# Chapter 6: The Reward
"And take care," the Elder said. He finished his sentence. His voice was low. Only Lin Yu could hear. "Power brings enemies. Watch your back."
Lin Yu nodded. He understood. The Elder knew about Chen's uncle. He knew about the poison. But he did not stop it. In this sect, strength was the only rule. If Lin Yu could not handle the poison, he did not deserve to live. It was harsh. It was cruel. But it was the way of cultivation.
"Thank you, Elder," Lin Yu said. He bowed again. He held the jade token tight. It was smooth. It was cool. It felt heavy in his palm. It was not just a key. It was a target. Everyone knew he had it now. Everyone knew he was an Outer Disciple.
The Elder turned away. He walked to the high seats. He sat down. He watched the crowd. He did not look at Lin Yu again.
Lin Yu turned to the exit. The crowd parted. They made a path for him. They looked at him with new eyes. Before, he was invisible. He was a servant. Now, he was someone. Some looked with respect. Some looked with hate. Some looked with fear.
He walked through the gate. The air outside was fresh. The arena noise faded behind him. He walked down the stone path. The trees were tall. The leaves were green. The sun was high. It was a nice day. But Lin Yu did not relax. He felt eyes on his back. He knew some were Chen's friends. They might try to attack him. Now was the easiest time. He was tired. He was alone.
He kept walking. He did not run. Running showed fear. He walked calmly. He held his hand near his sleeve. The Silent Edge was there. He could draw it fast. He watched the shadows. He listened to the wind.
[Victory Achieved.]
The Sword Box voice spoke in his mind. It was clear. It was calm.
[Energy Gained: 200. Current Energy: 300. Status Updated: Outer Disciple.]
Lin Yu did not answer out loud. He kept walking. He talked in his mind.
"Two hundred energy," Lin Yu thought. "It is a lot."
[Yes. Winning a public match gives more energy. Defeating a disciple gives more energy. You did well.]
"Chen used poison," Lin Yu thought. "The Elder saw it. He did not stop it."
[The sect is corrupt. Strength matters more than rules. You must be stronger than the rules.]
Lin Yu nodded slightly. He agreed. He could not rely on elders. He could not rely on rules. He could only rely on himself. And the Sword Box.
He reached the Outer Disciple quarters. It was a separate area. There was a gate. Two guards stood there. They wore blue robes. They held spears. They looked at Lin Yu. They saw his servant clothes. They frowned.
"Stop," one guard said. "Servants cannot enter."
Lin Yu showed the jade token. He held it up. The green jade glowed in the sun. The guards saw the symbol. Their eyes changed. They stood straight. They bowed.
"Welcome, Senior Brother," the guard said.
Lin Yu put the token away. He did not speak. He walked through the gate. The inside was different. The paths were wider. The buildings were better. The wood was new. The paint was fresh. There were flowers in the gardens. It was quiet. Peaceful.
He found his room number. It was on a small house. It was not a mansion. But it was better than the servant hall. He opened the door. He walked in.
The room was clean. There was a bed. It had a soft mattress. There was a table. It had two chairs. There was a window. It looked out at a small garden. There was a washing basin. There was a closet. It was empty. He could put his clothes there.
He closed the door. He locked it. He put a chair under the handle. It was a habit. He did not trust anyone. He walked to the bed. He sat down. He let out a long breath. He was alone. Finally.
He took out the jade token. He looked at it. He turned it over. He felt the energy inside. It was weak. But it was access. He put it in his bag. He took out the Sword Box. It was invisible to others. But in his hand, it appeared. It was dark metal. It hummed softly.
[Rest,] the Box said. [You used much Qi.]
"I need to check my status," Lin Yu said. He whispered.
[Status Screen Open.]
A blue screen appeared. Lin Yu read it.
[Name: Lin Yu]
[Status: Outer Disciple]
[Cultivation: Qi Level 1 (Peak)]
[Energy: 300]
[Swords: Silent Edge (Level 2)]
[Skills: Shadow Slash (Level 2), Qi Breathing (Level 1)]
[Reputation: Rising Star]
"Level 1 Peak," Lin Yu said. "I am close to Level 2."
[Yes. The victory helped. The energy absorption helped. You need to meditate. Breakthrough soon.]
Lin Yu put the Box away. It faded into his chest. He stood up. He walked to the window. He looked outside. He could see the servant quarters in the distance. They were small. They were gray. He used to live there. Now he was here. It was a big change. But he knew it was dangerous. Chen would not give up. Chen's uncle would not give up.
He heard a knock on the door.
Lin Yu froze. He did not move. He listened. Who was it? He did not tell anyone where he was. The guards knew. But they would not knock. They would announce.
"Who is it?" Lin Yu asked. His voice was low.
"It is me," a voice said. It was soft. It was familiar.
Lin Yu relaxed slightly. He knew that voice. He walked to the door. He moved the chair. He opened the door.
