Board: "Because the Regulator's power was absolute. They could unmake anything. Remake anything. They could have ended existence itself with a thought. The power of existence could not allow that."
Golden God: "But you said there can only be one Regulator at a time. If the first was killed..."
Board: "The position does not die. It passes. Every time a Regulator is born, they are hunted. Assassinated. By forces that do not even know why they kill... only that they must. It has happened countless times. The Regulator is always reborn. Always killed. Always."
Silver Goddess: "And the Mysterious person?"
Board: "The Mysterious Person knows where the current Regulator is. He protects them. No one else in all the infinite worlds knows. Not even the Regulator themselves."
Golden God: "They don't know what they are?"
Board: "They believe it is a myth. A legend. A story. And as long as they believe that, they are safe. The Mysterious Person ensures it."
Silver Goddess: "Why would he do that? What does he gain?"
Board: "The Regulator is the only being in existence that the Mysterious Person cannot command. Cannot control. Cannot influence. They are his equal. Perhaps his superior. And he chose to protect them rather than destroy them."
Golden God: "That's... that's insane."
Board: "That is a choice. The Mysterious Person chose. As he always does."
The Golden God and Silver Goddess stood in silence, staring at the blank space at the top of the Judgement Board.
Silver Goddess: quietly, "What do we do now?"
Golden God: "Nothing. We do nothing. We cannot hunt the first position. We cannot touch someone tied to the Eternal Demon. We cannot risk speaking of forbidden things."
Silver Goddess: "So we just... let him be?"
Golden God: "We have no choice."
The Board pulsed one last time.
Board: "The blank remains. The first position waits. Hunters may come. They will fail. They always fail. Because you cannot hunt the one who chose to be nothing... and who protects the one who is everything."
Somewhere in the shadows, the Mysterious Person paused.
His black eyes flickered... just once.
The Ruler of Omnirank World Thee, standing nearby, turned.
Ruler Three: "You felt it?"
Mysterious Person: "The Board. They saw me."
Ruler Three: "You let them."
Mysterious Person: "I chose to."
Ruler Three: "Why now?"
The Mysterious Person was silent for a moment.
Mysterious Person: "Because they need to understand. The Court. The hunters. Everyone. They need to know that hunting me is hunting the first position. That behind me stands the Eternal Demon. That beyond both of us..." he paused, "...there is another."
Ruler Three: "The Regulator?"
Mysterious Person: "Do not speak that name. Not here. Not ever. To speak of them is to invite attention we cannot afford."
Ruler Three: "You still protect them?"
Mysterious Person: "I will always protect them. Until I die. And perhaps after."
Ruler Three: "Do they know?"
Mysterious Person: "They know nothing. They believe it is a myth. That is how it must remain."
Ruler Three: "And if they ever learn the truth?"
The Mysterious Person looked at his brother. Those black eyes. That expressionless face.
Mysterious Person: "Then everything changes."
He vanished.
That evening, as the light through the World Tree's walls turned to deep purple and gold, Ruo Kotaro sat alone.
Writing in his journal.
"He told us today. The eighth path exists.
No one knew. No one spoke of it.
But he walked it.
I asked him: Did the path choose you?
He said: No. I chose it.
The path does not choose its walkers.
Walkers choose their paths.
He spoke of loyalty and betrayal.
Loyalty to others is betrayal to oneself.
Betrayal to others is loyalty to oneself.
He is both. He carries both.
A war without end that he chose to fight.
In his world, only one percent has power.
Most awaken at seven. Some as late as fourteen.
He awakened at six... before normal.
Too early. Too different.
He chose to hide. He chose to be nothing.
He has worn that mask since he was six.
He told us about the stages.
Three levels. Fifteen stages.
Commoner, Knight, Baron/Count, Lord, Duke.
Monarch, King, Emperor, Conqueror, Sage.
Architect, The Void, The Absolute, The Origin/Monad,
The Silent Beyond.
He is Supreme Grandmaster. Peak Emperor.
Nearing Conqueror.
His Power anticipates his will.
His nature path is Loyalty.
His action was Betrayal.
In a world of one percent, he awakened at six.
He is the rarest of the rare.
And he chose to be nothing.
Fate does not command him.
Destiny does not guide him.
Nothing and no one interferes in his way.
He chose the eighth path.
He chose betrayal.
He chose the weight.
Now the Judgement Board shows a blank
where his name should be.
First position.
Above the King of Evil.
Above the Eternal Demon.
The Eternal Demon... Ruler of World Four...
owes him eternity.
They worked together, ages past.
Something came to stop the Demon.
Something forbidden to name.
We do not speak of it.
He convinced the Omniranker to assign ranks.
He gave the Demon World Four.
He ensured our orphan world was protected.
Because of the Regulator.
A position beyond rulers. Beyond everything.
only one in all existence.
Assassinated every time they are born.
By forces that do not even know why.
He knows where they are. He protects them.
No one else knows. Not even the Regulator themselves.
They think it is a myth.
He chose to protect his equal.
He chose not to command the only being he cannot command.
Choice. Always choice.
I choose him anyway.
Even with his betrayal.
Even with his secrets.
Even knowing he chose all of it.
Because choice is everything.
And he taught me that.
First position. Blank name. Eternal choice.
I will remember."
Ruo set down his brush. The chamber was quiet, the golden light of the world tree fading to deep purple. He felt... different. Lighter. Heavier. Both.
The night air was cool. The World Tree stretched above him, its massive branches disappearing into the darkness. Stars flickered between its leaves.
And there, standing on a branch wider than most roads, half-hidden in shadow, was the Mysterious Person.
He was watching Ruo.
Not moving. Not speaking. Just... watching.
