a whole different story! NUE! GO!"

At that moment, the bird shikigami began passively conducting and producing its very own electricity, similar to lightning.

In response, Dagon began using his mouth to produce water, spraying it to help the elephant cover the divine general.

"Dagon, what are you doing?"

Jogo curiously asked. Then, the bird shikigami appeared directly above the divine general, sending a strong series of lightning attacks, mixing with the water to create a strong explosion of electricity, Mahoraga and the ground around him shaking in response.

"Not bad, kid." Said toji, a smirk forming on his face.

The boy smiled.

"That must've at least interrupted the wheel from adapting! Now, to finish Mahoraga off-"

Just as he said that, a sound was heard that made all 4 of them shudder in fear.

It was the wheel.

Clicking into place.
