Chapter 10 - The Lake of Healing

The Lake of Healing the second wonder of this world was hidden deep within the forest, its water glowing faintly silver under the moonlight.

The Mysterious Person emerged from shadow at its edge, still carrying Alya.

He knelt and lowered her into the water.

The moment the lake touched her wound, steam rose. The gash began to close...slowly, but surely.

Alya's eyes opened.

Alya: weak, "Where...?"

Mysterious Person: "The Lake of Healing. The Second Wonder."

Alya: "You brought me here again?"

Mysterious Person: "I could not let you die."

She looked at him. Those black eyes. That expressionless face.

But in the moonlight, by the silver water, he seemed...different. Softer. Almost human.

Alya: "You're always there. Always watching. Always saving me."

Mysterious Person: "I chose you. I will not lose you."

Alya: "Is that why you trained me?" For four years?"

Mysterious Person: "I trained you because you deserved to be strong. Because you survived when you should have died. Because..." he paused, "...because you reminded me of someone."

Alya: "Who?"

Mysterious Person: "Myself. Before I chose to be nothing."

Silence.

The lake rippled gently.

Alya: "You're not nothing."

Mysterious Person: "I am what I chose to be."

Alya: "You're my teacher. My protector. My..." she hesitated, "...my family."

The Mysterious Person looked at her.

For just a moment, just a fraction of a moment, his eyes seemed soften.

Mysterious Person: "I am sorry."

Alya: "For what?"

Mysterious Person: "For making you a target. For training you to be strong...and making you someone they want to hurt."

Alya: "You made me strong."

Mysterious Person: "Strength is not enough. I should have protected you better."

Alya: "You're protecting me now."

She looked at the lake, at her healing wound, at the figure beside her.

Alya: "That's enough."

The Mysterious Person was silent for a long moment. Then he spoke, his voice softer than she had ever heard it.

Mysterious Person: "Alya. There is something you should know. Something I have known since the day I found you."

Alya: "What?"

Mysterious Person: "You are not entirely human."

Alya's eyes widened.

Mysterious Person: "Your parents, before they died, they performed magic. A spell. It hides your true nature from everyone. From the world. From yourself."

Alya: "My true nature?"

Mysterious Person: "You are a beastman. A fox girl. Your lineage traces back to the ancient Kitsune clans."

Alya: staring, "A... fox?"

Mysterious Person: "Your parents hide it to protect you. The beastman clans are hunted in many worlds. They wanted you to be safe."

Alya: "Do you see me differently now?"

Mysterious Person: "I see you as I always have. As my student. As my family."

Alya: "Does anyone else know?"

Mysterious Person: "No. Only I know. And now you."

Alya: "Why are you telling me?"

Mysterious Person: "Because you are ready. Because your powers are growing. Because one day, the spell may fade. And when it does, you should know who you are."

Alya: quiet, "What does it mean? Being a fox girl?"

Mysterious Person: "It means you have access to paths others do not. Illusion. Charm. Transformation. In time, you may learn them."

Alya: "Will you teach me?"

Mysterious Person: "When you are ready."

Alya: "I'm ready now."

Mysterious Person: "No. Not yet. First, you must master what you have. Then..." he paused, "...then I will show you everything."

Alya smiled.

Alya: "You always have a plan."

Mysterious Person: "I always choose."

The Mysterious Person's eyes widened slightly, an idea forming.

Mysterious Person: "The Lake. Its water heals. Its properties are unique."

Alya: "What are you thinking?"

Mysterious Person: "Saint Serene. Her illness. if the Lake can heal wounds that resist normal healing..."

Alya: "It might heal her too?"

mysterious Person: "It might."

He stood.

Mysterious Person: "I will return shortly. Rest. Heal. The hunters will guard you."

Alya: "Where are you going?"

Mysterious Person: "To bring them here. Sage Veyron and Lady Lyra. If the Lake can heal her, they deserve to know."

hee vanished.

Within the hour, the Mysterious Person returned with Sage Veyron Gale and Saint Serene Lyra Gale.