Ruo opened his mouth to speak, but before he could, a voice came... soft, flat, empty, yet carrying weight:
"A throne stands empty in a kingless world,
A crown lies waiting, never worn.
I could have ruled, I could have reigned.
But I chose to be nothing instead."
He looked at Ruo for one long moment. Those black eyes. That expressionless face.
Then he stepped back into a deeper shadow and vanished.
Ruo stood alone beneath the World Tree, the words echoing in his mind.
He walked back inside, picked up his brush, and wrote one last entry:
"I saw him. Outside the tree. He was watching me.
He spoke these words:
'A throne stands empty in a kingless world,
A crown lies waiting, never worn. He could have ruled, he could have reigned,
But he chose to be nothing instead.'
I think I understand now.
He chose nothing so that we could choose something.
He refused the crown so that we could find our own.
The kingless world waits.
the throne remains empty.
But perhaps... perhaps it was never meant for him.
Perhaps it waits for us.
Tomorrow, we begin.
Tonight, we are.
And being is enough."
He closed the journal.
outside, the World Tree hummed.
And somewhere in the shadows, the Mysterious Person watched.
Choosing.
Always choosing.
The morning light filtered through the World Tree's walls... golden, ancient, but somehow differently today. Heavier. The roots that lined the corridors pulsed with a slower rhythm, as if the tree itself was holding its breath.
Ruo Kotaro felt it the moment he woke.
Something was coming.
But more than that... something had changed. Inside him. The Mysterious Person's words from last night echoed in his mind.
"A throne stands empty in a kingless world."
Kent Long sat up across the chamber, his eyes already open.
Kent: "You feel it too?"
Ruo: nodding, "The air... it's different. Tense. But also..." he struggled for words, "...like something is waiting."
They dressed quickly and made their way to the main training chamber. The roots along the path seemed to guide them, curling slightly in the direction they needed to go.
When they arrived, they found everyone already gathered.
The Old man sat on his usual root, his cloudy eyes more focused than Ruo had ever seen them.
The Ruler of Omnirank World Three stood against the far wall, his massive presence filling that corner of the chamber.
The Omniranker stood near the center, his ancient face unreadable.
And beside him stood a woman Ruo had never seen before.
She was pale... not the pale of fear, but the pale of someone who rarely saw sunlight. Her frame was thin, almost fragile, and she leaned slightly on the Omniranker's arm. But her eyes... her eyes were sharp. Intelligent. Watching.
Omniranker: gently, "You should be resting."
Omniranker's Wife: softly, "When does the world ever rest? Neither should I."
She looked at Ruo and Kent, and a small smile crossed her face.
Omniranker's Wife: "So these are the ones. the weakest and the strongest."
Ruo: "You are...?"
Omniranker: "My wife."
The words hung in the air.
Omniranker's Wife: "I have been inside this tree for longer than most kingdoms have existed. Illness keeps me here. But illness does not keep me ignorant. I know what you've chosen. I know what you've sacrificed. And I know that today, more will be revealed."
The doors opened again.
Two figures entered... young, barely older than Ruo and Kent themselves.
The first was a woman with hair like spun moonlight... silver-white that seemed to glow even in the dim light. Her eyes were the color of storm clouds, gray and deep. Her name is Selene.
The second woman was her opposite. Her hair fell in waves of warm amber, and her eyes sparkled with barely contained mischief. She seemed to bounce rather than walk. Her name was Mira.
Mira: grinning, "Look at this place! The roots are alive... really alive... and the light comes from inside the walls..."
Selene: softly, "Mira. Breathe."
Mira: taking a breath, "I'm breathing! But look..."
Selene: "I'm looking." She was. At her.
Kent: quietly, to Ruo, "They're connected."
Ruo: "yes."
Old Man: "Mira. Selene. Welcome."
Mira spun around. Selene inclined her head.
Mira: "Old man! It's been centuries?
Millennia?"
Old Man: almost smiling, "You always did lose track."
Selene: quietly, "You summoned us. Mysterious Person summoned us. What's happening?"
Before anyone could answer, the shadows deepened.
Everyone turned.
The Mysterious Person stepped out of darkness.
He walked directly to the Ruler of Omnirank World Three and placed a hand on his massive shoulder.
mysterious Person: "Big Brother."
Ruler Three: quietly, "Little brother."
Mira: whispering, "Did he just call the three-thousand-year-old ruler big brother?"
Selene: "He did."
Mysterious Person: "We are not brothers by blood. Blood is decided. Brothers you choose."
Ruler three: "Centuries ago, we fought. Not as enemies... as rivals. We found respect. Then recognition."
Mysterious Person: "We took an oath. Bound by this." He withdrew a crystal shard. "A fragment of the first light. We swore to stand together."
Ruler Three: Blood is given. Family is chosen."
Mira: quietly, to Selene, "So they chose each other."
Selene: "yes. It means forever."
Mira: "I choose you. Everyday."
Selene: "I choose you too."
Ruo watched them, then glanced at kent.
Ruo: "I choose you, Kent."
Kent: "I choose you too."
The Mysterious Person turned to face everyone.
Mysterious Person: "I have called you here because the time has come for truth."
He looked at Mira and Selene... the only ones who hadn't heard the full story.
Mysterious Person: "This world is an orphan. Torn from the second-ranked multiverse by a collision with the third. Ranked seventeenth. I came to reclaim it. My brother came to keep it. We fought. I won. I chose mercy over conquest."
Mira: "That's... a lot."
Selene: "And now?"
Mysterious Person: "Now we prepare."
Mysterious Person was thinking.
Why did he choose the ruler three as his brother.
But he got influence.
He was still thinking about his choices.