Mei Ling stood there. She wore her green servant robes. She held a basket. She looked around. She looked worried.
"You should not be here," Lin Yu said. He stepped back. He let her in. He closed the door quickly. He locked it. He put the chair back.
"I know," Mei Ling said. She put the basket on the table. She took off her hood. Her hair was messy. She was out of breath. "But I had to come."
"The guards saw you?" Lin Yu asked.
"I gave them a bun," Mei Ling said. She smiled weakly. "They let me pass. For now. If an Elder sees me, I will be punished."
Lin Yu frowned. He walked to the table. He looked at the basket. It had food. Meat. Rice. Fruit. It was better than servant food.
"You brought this?" Lin Yu asked.
"Yes," Mei Ling said. "You won. You are Outer Disciple now. You need energy. You cannot eat servant food anymore. It is too low quality."
Lin Yu looked at her. He felt something in his chest. It was warm. In his past life, no one cared about his food. No one cared about his health. He died alone. Now, someone risked punishment to bring him meat.
"Thank you," Lin Yu said. He sat down. He picked up a piece of meat. He ate it. It was cooked well. It was tasty.
"Do not thank me," Mei Ling said. She sat on the other chair. She leaned forward. She lowered her voice. "Lin Yu, listen to me. Chen is angry."
"I know," Lin Yu said. He chewed slowly. "He yielded. He is humiliated."
"Not just Chen," Mei Ling said. "His uncle. Elder Chen. I heard him talking. In the kitchen. He was on a mission. He came back early. He was angry."
"What did he say?" Lin Yu asked. He put the meat down. He looked at her. His eyes were sharp.
"He said... he said the arena was a mistake," Mei Ling said. She looked at her hands. She played with her apron. "He said next time, there will be no arena. Next time, it will be in the wild. Where no one sees."
Lin Yu nodded. He expected this. The Elder warned him. *Power brings enemies.* Mei Ling confirmed it.
"Did he say when?" Lin Yu asked.
"Soon," Mei Ling said. "Maybe this week. Maybe this month. He is planning a mission. He wants you to join. He says it is for Outer Disciples. But it is a trap."
Lin Yu thought. He tapped the table. He needed to be smart. He could not refuse a mission. It was against sect rules. But he could not walk into a trap.
"Did he say what mission?" Lin Yu asked.
"Beast Hunt," Mei Ling said. "In the Black Forest. It is dangerous. Many disciples die there."
Lin Yu remembered the Sword Box warning. [Chen will use poison. Or hidden weapons. Or allies.] The Black Forest was perfect for accidents. Beasts could kill you. Or friends could stab you in the back.
"I will go," Lin Yu said. His voice was calm.
Mei Ling looked up. Her eyes were wide. "You will go? It is death."
"If I do not go, they will punish me," Lin Yu said. "If I go, I have a chance. I choose the chance."
Mei Ling bit her lip. She wanted to argue. But she knew he was right. He was a disciple now. He had duties. He could not hide forever.
"Then take this," Mei Ling said. She reached into her sleeve. She took out a small bottle. It was white. It had no label.
"What is it?" Lin Yu asked. He took the bottle. It was warm.
"Antidote," Mei Ling said. "My grandmother made it. Before she died. It works on many poisons. Not all. But most."
Lin Yu looked at the bottle. It was precious. Servants did not have antidotes. It must have cost her a lot. Or it was her only protection.
"I cannot take this," Lin Yu said. He tried to give it back. "You need it."
"I have none," Mei Ling said. She pushed his hand back. "I do not go into the wild. You do. You need it more. Please. For me."
Lin Yu looked at her. He saw the worry in her eyes. He saw the care. He put the bottle in his bag. He would not argue. He would use it. And he would protect her.
"Okay," Lin Yu said. "I will take it. I will come back."
"You better," Mei Ling said. She stood up. She walked to the door. She stopped. She looked at him. "Lin Yu. Do not trust anyone. Not even the Elders."
"I know," Lin Yu said.
Mei Ling opened the door. She looked outside. The path was clear. She stepped out. She put her hood up. She walked away fast. She did not look back.
Lin Yu closed the door. He locked it. He stood there for a minute. He held the bag. He felt the bottle inside. He felt the token inside. He felt the Sword Box inside his chest.
He walked to the bed. He lay down. He looked at the ceiling. The wood was clean. No cracks. No dust. It was a good room. He might die soon. But for now, it was his.
"Box," Lin Yu said. "Can you analyze the antidote?"
[Yes. Scan initiated.]
A blue light scanned the bottle in his bag.
[Analysis Complete. Basic Antidote. Effectiveness: 70%. Works on Level 2 Poisons. Weak against Level 3.]
"Chen used Level 3," Lin Yu said. "In the arena."
[Yes. This antidote might not save you next time. You need stronger protection.]