Sage Veyron: his ancient eyes wide, "The Lake of Healing. I never thought I would see it."

Saint Serene: leaning on his arm, her voice weak, "You brought us here. For me?"

Mysterious Person: The Lake heals. It may heal you."

Saint Serene: "I have been ill for millennia. Nothing has worked."

Mysterious Person: "Nothing from this world. The Lake is beyond this world. Beyond normal rules."

He helped her to the water's edge.

Mysterious Person: "Try."

Saint Serene lowered herself into the lake.

For a moment, nothing.

Then...

Saint Serene: gasping, "I...I feel..."

Color returned to her pale cheeks. Her breathing deepened. Her eyes, always sharp, now blazed with renewed vitality.

Sage Veyron: "Lyra!"

Saint Serene: standing in the water, standing without support for the first time in millennia.

Saint Serene: "I'm... I'm healed."

She stepped out of the lake.Walked. Turned. Laughed, a sound so pure and joyful that it echoed across the forest.

Saint Serene: "I'm healed! After all this time, after centuries of stillness, I can move! I can run! I can..."

She ran. Actually ran. Through the forest, around the lake, her laughter filling the night.

Sage Veyron: tears streaming down his ancient face, ""Lyra... my Lyra..."

Saint Serene: returning, embracing him, "I never thought, I never dreamed..."

Sage Veyron: "Thank you. Thank you." He looked at the Mysterious Person, his voice breaking. "How can we repay you?"

Mysterious Person: "You don't need to. You are family."

Saint Serene: "Family?"

Mysterious Person: "I chose you. All of you."

Alya: from the water, smiling, "Same thing?"

Mysterious Person: looking at her, "Same thing."

Saint Serene: walking to him, actually walking, her steps firm and strong and placing a hand on his shoulder.

Saint Serene: "Then as a family, I thank you. And I promise, whatever comes, I will stand with you."

Mysterious Person: "That is enough."

Hours later, Alya emerged from the lake, fully healed.

Six female hunters knelt before her.

Alya: staring, "What...?"

Mysterious Person: "They are yours now. They will protect you. Train with you. Serve you."

Alya: "I don't want servants."

Mysterious Person: "Then consider them soldiers. Your soldiers."

Alya: "I'm fifteen."

Mysterious Person: "Age does not matter. Power does. You have power. Now you have followers."

Alya: "Did you... command them?"

Mysterious Person: "I did."

Alya: "Is that what you do? Command everyone?"

Mysterious Person: "Everyone who threatens you. Everyone who might hurt you. Everyone who can serve you."

Alya: "That's a lot of people."

Mysterious Person: "It is."

Alya: "Do you command me?"

The Mysterious Person looked at her.

Mysterious Person: "No. You chose me. I did not choose you."

Alya: "You said you chose me."

Mysterious Person: "I chose to train you. I chose to protect you. I did not command you. There is a difference."

Alya: "What's the difference?"

Mysterious Person: "Choice."

He turned to leave.

Alya: "Will you always protect me?"

Mysterious Person: "Always."

Alya: "Even when I'm strong enough to protect myself?"

The Mysterious Person paused.

Mysterious Person: "Especially then."

He vanished.

Alya stood by the lake, surrounded by her new soldiers, the silver water glowing behind her.

She smiled.

Back at the World Tree, the chamber was tense.

The young ones waited. The old ones stood in silence.

The Mysterious Person emerged from shadows.

Alone.

Ruo: "Alya?"

Mysterious Person: "Healing. At the Lake. She will recover."

Relief washed over the group.

But then...

Mysterious Person: "King Magnus."

His voice was flat. Empty. But it carried weight.

King Magnus: "I..."

Mysterious Person: "I assigned her safety to you. You accepted."

King Magnus: "The battle... I was distracted..."

Mysterious Person: "You were distracted."

The word cut like a blade.

Mysterious Person: "She is fifteen years old. She has trained for four years. She has never failed me. And today, because you were distracted, she nearly died."

King Magnus: "I'm sorry..."

Mysterious Person: "Sorry does not heal wounds. Sorry does not unmake blades. Sorry does not bring back what was almost lost."

He stepped closer.

Mysterious Person: "You are my brother. By choice. I chose you because I believed you would protect what I could not. Today, you proved me wrong."

King Magnus said nothing.

Mysterious Person: "Do not let it happen again."

He turned away.

The chamber was silent.

The roots parted again.

Two figures stepped through.

They were beautiful. Radiant. Their forms shimmered with golden light.

The False ones. The couple who had joined the Illimitable Court one year ago.

Male False one: smirking, "What a touching scene. The great Mysterious Person, concerned for a child."

Female False One: "We came to kill you. But this is so much better."

Ruo: stepping forward, "Who are you?"

Male False One: "New members of the Court. Young, by their standards. Ambitious, by anyone's."

Female False One: "We heard you were weak. Physically. That your stamina fails."

She glanced around. "Perhaps you've already exhausted yourself on those hunters."

Male False One: "Perfect timing."

They advanced.

The young ones moved to block them.

Kent: "You're not touching him."

Male False One: "We don't need to touch him. We just need to kill him."

Female False One: "And you?" You're children. Talented children, but children nonetheless."

Malakor: stepping forward, fire gathering in his palms, "I am no child."

Male False One: "You're a failure. A defeated ruler. A chained tyrant pretending to be free."

Malakor's eyes blazed.

Sage Cedric: "Enough."

Roots rose between the groups.

Sage Cedric: "You are in the World Tree. You are outnumbered. You are outmatched."

Female False One: laughing, "Outmatched? By whom? An old man, a fallen ruler, a few children, and a shadow who just exhausted himself killing three hunters? The weakest human in the omniverse?"

She raised her hand. Golden light gathered.

Saint Serene: stepping forward... walking without support, her eyes blazing with renewed power, "By me."

Her Star Path ignited, points of light filling the chamber.

Female False One: stunned, "You... you were ill... you couldn't stand..."

Saint Serene: smiling, "I was healed. By him. By the lake."

Female False One: "That's impossible..."

Saint Serene: "Nothing is impossible when he chooses."

Her eyes blazed with silver light.

Female False One: "What..."

Saint Serene: "I see your deaths."

The False Ones hesitated.

Then the Male False One spoke words that would echo in infamy.

Male False One: "Your precious Queen. Sage Peak. How wonderful."

Female False One: grinning cruelly, "When we conquer your world, we'll make sure she has a new profession."

Male False One: "A whore. Yes. A common street whore."

Female False One: "We'll strip her of that crown and put her on knees where she belongs."

Male False One: "Every man in the Court can have a turn. Every soldier. Every servant. We'll pass her around until she forgets she was ever a Queen."

Female False One: "And when we're done with her, we'll sell her to the lowest brothels in the lowest worlds. Let her earn us money and resources using that body of hers."

Male False One: "The Ruler of Light? She'll be the Ruler of Nothing. The Whore of the Omniverse."

Silence.

Absolute. Complete. Terrifying silence.

The temperature in the chamber dropped to absolute zero.

The golden light of the World Tree didn't just flicker, it died.

The air changed.

Not gradually. Not subtly.

It shattered.

The World Tree screamed. Its roots convulsed. Its walls cracked. The very foundation of reality seemed to bend.

Ruo fell to knees, not from weakness, but from pressure. Something immense was bearing down on everything.

Kent: gasping, "What... what is this..."

Mira: clutching Selene, "I can't breathe..."

Selene: "It's him... its has to be..."

Alya: looking toward the shadows, her fox instincts screaming danger, "He's angry. He's so angry I can feel it in my soul."

Finny: "This isn't anger. This is... this is..."

Malakor: his voice shaking, "Wrath. Pure, unfiltered wrath."

The sky was roaring.

The void between worlds screamed.

The whole omniverse screamed, as the monster was born.

But the omniverse didn't know who was that monster who creating the disaster.