"How?" Lin Yu asked.
[Upgrade your Qi. Upgrade your swords. Or buy better pills. You have 300 Energy. You can buy a Skill Upgrade. Or save for a new sword.]
Lin Yu thought. A new sword cost 500 Energy. He did not have enough. He needed 200 more. A skill upgrade cost 100 Energy. He could afford that.
"Upgrade Shadow Slash," Lin Yu said. "To Level 3."
[Confirmed. Energy Deducted: 100. Current Energy: 200.]
Lin Yu felt a flow of information. It went into his arm. Into the sword. He understood the skill better. He knew how to cut deeper. He knew how to cut faster. The range increased. Before, it was ten feet. Now, it was fifteen feet.
"Good," Lin Yu said. He sat up. He stretched his arm. He felt the power. It was ready.
He stood up. He walked to the table. He ate the food Mei Ling brought. He ate all of it. He needed the energy. He needed the strength. He drank the water. He cleaned the plate. He put the basket by the door. He would return it later.
He sat on the bed. He started to meditate. He closed his eyes. He used the Qi Breathing Method. He breathed in. He breathed out. He felt the energy in the air. It was thicker in the Outer Quarters. There were formation arrays. They gathered Qi.
He pulled the Qi into his body. It flowed through his veins. It went to his dantian. It stored there. His level was Peak Level 1. He was close to Level 2. He pushed harder. He felt a barrier. It was hard. It was like a wall. He hit it with his Qi. It did not break. He hit it again. It cracked. He needed more time. Maybe a pill. Maybe a fight.
He stopped meditating. He opened his eyes. It was evening. The sun was setting. The room was dark. He lit a candle. The flame was small. It flickered.
He took out the Silent Edge. He wiped it with a cloth. He checked the edge. It was sharp. It was clean. He put it away. He lay on the bed. He put his hands on his stomach. He thought about the future.
He was an Outer Disciple. He had enemies. He had a goal. He needed to survive the mission. He needed to kill Chen's plan. He needed to grow stronger. He needed to find the Beast Tamers. The ones who killed him in his past life.
He remembered the pain. The blade in his chest. The blood. The cold. He would not feel that again. He promised himself.
He closed his eyes. He slept. He did not dream. He rested deeply.
In the morning, the bell rang. It was loud. It echoed across the sect. It was the morning call. All disciples must gather.
Lin Yu woke up. He washed his face. He put on his new robes. They were blue. They were outer disciple robes. They felt smooth. He put on his shoes. He tied them tight. He checked his bag. Token. Antidote. Sword. Pills. Everything was there.
He opened the door. He walked out. The air was cold. The sun was rising. Other disciples were walking too. They looked at him. Some nodded. Some ignored him. Some whispered.
"He is the servant," one said.
"He beat Chen," another said.
"He will die soon," a third said.
Lin Yu heard them. He did not care. He walked to the gathering square. The Elder was there. He stood on a platform. He looked at the disciples. There were fifty of them. Lin Yu stood at the back. He watched.
"Listen," the Elder said. "There is a mission. Beast Hunt. Black Forest. We need cores. Ten cores each. You have three days."
Lin Yu's heart did not jump. He expected it. Mei Ling was right. The mission was real. The trap was set.
"Who leads?" a disciple asked.
"Senior Brother Chen," the Elder said.
Chen stepped forward. He wore armor. He looked healed. His wrist was not broken. He must have used good medicine. He looked at Lin Yu. He smiled. It was a cold smile.
"Join my team," Chen said. He looked at Lin Yu. "Lin Yu. You are new. You need guidance."
It was not a request. It was an order. And it was a trap. Lin Yu would be alone with Chen and his friends. In the forest. No witnesses.
Lin Yu stepped forward. He stood straight. He looked at Chen. He did not show fear.
"Okay," Lin Yu said. "I will join."
The Elder nodded. "Good. Dismissed. Prepare. Leave in one hour."
The disciples scattered. Chen walked to Lin Yu. He stopped close. Too close.
"Bring your sword," Chen said. "You will need it."
"I always do," Lin Yu said.
Chen laughed. He walked away. He joined his friends. They looked at Lin Yu. They looked like wolves. They smelled blood.
Lin Yu turned away. He walked to the gate. He had one hour. He needed to buy supplies. He needed to prepare. He needed to talk to the Sword Box.
[Trap Confirmed,] the Box said. [Survival Probability: 40%.]
"Raise it," Lin Yu said.
[How?]
"We prepare," Lin Yu said. "We buy traps. We buy pills. We plan."
[Agreed. Let us go.]
Lin Yu walked faster. The sun was higher. The clock was ticking. The Black Forest waited. Death waited. But Lin Yu was ready. He had the Silent Edge. He had the Sword Box. He had the antidote. And he had a promise to keep.
He would come back. He would not die. Not today. Not ever.
